@@DrArchivist Nedry underbid for the job, and Hammond was simply a tightwad who went with the lowest bidder. Hammond actually was an even bigger jerk in the book, because he didn't tell Nedry the full scope of the project, and continued piling more and more work on that was outside the scope of what he was originally hired to do, and was essentially doing the job of an entire IT staff by himself because Hammond refused to spend money (he only "spared no expense" on the customer-facing amenities, not any of the technology required to actually run the Park, which is one of its major flaws). Nedry had VERY legitimate grievances that were largely excised from the film because they decided to make Hammond more sympathetic.

6:00 - You should have seen that first dinosaur on a theater screen, it was REALLY impressive back in 1993! It still looks great today, but seeing it on a big screen was amazing. The cast and crew really were scared of the T-Rex. They built a full-sized animatronic one for the closeups where it interacted with the actors. It was covered in foam-latex skin, which soaked up the water and made it even heavier and harder to control. Considering that it weighed 12 tons and was prone to shaking and unexpected jerkiness, they really didn't like being near it. Even when it was working properly, it could hurt people if they accidentally got in its way. Also, it's said that the roof of the car wasn't supposed to get pushed in like that, so when it happened, the screams of terror from the kids were real. Now that you've seen the entire movie, do you still want to go there for a vacation? :)
@joost1120
@joost1120 2 жыл бұрын
The part about the car roof isn't true though. It was supposed to break through. This is a misconception coming from a quote of one of the kids, but it's misinterpreted. The T-Rex hit the plexiglass too hard and broke one of it's teeth. It was always supposed to break the glass. Just look at the scenes directly before it. T-Rex looked at the kids through that glass, followed by another scene of the kids trying to turn off the flashlights. It was set up to break through, otherwise it would've just bumped the roof. That wouldn't really be a good scene, especially not with the buildup.

One of the most legendary movies ever made. The special effects in this film still rivals anything made today, and despite a few flaws, still holds up. I also wouldn't call it a family film exactly, since it was rated PG-13. 15:51: Nedry shut off the security system for two reasons: the first is to disable both the access to the cryo chamber where the different dinosaur DNAs are kept and the surveillance cameras that guard it. The second is to shut off the automatic system that powers the gates, so that the gates he goes through leads to the docks without him having to stop where his contact is waiting for him at the dock. When Nedry said he had an 18 minute window, that means he only has 18 minutes to steal the embryos and make it to the docks while the system is down and before the 3 men find out what he's doing. To answer your question about if he cares about the dinosaurs running around that'll eventually kill people, you know that answer because his reason was for money. The scene where he was having lunch with the contact in glasses, he said this: " Don't get cheap on me, Dodgeson. That was Hammond's mistake".
@brianrecinos3914
@brianrecinos3914 2 жыл бұрын
It is because the raptor pen was not along the route that Nedry had to take on the way to the docks. The raptor pen has its own separate area, presumably away from the path intended for tourists. There are two scenes that confirms this. The first was back in the control room, when the power for the gates began shutting down. Muldoon said "The raptor fences aren't out, are they?" Samuel L. Jackson: "No, they're still operating ". Hammond: " Why the hell would he turn the other ones off?" The second was during Muldoon and Ellie's walk towards the power shed after Hammond ordered a complete system shutdown to erase Nedry's damage on their system. When they got near the raptors' pen, Muldoon said " The system shutdown must've turned off all the fences. Jesus, even Nedry knew better than to mess with the raptor fence".

Jurassic Park was shot largely on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, so it’s visitable, just without the dinosaurs. The CG is actually pretty sparingly used compared to modern movies, there are about 50 shots that have computer generated effects (for reference, the first Lord of the Rings has over 500). A lot of the dinos are actually puppets or animatronics, like the sick Triceratops and the full sized T. Rex. The only CG shots of the Rex are the ones where it is walking or running… or eating the lawyer.

Everything about that scene is so well constructed. My favorite bit of it is when the T-Rex eats Gennaro. It was full screen and highly visible without cutting away, and a seamless interaction between the practical and computer generated elements. Everyone wondered just how far this big PG-13 Spielberg movie would go with showing the violence, following his extremely kid-friendly "Hook" and overall toning down after "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." The audience practically cheered at the sneak preview showing I attended. This movie was just about the first time audiences started to really care about the advances in theater sound quality.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but the species that can change sex are only ones that reproduce through external insemination. They release clouds of gametes into the water. Thus it's much simpler for them to change sex because all they have to change is the type of gamete they release; no internal anatomical changes need occur. So it's not really going to work with dinosaurs.

