I was wondering if you’ll come back to this series, glad you did, and great recap. I think it’s obvious that Myrtle is also from the future….same actress and understanding Mary’s sirens. Not sure why the same actress playing Harriet is used in the future, unless there is a time loop or perhaps making sure audiences know it was the Nevers season finale we were watching. I think Massen and/or Bidlow could also be from future and freelife

This reveal really works. Molly did mention it’s not her face but confirming she’s from the future explains her advanced fighting skills, sexual liberation, foul mouth, and no problem with embracing Dr Horatio as a lover. Well done

so the first season is actually 10 episodes…we only got 6 because of the pandemic, instead of waiting longer to release the entire season they decided to release the episode they had ready, they are still filming and producing the final four episodes of season 1 and it is said we will get the last four episodes by later this year

In March 2021 they actually announced they had increased the number of episodes in the second half of season 1 to 6 episodes. And they have not yet filmed a single thing for the second half, as of interviews with Laura Donnelly released with episode 6's airing.

Originally The Nevers was expected to be a ten-episode season, however, the pandemic got in the way. The decision was made to extend The Nevers' first season to 12 episodes, but to split the series into two halves, six episodes each.

Per Nick Frost "The Nevers began shooting in October 2019, but was put on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Production picked up again about a month ago, Frost revealed, and they managed to wrap the 10-episode season. But Frost is unsure when the Whedon-directed series will be released. “I don’t know how HBO are gonna drop it. I think COVID might have split a big season of 10 into two of five, but that literally changes all the time, so I don’t know.” But despite the uncertain release date, Frost said The Nevers would be worth the wait"

I have to guess they've already got the last 6 episodes in the can. While TV and film production has slowed because of the CV restrictions, it hasn't stopped it. Several crews have the entire film crew in isolation while they're shooting. Others shoot around not being able to have more than 6 people on set by using green screen and lots of close ups. Others film in state's or country's that didn't do lockdowns.

I'm a bit suspicious of Lavinia Bidlow. She created a home for the touched which pulls them all together and wants to destroy the Galanthi. I could see her being the Freelife guy from the future. I'm also a bit worried that Hugo Swan is doing a lot to recruit touched, but he seems less likely.

I would like to stop for a second and just spend some time appreciating the actors and the high quality of acting they put forward, from the accents, to the action scenes and the exposition, i think the actresses outdid themselves, even a parallel can be drawn between Amalia True and Vanessa Ives from Penny dreadful, the pain and suffering that each of them go through is almost palpable and it leaves you thinking about them far after your have finished the episode. I think that many ppl may have missed the fact, that this was an almost female lead cast, casting strong, intelligent and able women who were still being condemned by a society of men for just being female in a victorian era. My hope for this series, is that barring the controversy of Joss Whedon, which sadly takes away from the hard work that everyone else put into this brilliant series, is that the actressess are acknowledged for the difficult and flamboyant roles they played (Maladie would make the perfect 19th century Joker mind you, and Amalia the perfect Batwomanesque heroin character) and the series acts as a springboard for them to be cast in other tv series, roles and movies, I think the actresses are very deserving of more appreciation and the all the sacrifices they made during this series (considering the extratraneous factors like the incredible action scenes and the added problems of the pandemic). Lets not allow the controversies to dampen the acting that brought these characters to life for out entertatinment.

the show just got better with each episode, really insane production values and some very amazing set pieces... amalia's jumping down a deep stairwell and using her red dress to slow her fall, that crazy 1v1 with the big guy on the water, all the fun powers, and the solid dialogue... i really think only ep1 felt weirdly paced, mainly cos it jumped straight into things and was a bit jarring to follow. the victorian costumes were extremely well-done and penance's steampunk gadgets somehow really fit in awesomely. amalia and maladie were very compelling characters, and most of the supporting cast were very interesting too. sad to hear it will take two whole years to continue, but i hope it will be worth the wait.

