Pro-tip: add a little led light in the amber stand to make it look even cooler in the dark.

you can actually get amber colored leds, so adding an led, a resistor, a battery charger and protection circuit and a switch would be a nice touch.

People thinking it was a "stolen idea" need to realise firstly Peter Brown wasn't the first person to make a replica of this ( the film is over 20 years old) and also that it clearly takes a while to shoot and edit these videos meaning this was probably done if not before Peter Brown made his video then at least before he posted it. TL;DR Peter Brown didn't invent this method of making this and Vinny didn't "steal" this idea.

Yes Peter Brown recently did the same project as this guy but that shouldn't invite people to slam him for 'copying' peter, I think we should be supporting anybody who wants to explore a creative outlet. Peter Brown's was great and this guy's is great too, I give them both mad props ;D

Kanra-tan but he copied him to make cash off views. They profit from doing what he did 10 days ago. It's obvious they saw it and figured they could make a video on it and not give credit. It'd be different if he did a shoutout to peter and the guy who made the actual cane shaft (his name escapes ATM)

Its very possible Prop Shop made this video because they saw Peter's, but you can't base a claim that 'Prop Shop copied him for cash and views.' Besides, they didn't even use the same methods, this video features mold making, and Peter's featured carving the resin on a lathe, that part definitely can't be considered copying. Yes, its possible they are trying to copy Peter, but I don't think its fair to jump all over them the way so many commenters are, I'd rather try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

We shot this video just over a month ago, and just as a heads up - it actually takes much longer than 10 days for us to pick an idea, plan it out, get the right materials, do any pre filming experiments, shoot it, and then edit. The coincidence here is crazy, and when I saw his video drop last week, I immediately thought "This is beautiful. Also, everyone is going to think we copped his idea". But it truly wasn't the case.

This is a direct reply from Vinny on the matter of copying Peter Brown's idea that I thought Id share here so more people could see it! Timing can always be an issue when people have very similar videos release right around each other! Reply from Vinny Logozio: Given that Peter's video came out last week, I know it seems like we might've copied the idea - but we actually filmed this just over a month ago, and had no contact with Peter (although I do subscribe, and I'm a big fan of his work) regarding the idea, method, or script. The idea to make this came from thinking of what to make and talking with my Dad about what would be cool. Like I say in the video - it's been something I've wanted to make for a long time. If you watch Peter's video - he molds a nice big brick of the resin, and then machines it down into the shape. The method I'm using here is closer to what others have done do make an amber egg, by silicon molding around a final egg shape. But most projects I've seen have used 2 part molds to get it done. I haven't seen one yet that was a 1 part mold, so hey I thought it would be cool to bring to the channel.

Just saying, these are obviously 2 very different method of making them. Peter cast the bug in a rectangle piece of resin and later refine it down to an egg. Vinny is straight away cast the orb in an egg shaped mold. Peter's is more experienced and the end product is clearer and neat. Vinny's is more like first timer and the result is rather messy and it carried the messiness of what a real ember would have. Both channel accept request from their viewers and fans. it isn't so surprised when two channels come out with the same project at the same time and obviously for all those who yelled "Thieffffff!!!" must have visited both channel and might be the one who suggested the same project to both channel anyway.. The movie came out in 1993. There are already thousands of "mosquito in ember" replica being made way before Peter did, He definitely not the first nor the one who "invented" how to make one. Stop being a mindless 12 yrs old fanboys ok?

Why is everyone hating on this vid. They did a great job of re-creating the prop. Also Peter Brown used a lathe, a tool many people don't have, and can't afford. This was and easier option, and I'm pretty sure they didn't copy him. Also that's like commenting on Peter Brows video and saying "You stole this from Jurassic Park."

From building model and dealing with clear parts, toothpaste works well (paste not gel) once clean and dry, dip the part in future floor wax and let dry. This gives a great clear part and shine, Future is an Acrylic and drys hard and added bonus it's readily available and cheap.

Hey given that Peter's video came out last week, I know it seems like we might've copied the idea - but we actually filmed this just over a month ago, and had no contact with Peter (although I do subscribe, and I'm a big fan of his work) regarding the idea, method, or script. The idea to make this came from thinking of what to make and talking with my Dad about what would be cool. Like I say in the video - it's been something I've wanted to make for a long time. If you watch Peter's video - he molds a nice big brick of the resin, and then machines it down into the shape. The method I'm using here is closer to what others have done do make an amber egg, by silicon molding around a final egg shape. But most projects I've seen have used 2 part molds to get it done. I haven't seen one yet that was a 1 part mold, so hey I thought it would be cool to bring to the channel. It takes us much, much longer than a week to plan, film, and edit an episode - and I would absolutely give credit to those that inspire builds, every time. Peter's build was gorgeous, and we did ours without knowing he was doing one as well.

