They don’t realize what they are doing as a good thing but feel guilty because they can’t hurt the bad guys like they would want to do. If they went back and say that they don’t murder than kill. Like how the heroes son took a life in self defense for his family and friends. It would be justified. When they say that they can’t kill that’s where put the heroes into a box and have problems like they do on the show.

Yup. It may be a mistake that the past storyline is executed far more skillfully. To the point that without it I wouldn't have made it through a single episode. But then it the twist happens and I'm like, 'wait, you can't turn a guy with self esteem problems into a family murdering psychopath without showing us why. Extreme claims require extreme evidence and we don't even see ANY evidence. Makes me not want to see the next season, to be honest.

@@sabcam2000 I mean I really didn’t care for George, so I was perfectly willing to accept him being a villain and not think about Walter’s actions, tho it helped that I binged all the episodes at once so I didn’t really have a chance to sit down and think about what was happening. It’s disappointing that Walter ended up as the big bad, given that “Gasp the Psychic was the evil one this whole time” is a really tired trope, but maybe that’s just because I’m so used to seeing it in poorly written stories that don’t want to put the effort into creating a more interesting villain than “I just want to control people so my powers match that with mind control”.

I feel like they haven’t set up Brandon’s betrayal well enough yet. He still seems like he’s trying to do the right thing. He resents his father a little bit but definitely not enough to turn around and kill him like in the comics

Yeah, I didn't trust Walter as soon as he read Brandon's mind. Because it's not like he mentioned what he knew, he just started up a chat like he was trying to get Brandon to talk about what was wrong. And I also didn't believe George was the bad guy. It would have been more believable if they just had him as a hero who didn't work within the Union. But to have him go to a supervillain, didn't ring true at all

The entire cast in the flashback always keeps insulting George when really, he does ALOT for Sheldon, even giving him a room with a fire place and study while he himself isn't really doing very well financially. Everyone always think of him as selfish when really, he's the only one trying to help Sheldon.

I knew from the first episode when we are introduced to the brothers that Walter was the big bad, Sheldon wears white all the time or light colours symbolising innocence and purity where are Walter wears black or dark colours...

Totally agree with you, I give it around a 7 too. I too think that if you have read the comics, you will be more interested in the show. I also agree that it should end with the death of Utopian and Lady Liberty like in the comics to make people hooked for S2. Overall I still dig it. Love how the actors who played Skyfox and Brainwave nailed their portrayal.

George was my favorite out of all of them. Even though u don’t see him a lot except in the flashbacks, I was very intrigued by his motives and the view that he had and often agreed with him. I have never read the comics but I thought the show was amazing. I give it 9/10 because of the great character development, a decent plot, and the amazing acting.

Just binged the entire season and the first thing I did other than going to the washroom 😅 is check if Heavy Spoiler had uploaded a video talking about the show and (not) to my suprise he did. Cheers mate! Keep up the great work. Also was it just me or the shifting aspect ratio between the current events and the past was really annoying. FYI I'm watching on a phone with a 20:9 aspect ratio screen and every time the show would shift from the older scene (16:9) to the current scene (21:9) my screen would not expand to fill the screen rather it would reduse I.e. an 21:9 scene inside the 16:9 aspect ratio. It's difficult to explain but can anyone relate?

I didn't know anything about the comic before watching the first season. But I was hooked from the very first moment. I just love super heroes pictured in a real world scenario and shown in a dark way. So even without any background, it felt very interesting and entertaining. What blows my mind even more is how close most characters are visually in the series compared to the comics. The actors of Sheldon, Walter and Chloe could be the original inspiration for the comics. Crazy.

I think you are absolutly right. A well made and a well put together comicbook adaptation. I always felt the book itself was just outlines for a slower series. And this is exactly what we got. I've read the comics before watching the show and notice the changes right away. If they hadn't cancelled the show for being too expensive to produce. I would have like to see how it all played out since part of the way they defeated Walter was to take the psychic powers from his daughter, but since they killed her off early, that ain't happening. I think if they had made a season two it would be Chloe getting pregnant and Walter really start to get the ball rolling on his coup of the world. Most likely end the season with Sheldon being murdered by Brandon and Chloe going on the run.