When you go to watch a tv show and it takes 20 minutes to realise its not the wrong show - i think that made up for the slower pacing like in earlier episodes. Really enjoyed it! Also needed that little extra 15 mins segment HBO gave us with interviews at the end. And realised just now I really needed a heavy spoiler review & explanation. So after watching you all through the pandemic I`ve finally subscribed! TBH I thought i already was subscribed as i watch you all the time through the marvel films & now tv shows, I`m in the UK too & thats some fast reaction turnaround time video. You must be knackered. In March HBO reported that season one was extended from 10 to 12 episodes and that it would be presented in 2 parts, six episodes each. So we’re still in season one. The twist was just following what used to be called in yesteryear the “mid season twist”

I don't understand why so many people and especially reviewers were annoyed by the build-up of questions in the first 5 episodes. The most common critique I have heard has been that the show creates more questions than answers (which luckily for those people and reviewers were answered to great extent in the 6th episode). Am I really one of the few people who are actually okay with being left wondering? I can't relate to this need to have the questions answered immediately. I see life as a mystery and i'm okay with not having all the answers and that's why I can easily accept that in a TV show. I've been greatly enjoying this show from the very first scene till this last episode. Anyways, as for who else might have ditched a ride from the future, I suspect Lavinia Bidlow instead of Dr. Hague (but he might be a time traveler too, in fact). She is the one who insists on killing the Galanthi which is reminiscent of the Free Life agenda.

It’s the world we live in. Everyone has to be able to “get it” quickly to feel apart of the masses, ie, discussions at work, posting comments about the show on social media etc. Once people scroll to see the comments, they then respond to the popular opinion and agreeing with it. This show would have been on top if it was produced in the era where science fiction translated and dominated broadcast TV, mainly the big 4. The Star Wars movies started all of the big franchises like X-men, Avengers, etc. With today’s technology superhero and in this case, science fiction, is better portrayed in movies. Most movies are less than 2 hours, and premium shows like this, are usually 1 hour. People still need to know EVERYTHING ASAP. HTGAWM was a phenomenal show, I loved it, many others did as well. The main complaints of the show was them showing murders first, and intermittently reminded and fast forwarding the time line at any given moment. It was brilliant. However people said it was hard to follow. The fact of the show implying “mystery” in the title by mentioning murder which we all know is the king pin of “whodunnit” people still needed to know immediately. It’s to the point where I can’t pay attention to any type of media when I’m watching a show I like, especially all of the off camera drama being aired about these shows. There are spoiler videos on KZbin that make money by telling the entire order of eliminations of game shows like RPDR before the season even airs. Those videos have the most hits. I haven’t watched a finale in years including the international versions for that reason. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I love the mystery. I will say I love this show but the beginning of this episode threw me off. I was really looking forward to the immediate aftermath of last weeks. It did throw me off and I had to pause to see if it was my HBO Max app yet again glitching like it has done since I started episode 1 last week. I had to quickly skim online to see that I wasn’t crazy. So I pressed on. I’m so glad that I did. It was wonderful as usual. As for the other Galanthe. Zephyr said there were 3, and 2 died. She didn’t even know she was “dead” in somebody else’s body at first, so the other 2 could be alive. That Italian woman they keep showing has to be the 2nd. She was in the light of the bubble when they showed the crack. So now it makes sense for her to be there. I’m thinking Maladie is the third. She says friends keep secrets. Lavinia is probably the Free faction. That one stripe guy turned on them quick and Lavinia has been turning on them this entire time. Zephyr killed him when he thought he had overpowered her. Amalia called out Lucy and was going to do the same rightfully had it not been for Penance. Lavinia is about to get the same treatment only worse now that they have all reunited. She said a battle is coming, and it definitely is.

I didn't find the episodes hit or miss, I thoroughly enjoyed them all. This last episode opened a whole new world and I like the hard science fiction twist. Hopefully they don't screw it up in future episodes, having a first-time show runner take over may not be the best move. It's a shame Joss didn't stay to see it through.

I thought this was the mid-season finale -- the first season was supposed to have 12 episodes and this is the halfway mark. Not sure if the other episodes are in production yet or not. But... waiting until 2023 for many of the dangling plot threads, for the unclear direction to take shape is... well, that's a lot to ask of an audience. I hope it does get a chance to have a full season at some point, hopefully sooner than 2023.

10:36 - why does no one get what the airship is? It’s what Penance had stashed in the back of her wagon to get away in after rescuing Maladie. She tells the driver not to pull the lever to open the back and release it, but the lever drops on its own after they all run away. You can see the blue fabric as the hatch opens.