Elder Eggplant silicone molding and resin is the universal way to make this kind of props. pros do that in films. Adam Savage showed that on Tested several time

Edit: They didn't take anything from him (yay, they're not the bad guys). They just shoot stuff in bulk and this just came out at an unlucky time. If you really need proof; vinny his instagram (in their description) has a pic of 7 weeks ago whilst he was pouring the mold (thanks to Sylveon17 for pointing this out to me as well since I didn't know this and I bet many others don't either). You can pretty much ignore my original comment at this point. Just sucks this happened at the worst time for them. Original: As much as it was done slightly differently here (single mold instead of using a lathe to round off a square molded piece of resin) it looks (not saying it is like that, but it does look) a lot like there were some notes taken from Peter Brown on this one. I am assuming there was some research done on how to do this before you did it was done on the channel so I (and most likely many others) will assume you guys took notes from him. Maybe just give him some credits or a shoutout in one way or another. I am not saying you guys stole the idea or even the methods from him (even if you did, it'd be scummy but wouldn't make it his right alone to make a vid showing this), but this the techniques used to get this effect are awfully similar to what he did. You might want to point out like "hey we took notes from this guy" or "hey someone else also did it in a similar way go check that out". I can't imagine it being pure coincidence since if you would look up how to do this he is pretty much the only thing that'll pop up on either youtube or google (until you guys did this vid) so either you guys found it and are being a bit scummy on this one, or there should be a better research theme. Overall I tend to quite like this series. The props aren't always accurate which is a bit of a nitpick from me, but they are great as inspiration for people wanting to make stuff themselves at a low cost, so to see stuff like this which was either lack of research (I hope) or straight up scummy is makes me a little sad.

Damn Vinny! I`ve been watching DIY Prop Shop since the beginnig and I noticed NOW that you`re left handed. I love every episode of this show, you really give us good tips, which helped me many times in making stuff. Since Guardians of the galaxy is pretty close, i would LOVE to see something related to it, like Yondu`s yaka arrow, Star Lord`s helmet, or blasters, or maybe Rocket`s gun that he uses in the movie. You know.. Instead of trying to squeeze the egg/resin out of the mold, you could always just cut the mold right to the egg in a zig-zag pattern, and then just fit it back together with clamps. That way you can just peel it apart without ruining your mold. You wouldn't have to worry about trying to force something large through a small hole.

I've seen a couple of videos on making this prop, and i have to say that this is something that will actually benefit from slight variations and mistakes since the resin is meant to mimic amber. one guy i watched had the amber perfectly clear, perfectly uniform, with no blemishes or bubbles whatsoever, so it immediately looks fake. Amber has all kinds of junk caught in it, and obviously you don't want stuff blocking the bug and making it look like a mess, but a few bubbles, some cracks or inconsistent color would actually really improve the piece.

I went over to watch Peter Brown's video to see what all the fuss was about and the only similarity is that they both made a mold and used resin w/ amber dye. Yes, they both used real bugs, but Peter goes into depth about trying so hard to find his. FWIW, this is DIY Prop Shop--Do-It-Yourself. Peter Brown's method is hardly DIY friendly and it took him 18 months to complete (by his own admission).

I'm glad Vinny presented this in a way that is accessible to beginners. Unfortunately, doing it this way will have KZbinrs calling him a "cheap Peter Brown". Hey, it takes us much, much longer than a week to make build and edit a video. I appreciate the concern, as I don't like copycats either - but we filmed this over a month ago, with no connection to Peter's build. If I knowingly used something of his, I would've given a shout out (and that goes for all builders). The timing was just unfortunate. But hey, I hope you can learn a new technique from each video.

The big thing is Peter's channel only has about 410,000 subscribers and the video in question has about 315,000 views at the moment. With AWE they have 5 million subscribers and this video will probably get near a million views. In the KZbin world that is some income disparity ... the classy thing to do would be to link Peter's content and Pocket83 since they collaborated on this idea first. They spent nearly two years on this and could benefit from the View, Share and like Monetization traffic

All the Peter Brown comments are BS. No, he took 18 months, said you had to catch your own bugs, and showed a method using 100x more effort and cost using milling machines and carbide tools. Not exactly doing it first and not really a DYI without a shop.

I did this a few years ago for a science project. I didnt use resin though, I used a thing called "fake water" that I you use on model train sets. Heat it with a heat gun, add your colouring and voila. Ready to pour amber. I used a leaf instead of a bug though. Science teacher was really impressed as it was the first (and only) piece of homework I did ;)

To help getting something like this out of the mold, use a can of compressed air with the straw attached. Push the straw into the mold and give a few gentle bursts of air, the pressure should push the cast out of the mold.

First off, Hammond's cane was a white bamboo cane. Something rather easy to get ahold of without the topper. Secondly, if you want an easy way to get air bubbles out of the resin, when you're leaving it to set take a box fan, face it straight up and between two chairs or even 2x4s to keep it off the floor and use a small board in the center of it to put what you're curing on it as you let it go. It's a cheap way to have a workable vibration table that's been used in resin and plaster casting...

Helpful tip, to avoid bubbles you can poke a hole in the bottom of your mixing receptacle, and let it drain trough the hole into your mold.

The two original mosquito eggs were a process of 7 layers of polyester resin vacuumed between each layer. They were Burmese Mosquitos with the wings from bees and the stingers were pins painted black with a sharpie. I still have the very first sample cane prototype for spielbergs approval.I know because I made them!
