The effect when all the variety in a roguelike doesn't work because everything FEELS the same is called the "one thousand bowls of oatmeal problem": they're _technically_ different but they work exactly the same in practice. You know what other game was a top-down grid, randomly generated, with turn based combat? Rogue. Not the Roguelikes, Rogue. Though in my case my experience was all with Nethack, not Rogue, but still pretty close. Yahtzee's correct, no one really cared about the actual layout of each level. They were random and uninteresting, except for the occasional secret door. What made each run different was the completely random crap you'd find, and the similarly random mix of monsters you'd run into. Toughness of the monsters varied by level, but it's not like you were always expecting a dragon on level 10. First indication there was a dragon on the level was usually stepping into its line of sight end getting hit with a breath weapon.

However with respect I'm surprised you didn't know how bad East Coast weather could be before you moved? Like again with respect didn't you read about all those stories of big East Coast cities like New York City getting their asses handed to them by flooding and snow storms and rain storms on a regular basis? (I'm half joking here.) Worst case scenario though (although for your sake obviously I hope it doesn't come to this) I bet your insurance company will repay you the costs of the damages. Like if people from Florida can get their houses destroyed by storms every few years and Uncle Sam and the private insurance companies keep paying out to help them rebuild on the exact same spots each time, I'm sure Uncle Sam and the insurance companies will help pay you to rebuild after a once in a lifetime storm. Also maybe you could buy a "tiny home" and park it on your yard and live in there while you rebuild.

Yahtzee, there are so many genre-breaking mods for classic Doom, that I'm not surprised that Jupiter Hell is a thing. There is literally a BOWLING GAME in Doom - Romero's Death Skittles. There's an idle game, the kind you find on mobile phones - Idle Doom. Jupiter Hell is just another step in Doom's attempt to take over all genres.

Calling the early levels in Jupiter Hell easy and boring feels very odd to me after I spent a few hours on them on the second highest difficulty setting. I believe it's ultraviolence, the one that gives enemies a flat 10% CTH bonus. Also him mentioning you just hide in cover until enemies are dead makes me think either he only played on easy, or he only played the one build that does that which I don't even think is possible on the default marine class. Additionally you often need to make builds based on what weapons drop early on if you want to survive the midgame, so his complaint about little randomization also seems just flatly wrong.

Over the last year or so, I've started to wonder if Yahtzee is even bothering with some games. Episodes have become blandly bitter in their shallow overviews, to the point that they feel like simple paint-by-the-numbers affairs created by someone who maybe spent ten minutes on a game, skimmed through someone else's Let's Play, or read a couple of forum posts about a game.

Idk I started playing on ultraviolence and I don't think he's particularly wrong. On my third attempt I got through the entire first moon overflowing with ammo and stimpacks then got bored and wondered off.

Furthermore, who cares if the level layout is randomized each run if it's never different in any meaningful way? And who cares if it's always different, but the layouts are never even close to as good as a single hand-crafted level designed with thought and intelligence and purpose? I'd rather play the same single GOOD map over and over again than pointlessly different bad randomized layouts over and over again. Procedural generation could be good in theory if it were advanced enough, but in actual practice, the cost in quality is always much higher than the benefit in variety, in my experience. With that said though, I'm only confident it's a bad bargain from the player perspective. I still suspect the actual selling point and reason developers choose procedural generation isn't the variety, but rather that it's easier to make a game's worth of procedurally generated maps than a game's worth of hand-made maps.
@SurprisinglyDeep

Another thing might be that having randomly generated maps in a game adds more replayability. Like there's probably many comouter gamers that want lots of value from their purchase, even if the game in question is only $20USD or less

I'm genuinely uncertain whether Yahtzee is aware of the fact that Jupiter Hell is literally a serial-numbers-filed-off full game version of the "Doom: the Roguelike" indie game, and probably counts as Doom's half-brother or something, or whether he isn't. Doom: the Roguelike isn't exactly world-famous, but I still expect Yahtzee would at least have heard of it, particularly if he actually picked up Jupiter Hell.