“Stripe” appears to be a kind of soldier. It’s not that character’s name. Names are sacred in the future, at least to the Planetary Defense Coalition, which is why the Stripe didn’t tell her two ex-husbands her name and was unwilling to reveal it in the episode until the very end, when she told Penance her true name, Zephyr Alexis Navine.

The Future Folk use job titles as names. Stripe, as in a soldier’s rank insignia. Knitter the medic, as in mending. Bynar, from binary, the computer/tech guy, and the two Boots, either from the slang for new recruit, or from foot soldier.

I have a wild theory that it’s Penance that is the other person sent back. And she’s the one building those robot creatures. (I was a bit confused about whether Knitter and the woman that can change anything into glass were the same actress/character or not). Really enjoyed this show. Shame that it won’t get the promotion it deserves due to Whedon’s problems, but I’m glad that we are getting another 6 episodes at least as I was really worried it was about to end at ep 6.

I'm really enjoying this and can't wait for the last 4 episodes. I think it's being unfairly reviewed by a lot of critics purely cause of the whole Joss Whedon fiasco. I keep reading that it has too much going on and doesn't know what it wants to be as a show, I don't agree at all. There is a lot going on here and it's peppered with moments that make you go "ooooooh right!" when you get to episode six, why is that a bad thing? A lot of dots connect and you get a real sense of where the show is heading. I swear people nowadays just want everything straight away and can't appreciate a bit of world building, like, give it some time ffs.

Nevers is great. The behind in scenes stuff went away for after watching the first show. It does need more episodes for the future seasons, 8 to 10 would fit the show. And the acting was really good. I would give it a 8.5 out of 10. Good Start.

It's only the first half of the season. They had to stop production because of COVID so it altered the plans for the show. It actually expanded from 10 to 12 episodes.

I think the reason why the spores gave mutant powers to the Victorian era Touched, is because the Galanthi portal technology was not in "temporal-sync" with that era. And that's because the captured Galanthi could not "sync" the tech before hand. It was trapped in that glass cage. The Galanthi was only able to activate the portal technology quickly enough to escape (and take Zeffa with her). Yes I believe that Galanthi is a female. Remember that Zeffa (the future Amalie, from the past - OMG "mind f#@%") mentioned something about "sims" and being out of "temporal sync" - as in simulations and mental/physical synchronization. These "sims" are probably used for training or understanding the Galanthi. And these simulations need to be in some type of "temporal sync." But since the portal tech was activated to quickly escape, the spores that the Galanthi spaceship released caused different effects on the Victorian era folks. Most likely because their Victorian minds and reality were totally different from that of the future humans (from Zeffa's time). So rather than being only empathetically bound to the Galanthi, they are instead mutated with powers and an empathy they can't fully understand yet. And since Zeffa was dead (or close to death), she had no idea what happened, or any idea of a mission. She basically only had limited memories of the totality of the events that happened during the Galanthi "time portal" escape.

I read that it was called “The Nevers” because those that were Touched do things and have abilities that people “never” had or should have.

The first commenter is correct. The title does lead you to believe that the “Nevers” are a faction they use to describe themselves and more importantly the rest of the world does as well. Them being the “Touched” would have been a great title but also to obvious and the director isn’t going for too obvious which is great. The fact of this being the case in most stories in tv and movies nowadays makes it more plausible. I read the same explanation and the idea was brilliant. In society today, terms used to differentiate or identify a group can be an extremely touchy subject, despite people only verbally avoiding the term all the while displaying the very same behavior in any way shape or form, just enough as to not get “caught” discriminating. Lavinia like most rich people only do charity to put themselves above everybody, get recognition, and most importantly keeping those needing the charity from ever getting to close or rise up so they won’t need the charity. There can never be a rich without the poor, and we know it’s extremely possible for the poor to exist without the rich, any third world country or impoverished US State is living proof of that. Mississippi and Alabama border 2 of the largest states by area, population, and wealth yet they are the poorest. West Virginia and Delaware border the MD, VA and DC areas and yet they are still impoverished having not even close to what there neighbors have. QE reigns over 18 realms, as a monarch supposedly not having power when we know it’s BS, and look at Jamaica, which won its independence from her in 1962, and yet still she reigns and it’s an island heavily impoverished changing very little since she took the reigns back in the 1950s. Tourism is the only thing keeping it afloat and that’s barely especially now with this pandemic. We go to these remote areas and do documentaries and see in some places everybody is poor, give a little bit of money, then comeback to sell the footage for fame and profit. Yes some are legit but we know others aren’t.