The story behind Nedry is interesting. Basically, Nedry and Hammon have a clash in agreement in regards to pay. Nedry believes he should be paid more than he currently gets, mostly because he is having financial issues. Hammond refuses, because he believes he is paying him fairly, and doesn't think he should be responsible for Nedry's financial problems. Nedry is frustrated by this, and agrees to steal dinosaur embryos from the park for a rival corporation in exchange for a huge sum of money. To do this, he needs to digitally deactivate the locks and electric fences and escape the park with the embryos. He is also the only one who can restore the status of the locks. Unfortunately, this also creates problems for everyone else, as the lack of electric current allows the dinosaurs to escape their enclosures. Nedry's dilema is the entire reason this movie exists.

It's impossible for people to wrap their head around how we felt, when seeing this in the theater/cinema back in 1993. CG was very rarely used(I would say, less than 10 movies in 15 years), and audiences didn't know what CG was. I thought it was elaborate claymation/stop motion animation. The trailer, prior to the movie release, never showed any CG footage, because it was still being worked on, up until a few weeks before the summer movie release. It was maybe two years before I saw a behind the scenes, and learned how it was done. Still my favorite BTS to watch once in a while.

Definitely a horror movie. I was a wee little kid when it came out, and we went to see it in theaters. The moment that goat leg crashed onto the car roof? My first jump scare, and I have never lived down being a jumper ever since. It was particularly hilarious because I had a box of candies in hand at the time, and when I jumped, the box stayed in my hand, but the candies sailed waaaaay across the theater! My mother loves talking about how I was so into dinosaurs at the time, so, when my grandmother gave me a toy horse, I said all the polite thank you's and promptly put the horse at the bottom of my dinosaur-riddled box of toys. But after seeing this movie, I apparently went, dug the horse up from the bottom, and hugged it to me because it wasn't something that wanted to eat me.

I graduated (from a small private school) the year this came out.... After our last day, a group of my classmates and I all went to see this movie and sat in the very front row... In the scene where they finally get the power turned back on, I *totally* saw the jump scare coming and was determined to not get startled.... But what I didn't see coming was the fact that, because we were in the front row, we were all leaned way back in our seats with our legs straight out in front of us and being taller than the girl sitting next to me, her leg was underneath mine... and she, apparently, did NOT see the jump scare coming. She screamed, jumped and kicked the back of my leg.... I expected the jumpscare and scream, but I did not expect a kick so I jumped and screamed...and nobody expected a jump and a scream so long after the dinosaur appeared and the chain reaction continued well after what was on screen was no longer scary, so suddenly we were all laughing realizing that everyone else in the theater had no idea why we were all still jumping and screaming! 🤣

I can't deal with the Daystar burning down at me all day lol Also, foreshadowing in the movie: When Dr. Grant ties the two female ends of his seatbelt together in the chopper to 'make it work', he definitely 'found a way', just like the female dinosaurs did :P The T-rex animatronic head they used in that first scene where they're stopped at the fence wasn't supposed to bust through the top of the car, but it did accidentally and terrified the kids, which ended up being a much better scene so they kept it in :P T-rex's also don't roar like that. Large mammals roar. Reptiles *vibrate* . The real T-rex 'roar' would have been a very low frequency rumble that you would FEEL more than you would hear, and ultimately is probably more terrifying. It's also been disproven that T-rex vision was based on movement :P

My favorite underlying theme in this movie that I didnt catch until someone else pointed it out, was John Hammond's constant catch phrase of "Spared no expense!". Insisting that he bought nothing but the best, but he was cutting corners in all of the crucial areas. An island full of wild animals, and hes got a skeleton crew of 1 ranger, 1 programmer, and 1 operations guy? Nedry was bitching about money, and was susceptible to being bribed, so he was either just a scumbag, or he was just a regular guy who wasnt being paid well. I like to imagine that Nedry joined up because he liked the idea of what John was trying to do, and then was overworked and grew to resent him. Not trying to defend Nedry, just saying I can see how someone would get to the point he did. Still, what he did basically amounts to murder. Everyone loves a good "fuck this, I'm out" revenge quitting a job story, but you dont set the building on fire with the crew locked inside. And you shouldnt set the building on fire at all!

