I just found your channel. I started my mechanic career at a Buick dealer in the eighties. Worked on a lot of Grand Nationals. Wanted to buy a brand new one from the dealer I worked at, but never got the opportunity. I miss those cars . Thanks for sharing and getting this car back up And running.

Very cool! I would have loved the opportunity to do that. I am 45 so these cars were everywhere when I was younger and happy that I was able to be part of the times when they were on the roads as daily drivers.

Nice Brian! Having done this on mine I can say the pedal was the most annoying and painful (MY BACK!!!) part of the process. Electric ratchet was a lifesaver. As for people asking about enough vacuum, I even have a bigger cam in my GN and it's fine. Powermaster is such a death trap, you can tell people how hard the brakes are when it goes, but most don't believe you. I experienced it once, and that was enough for me. The vacuum brakes went on, they work great.

I recently did this swap to my 1986 grand national and my brakes barely work. I tried bleeding the brakes multiple times. When I put the car in gear with my foot on the brakes I have to push the pedal down extremely hard for it to stop. Do you know what the issue could be? The brake booster and master cylinder brand new
@ClassicGBodyGarage

You need to change the pedal as well cuz the leverage point is different. It worked perfectly fine on mine and others who did the swap I know using the same process.

I’m adding a 383 stroker engine to my 86 Monte Carlo SS, replacing the Quadrajet carb, do most carbs have that vacuum line in back for brakes? Or will I have to fabricate something?
@ClassicGBodyGarage

I dont know too much about aftermarket carbs but if the large port is not in the base of the carb then just run the booster directly to a large vacuum port coming off the intake.

So why did GM put the complicated Power Master or Hydraboost systems on the turbo cars compared to the tried-and-true vacuum power brakes?
@ClassicGBodyGarage
@ClassicGBodyGarage 2 жыл бұрын
My only guess is that it may have been a safety requirement because vacuum is not sufficient enough for a vacuum booster to work at its fullest capability upon full throttle or when boost is up if a panic stop occurs.

I have an 82 Cutlass Supreme with hydro boost. I put a sbc 350 with the one belt pulley set. It’s really hard to steer on stand still. Wanting to switch to vacuum, would I just need the booster and master cylinder or would I also need a pedal?

@@ClassicGBodyGarage had an older mechanic tell me this... "I have never pulled a pan to do timing chain on a sbc. I was taught by a chevy dealership tech on how to do it back when I was 16, I am 51 now, we always trimmed the corners off the back side of the rubber gasket support, used 2 small phillips screw drivers to "pry" down on cover untill it slipped into place, ya it takes a little work but thats how we always did it."
@ClassicGBodyGarage
@ClassicGBodyGarage 2 жыл бұрын
@@tynandill926 Ok so he is right. Removing the cover is the easiest part but installing it very difficult because the U-Shaped rubber seal that goes on the bottom needs to be compressed for the cover to fit back on and the ends of the rubber seal need to be trimmed or it stops the cover from sliding into place. My trick is to trim the sides a little, remove the front half of the oil pan bolts which will allow the pan to flex a bit so you can fit the timing cove back on. You MUST use RTV then to reseal the pan gasket area as well as the corners where the rubber timing cover seal meets the oil pan which is the proper way to do it anyway. Hope this helps.