Names were sacred and left unspoken. Stripe had 2 husbands who never knew her name. The character of Knitter was going to speak her name at the moment of her death. Amalia reveals her year 2121 name to Penance much later. A "stripe" is a low-ranking soldier.

I had to pause 15 minutes into the show to make sure we were watching The Nevers. For me it was an unexpected origin story for Amalia and you are right, this episode was head-and-shoulders above the rest. I felt like, okay, now we're cooking with gas and now the show can begin! I absolutely love this show. I can't wait for it to return. I love the different angles and complexity of the storyline. The jump to the future was a complete twist that was wonderfully done and did help to explain what's going on, all while further complicating the story in the best way. Perhaps what I'm waiting on more than anything is to see what happens with Penance and Amalia. There is definitely chemistry there, there's definitely more than friendship there and I totally SHIP these two HARD!!! :D Super excited for season 1B.

In the future, Galanthi spores do *not* seem to have made anybody noticeably advanced, superpowered, knowledgable, or anything strikingly different. We meet a “Spore” who was touched by those lights but seems pretty darn normal, and she hasn’t been assigned to work with the Galanthi or their tech even though you might think that someone enhanced to do that would be using those skills. Then, in 1896, Amalia/Stripe is shocked by the special powers the Touched get, because nothing like that happens when she’s from.

I think 'Stripe' was not her name, but rather a title. Kind of like calling someone: 'Medic'. There seemed to be some taboo about knowing someone's true name, so everyone called each other by their title.

For some reason seeing Myrtle all glam and done up like the space-aristocratic narrator to the prologue of Dune or something (and speaking intelligibly) kind of took my breath away for a moment or two as I realized who it was. I'm not convinced it necessarily means anything yet but something about it was really striking.

The Nevers, like most of Joss Whedon's series, was amazing. I loved it ~ and so did everyone I know who watched it. I don’t understand why HBO cancelled it. And yes, episode 6 blew my mind!

Great review of a great episode. I think Stripe was more of a rank than a name. There's something going on with the names as they made a point that names were sacred and not to be revealed. I guess Stripe's / Amelia's accent was Canadian as she said she was from southwest Canada unless boundaries have shifted in the future.

Yeah the name Stripe I think was a nod that she was a higher rank person. Could be that she is a grunt as well, but definitely a soldier ranking.

I feel like I need to rewatch this episode a few times because there was so much going on and I feel like I missed a lot because I was too busy thinking I was watching some other show lol. I also think it's worth going back and watching from the start now that we know more about the Galanthi and who Amalia really is. Also, I'm wondering whether 'Lavinia' might have been brought back from the future as well and is actually a Freelifer which is why she wants to destroy the Galanthi? But then it doesn't really make sense why she's supporting the Touched 🤷‍♂️ Aaaaaaaaaaalso, I feel really bad for Sarah/Maladie after seeing how she got screwed over by Amalia

