I imagine people looked at the 40k universe and got fixated on the power armored superhuman poster boys or the world hopping Inquisitors/Rogue Traders, plus all of the aliens. Necromunda definitely has its charms and plenty of room for the occasional mutant monster, cultist, or ork, but most underhive gang wars involve humans with relatively conventional weapon shooting at each other. Definitely enough to carry a game, but it doesn't show off as much of the shiny things as often as it could.

I picked this game up on another review's recommendation, and for all its schizophrenic difficulty, a story that's missing all its establishing shots, and the absolutely _godawful_ animations, Yahtzee is right: the shooting part of this shooting game is really fun. I think I know how to improove those preanimated takedown animations (aka Glory Kills), or at least hopefully improove them for Yahtzee; Once you grabbed an enemy with one button, it unlocks a whole slew of different buttons to press whereas each one will make you do something specific to the enemy; for example, E to slam head on the floor, F to lift them above you, Right Click to smash them with the butt of your gun, and if you mix them up the glory kill will be even more coloful, and I'd essentially result in dozens of different unique takedowns depending on enemy type, buttons pressed, and speed with which each button was pressed. Unlikely that any game company would put that much effort into it, but let me dream

We could also point to the main issue WFB had at the end of its life; 8th ed had a huge model count (horde units of 40 minis each was favoured) which made the entry difficult due to the hobby being expensive (in some cases the plastic kits contained 10 minis for around 35€). Add to this the lack of support by GW at the time, and voila! AoS has a lower model count and due to GW changing its marketing style they have made Start Collecting sets that make the entry level easier, as well as the rules being simpler. Though AoS had a very rocky start. He hasn't been shy about how he feels about the setting though. He once called people who unironically liked it amorphous blobs. And to be fair the lore is as dumb as a bag of hammers, but in a very enjoyable way. I love it, but I'd probably be a bit worried of someone who ignored the fundamental humorous and satirical parts because without those most of what's left is a juvenile power fantasy with a heavy indulgence in fascist aestetics.
@alisonpurgatory853 жыл бұрын
@@havcola6983 except those humorous and satirical parts haven't really been present for a few editions and are totally absent from GW's marketing and official media by now, especially in the upcoming Warhammer+ animations, so 40k now IS a juvenille power fantasy with a heavy indulgence in fascist aesthetics. Hell, that's what Space Marine was. There was no critical or satirical element to Space Marine. I think that was part of the start of a downhill slope in the critical substance of 40k, when GW realized it was more profitable to pander to fascist power fantasies
@nikinikolov65703 жыл бұрын
@@havcola6983 If you call 40k "a power fantasy with authoritarian tendencies ", we can safely ignore what you have to say. Power fantasy in which everyone gets killed, mutates or goes insane and in the grand scale of things even the biggest characters are insignificant. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Hive world, yahtz, hive world. Every one of them is a planet sized cityfactory. They have no other terrain than skulls and guns. He's right about the skull carving profession in 40k though. Thats what you call job security.

Having played the Necromunda miniatures game back in the day, I can reveal that there are more career options on Necromunda than "gunfighter" and "whoever it is that carves skulls on everything". They include: -Frothing religious fanatic armed with a chainsaw, a flamethrower or some combination of the two -Questionable pseudo-Native American type who lives in the sewers and wears the skins of giant rats -Snooty rich psychopath who likes to dress up in extremely expensive hi-tech armour and compete with their friends to see who can kill the most plebs -Zombie

I know very little about the warhammer lore. but I do know there's a planet made entirely of blood where whatever you kill will come back after a certain amount of time... which also seems like a natural fit for an FPS game... so maybe they're saving that world for the sequel

I tried to watch someone stream Necromunda. They were somewhat new to the game, only playing for an hour or so. They were in a city and proceeded to spend at least the next 45 minutes in menus. I say at least because that was when I realized the white noise lulling me to sleep in my chair was someone talking and stopped trying to watch anyone play the game anymore.

re: skulls, i believe that all of the normal sized ones are actual skulls of actual dead people, not carved on for the sake of aesthetics. It's either to honour the dead with eternal service to humanity and the emperor, or punish the disobedient with.... eternal service to humanity and the emperor.

i've hung around warhammer stores and know this one thing to be true, the most amusing stories that happen typically aren't the ones that are written by the pros(since they are rarely allowed to indulge in a sense of humor) my original age of sigmar team was literally just a gryphhound walkers association(i.e. dog walker association) and a 40k team of renegade tau with friendly a.i. members(also dreaming up a harlequins troop that weren't there to just replay the suffering of their history)

From 3:45 on- welcome Yahtzee, to the dystopia that is the 40k universe. You have now experienced it properly- as it reaches through the interface you're glimpsing it through to infect you with misery. At least, I think that's how the 40k people will see it - just par for the course of 40k... ;)
@connorbutters84793 жыл бұрын
i agree with the murky visuals, combat can get really hectic so that plus the aforementioned visual can lead to me not seeing the dude shooting me until i've died and revived two to three times. i also find the takedowns difficult to understand because the devs thought it'd be a good idea to simulate real head movements in a takedown animation, it's like watching a phone shaky cam video of a street fight but the recorder is being held by one of the combatants. otherwise its a solid game.