Also you would surprised how much of those were practical effects. For example hatching of the eggs or Tricerapots that was sick and attack of Tironosaurus on car with kids was also animatronic not cgi and lots of those smaller dinosaur's were also practical ones and even some Brachosaurus (one huge ones that were mostly cgi) but several scenes when you see their legs stomping were animatronix. All he had to do was ensure the majority of the protagonists survived, limit the amount of graphic gore, and include a rousing, triumphant score at key points in the film to maintain a certain degree of optimism. But it still has all the elements of horror. 🤷‍♀️

Prior to CGI, Integrating dinosaurs with live action meant animatronics, guys in costumes, reptiles in make up, or stop motion animation models. Some stop motion animators were so artistically talented, comparing CGI to their stop motion is like comparing a photograph to a painting. My personal favorite stop animation effects artist is Ray Harryhausen. His dinosaur work includes: "One Million Years B.C. The dinosaur sounds in this movie were made by combining sounds made by living animals and every day objects. The Tyrannosaurus rex (known by fans as Rexy) was a mix of elephant calf vocalizations (roar, snarls and growls), lion sounds and a dog playing with a rope toy (shaking the Gallimimus to death). The Dilophosaurus was a mix of hawk, swan, howler monkey and rattlesnake sounds. The adult Raptors were a mix of a walrus's chest cavity roar and a male dolphin's mating scream recorded with a hydrophone, while the hatchling was a mix of owlet and fox kit sounds. The Brachiosaurus vocalizations were slowed down donkey calls, while the sneeze was a mix of an active fire hydrant and a whale breathing through its blowhole(s). The Gallimimus's chief sound effect was made using the recorded calls of a mare (female horse) in heat. And yes, that Raptor popping up right behind Ellie is always a major jumpscare...especially for me with my autism and anxiety.

26:15 "Come on, guys. It's not a race." "It kind of is, because she's going to turn the power back on." True, but he _stumbles_ who runs _fast,_ Dasha.

6:16: Ms. Dasha, here's a fun fact. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex is a Latin one, meaning Tyrant Lizard King.

Parts of this movie was filmed in Kauai Hawaii. I’ve been to the exact location and it is beautiful. When they fly in on the helicopter.

I've read the book before the movie, I convince my grama to go watch this movie when it hit the big screen. My grama convinces my aunties and their kids to go watch it in the theaters. I'm happy to see the same reactions from you. I'm very grateful and love your reaction to this movie. makes me happy too.

The guy trying to smuggle Dinosaur DNA thought he had time to go the dock and then back to his computer station but he didn't count on the high storm causing him problems.

He had no intention of returning. He was going to *leave* on the ship - ostensibly because of the storm.

I'm so sorry you were looking for an easy, relaxing family movie, but instead you got an intense, horror film. I wish I could have warned you. The little dinosaurs were soo cute though.

In the UK this movie was rated PG (Parental Guidance) with a special warning. It has dinosaurs, but is certainly not a children's movie. The original book is significantly scarier. In English it is called Tyrannosaurus Rex. It sounds very much the same, just different because of the accent and where the stress is places. 12:45 Yes, he's flirting with her, but he is also explaining chaos theory, He has been married a number of times, but never for very long. 14:16 The book goes into more detail and explains why the Triceratops is sick, but it's not very visually interesting, so they don't bother in the movie. 17:36 No, T. Rex has tiny arms and hands for its size, not much larger than a human's. The head and feet are huge.

I wouldnt exactly call it a 'kids movie', it was rated PG13 afterall. Teens and up would be more accurate.

But everyone saw it in like 10 years old 🙂 To be honest, some TV fairytales scared me more than movies like JP or Alien.

This movie makes me laugh as an adult. As a child, I definitely did not leave the room to use the bathroom after the Tyrannosaurus Rex got loose, and anyone who says I did is a filthy liar. Who may be telling the truth.

Loved the reaction, Dasha! I'm continuously pleasantly surprised at how fast you are, managing to put together the little clues about what is happening or about to happen. You are one *very* smart gal, Dasha! It's not your fault that somebody mis-cued you about what kind of movie this was. And if someone could manage to pull this off (without the short-comings or the problems) a Jurassic Park *would* be a *very* cool place to visit!
