No greater river to be on than the mighty Lynher. ('Long river' in the Cornish language) Paddled every part of it that can be paddled. RIP Phil Buss who worked at Jupiter point for many, many years.

I remember doing doing swimmer of the watch jumping off the Ajax barge that was there during my training in 2000. It was the scariest thing i had ever done as a young naive 24 your old but once youre in its not so bad. Never had kayaks back then, we all went into groups of 3 and 4 and sailed the little 2/3 berth sailing boats round to Cawsand bay where we'd drop anchor and go ashore for a pint with an SBS rigid raider ferrying us all from and back to our boats, amazing experience in the height of summer too. Ended up serving 6 years in the mob on HM ships Guernsey, Ark royal and Illustrious. The best years of my life.

HMS Brecon my first sea draft back in 90 loved every minute onboard , we had an amazing crew from officers to ratings

Gosh that place has changed. I learnt to sail, whalers, cutters RNSA dinghy whilst at Fisgard.. We had our own Windfall yacht called Planet which was beautiful. Highlight of my time was the passage race from the Sound to Fowey and back. I suspect they wouldn't let 16year olds do that anymore. Got my coxswains certificate in 1955 and progressed onto Fireflies at HMS Caledonia.

an effective way to get recruits to learn the seas would be to stick em on a patrol craft (the smaller ones) and give a bit of hands on experience but ofcourse later in their training

We had Hurley's to sail , no wet suits just a life belt , the main object was to get the gunnels under water! HMS Caprice was parked up for us to go aboard for a look around the upper deck.

Looks like the old sail training yachts Hurleys 22's when I joined up and Fox Terrier 22's when I was was back at JP as ship's company in the 90's are all gone. Shame as that was an enjoyable part of the part 2 OM's training and the sea sense weekend they spent on them was almost always a welcome break from Raleigh for them.

How Jupiter point has changed in 40 ish year,in our days it was still someting from WW11, we went there in PT 2 seamanship, not PT1, and certainly never had all that. HMS Sailsbury was up the trot then. we only had whalers for our sea boats.

My crew during boat handling exercise scraped the paint off Ajax, Chief didn't notice nor did I. Good times.

Good to see they are getting experience with several different types of craft. Some of the facilities and equipment at Raleigh was looking a little run down though.

ASC? That’s a gaff rigged sailboat, right? Had many hours in them in the Southampton Sea Cadet Corps.

@@mikedevlin2048 🤷♂️, mid to late 60s was too long ago so I had to Google Gunter rigged and you are correct 👍. Anyway, had a few happy years on Southampton water and the Solent, Cowes etc.