Agreed. my HBO max app has been glitchy lately and it took 20 minutes for it to finally work. I naturally was angry thinking it played the wrong show. I was going to quit watching and wait for ever how long it took to come off hiatus just to continue. I had to come here and thankfully find out I wasn’t alone lol. I can make an argument about Lavinia helping the touched all the while plotting against them. You keep your friends close and your enemies even closer. She knows Amalia so far is the only one who was close to remembering and knowing how she got there. It was only a matter of time. She also knew that there were other touched that banded together and she wasn’t somehow in the loop, she was going down losing the big war. Masson said he and Lavinia are alike despite quarreling. Masson is no better than Hugo when it comes to extortion and his sex club, neither is Lavinia. Masson wanted the public hanging to create chaos. Lavinia only showed the rich the touched so it would backfire and make them look bad. Masson told the Beggar King to do just enough damage so the public can see there is a war about to be started. True and the touched are the underground PDC and Masson and his posse and obviously Lavinia in secret, are the Free Army. You have to force a civil war between your own people just to keep the “empire” the same including going to war with other empires to make sure it happens.? Lavinia and Masson divided the group into 2 teams with 2 opposing agendas and it worked for this battle, but it won’t be that easy next time and they all know it. This is why I sometimes side with my fellow Americans concerning the UK and the history of it all. They have no room to judge anybody just like we don’t. They conveniently forget about that Church of England coop started by those Tudors which clearly is still affecting the country and religion centuries later. This “war” began in 1896, barely 30 years after our Civil War, but at the same time of our “aftermath and reconstruction “ period which began another war minus battle at first (we see today the killings are even more frequent on our soil) than back then. Only this time the war is being fought by classes and money is the weapon. All of that negative talking about the US and it’s forgotten our ally entry into both WW alongside the UK won both times. Providing aid to a group in need wether defensive or monetary is always the perfect cover for your actual malicious agenda. The people that lead and or are members of these groups are held in the highest respect and regard and never suspected to be malicious when we all know it’s ancient history that clearly shows it happens far too much not to be noticed. Almost 200 years later and people are just now starting to call out the BS, some of it is genuine and some is for self gain. But it’s a start. This explains why Lavinia has more than one prejudice against Penance being with Augustus. She “pretends” not to know Augustus is touched and what does she do, she uses her snobbish society and overbearing attitude to guilt him into not dating her. Penance is Irish. We all know the still ongoing battle between Britain and Ireland. Lavinia hates her for that too. That one soldier in the future said she was born and raised Free Army but left secretly joining the PDC. That Free Army commander they had captured manipulated that soldier to come back to the Free Army and he turned on them and shot the stripe, and Zephyr rightfully killed him without hesitation. Lavinia’s false charity is doing that on a larger scale. It’s a good thing they have false identities and don’t use names. We know the Irish that left Britain and started Ireland are viewed as committing treason to this day and we all know the UK and all of its wars were solely based on treason “the excuse to kill deserters”.

@@FieryFlamingFajitas Yes basically. Masson Drew the line between the British Empire and the Touched starting a civil war. The way he walked in to that factory lording over for them to end their valid strike proved it. He even said that he just let them only “lick” the carrot and next time he will use the “stick”. He was publicly denouncing the Beggar King but quickly ran to him to get him to help start the war with no traces back to him. That’s why the BK let him talk his arrogant condescending BS giving it right back until he finally admitted he came to get him to do his dirty work. The BK even said he knew it and “now we are talking” basics saying all the BS was unnecessary. Many in that 5 billion that were killed descended directly from the Victorian Era and or adopted the same ideals ultimately contributing to their own demise. UK is no different than us if we’re being honest. They have to be in control as well, they entered every nation defining race and war we did with the same objectives. We both adopted democracy yet both use a small group of people to disguise whose actually in charge and doing all the dirt. They use the crown and we use the rich.

The thing about Hague is, he is really good at the mad sciencing. He creates androids way beyond today’s tech much less Victorian abilities, and seem oddly confident that he can analyze Touch-ed-ness by looking at brains. My guess is, he is Touched too, with his inherent brain surgeries boosted to magical levels. Obviously being America is a real handicap in Victorian London or...l ok, I don’t know how he qualifies as downtrodden. Maybe his body also died (voluntarily or not) and also left an empty vessel for a future personality like Mrs. True.

the flash to the dystopian future is a call back to Joss's other show Dollhouse, whose finale did something similar. The kickass short petite woman is of course a Joss trademark as seen in Buffy, Firefly and Dollhouse. Penance is another Joss tradition of having the sidekick be an awkward earnest nerdy information/tech support best friend, again in Buffy and Dollhouse. Did not guess that Stripe was True until 5 mins in, where I guessed Stripe was True who aged over hundred years for fighting since the events of the previous episode and eventually dying, before being proven wrong in that it was Stripe's soul travelling back in time instead into Molly's body.

I love this show. Didn't start watching till episode 4 but caught them being reshown. I've watched 6 about 4 times and everytime I watch it again I understand things better. Can't wait till the second half airs.