Man, I struggled to finish those 8 episodes. Your breakdown saved it a bit as I never even heard of the graphic novel. I figured this was a curse of having "Jupiter" in the title since Jupiter Ascending was hot trash. Although, they completely telegraphed the twist of Walter being behind it all from that very first scene with him and Brandon. I got Scar vibes from him right off the bat.

For those that haven't read its a watchable show that doesn't require all of the back explanations that some other Marvel shows require. I watched and ended up binging the entire series yesterday. I would bump it to an 8/10 at least. That said I hate that so many characters I would have liked to get to know better passed away so soon. Hopefully the series will do some back stories so we can see more of them and/or future seasons will be longer to accommodate more depth before whacking them.

The Sheldon\ Walter dynamic is very much the core of the series driving force, and I think the series does this justice, more so perhaps than in the graphic- you have to understand Walt's PoV. Series 1 is awesome, very happy with it, keeps the necessary core elements in tact.

I reckon there's more to it than that though though because there are a hell of a lot of people with powers to have all come from a skeleton crew on that boat. Those patterns will be explained though one way or another. Of that I'm certain.

I kept thinking they would explain it in the show and the only thing close to an explanation was the markings on the boat crew but it was never explicitly stated. I kept watching thinking that they were gonna show that the “island” gave the original six powers and that it leaked out to the rest of the world. I guess that is what happened sorta. But I’m also confused as to why the second generation is all in their twenties, did none of the union decide to have kids until the 90’s? Why dont they have 40/50 year old kids too? It’s all kinda confusing. But I dont know the source material at all so maybe it’s explained in the comic and those nuisances will be clearer in the second season.

I never heard of the novels/comics. However, I read the description and seemed worthy to check out the first episode. I had a lot of stuff I needed to do around the house today. Never got any of it done. I ended up binge watching Eps 1-5. I think it was well done, the makeup on the older people was not done so well. As well as, I think some of the character arcs are drawn out a bit. Nevertheless, I'm really enjoying this show and will finish off the last 3 episodes on Sat.

I watched the whole thing, never knew about the source material. I liked it. It was a slower burn, which was nice. At first I didn't care for the family drama, but then I got hooked when they started to bring in the past. I hope for season 2 because it was a nice change of pace.

Thanks for making this breakdown! I didn’t realize the show was based on a comic. Coming into the series I thought it was going to be another cheesy superhero show, but I thought Netflix did a really good job unfolding a new superhero origin story and bringing the classic superhero into the modern day.

Just finished this show and I loved it. This is my second best for 2021 and it comes after Invisible. I love how the Super heroes are relatable and if I was any one of them I would be George. Thanks @heavy spoilers. You do not disappoint.

It's already cancelled so there won't be a season 2. I watched the entire show in one sitting. The past origin story was far more interesting than today's ethical dilemma. In the show Brandon seems to agree with his father in the end, by not killing Blackstar and realizing that his actions inspired normal humans and fellow supers the wrong way. Utopian was completely broken in the end, ready to give in to his brother's machinations. I don't know if that means the show would go in a different direction, but I guess we'll never know. The ratings for the show were good, and it didn't look so expensive to me, it was more about the characters without too many expensive action sequences. I can't understand why Netflix decided to end it. The worst part is that after its cancellation, the franchise will be branded as a failure and it will take some time before another studio braves another take. Too bad.

I think the journey Sheldon went on was interesting, but I really wanted this to be better than it was. I'm afraid that ending the first volume where it did will cause the show to be thought of as a generic super hero drama. Giving us the utopians death would have ended on a higher note while leaving plenty of room for the many flashbacks we will be able to get in the future seasons. It wouldn't have been so crazy to have the aging process be a lot slower for the super powered people since they have been alive for over 100 years and saying that they age slower wouldn't be as bad as the aging makeup. Also why were the beings on jupiter so powerful and smart that they put that test on the island and could bring people from earth to another planet but couldn't stop the people on the boat from also getting powers?
