I remember seeing Jurassic Park, the movie, and begging my mom to buy me the book because I wanted to read it (I was in 5th grade at the time). I must have read my copy until it fell to pieces. Now, thanks to Jurassic Park, I work in a Clinical Lab...so I'm fairly certain this book literally changed the course of my life. Also, I was THAT GIRL who loved dinosaurs.

Same age, same scenario. I read my book until it fell apart. At least 5 times. I saw the movie in the theater 7 times. I never got into biology, but I did go into product design and development. This book helped make me who I am. Side note: I wrote him a letter in 7th grade and he wrote back! It was so amazing! He was a real treasure.

I didn't find Lex as annoying as i probably would have years ago. Just being around children tells you that her continuous whining are the norm and not the exception, especially given the circumstances and her inability to really comprehend the level of danger they were in. I did enjoy her constant wanting to play catch as a coping mechanism for her newly divorced parents. It not only lent some sympathy her way for me but it allowed Gennaro to appear fatherly and empathetic.

When Jurassic Park hit the theaters, I was HOOKED. At 12 years old, I watched it a few times in the theater. And while waiting (not so patiently) for the videotape (ha) to hit the shelves, I discovered the book. This was my first book aside from things I purchased from a Scholastic book fair. From there, I explored more Crichton, then on to a world of wider reading. But this was the start point for me. And as such, it will always hold a special place in my heart and on my shelf. Thanks for this video and the Crichton reread, Mike!!!

Malcolm's monologues towards the end of the book are so interesting I was not expecting that. His thoughts about science being penetrative on purpose as a way to leave a legacy is a powerful idea that had never occurred to me.

My favorite book! And I always tell people when recommending books give it a chance because sometimes those that don’t know assume it’s a children’s book. And I always say it’s more of a bio horror. Lol The first chapters of the book and all the sequences of events that happen when the dinosaurs begin to escape is horrifying.

Awesome intro!!! Might be your best one yet. This is the book that introduced me to Crichton. I remember devouring it during my study period my sophomore year in high school. No homework was done during that period until i finished that book! I had read Arthur Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger series and I loved The Lost World, so I was excited about this.

Excellent review! I love Jurassic Park. It was one of my favorite childhood movies. I don’t know how many times I played the VHS of the movie growing up. Jurassic Park is one of my favorite franchises, and just recently, finally, after watching the movies so many times, I decided it was time to read the book. I don’t know why I never started reading it, but the book is great so far! I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s a page-turner, even though I already know what happens. I agree, the book is much darker and has a lot more elements of mystery. I just bought The Lost World book, and I can’t wait to read it and compare it to the movie.

So check this out. Mike, you’re the reason I decided to get into Crichton, which holy smokes I can’t thank you enough. I read Prey a couple months ago and literally just finished Jurassic Park last night. Then I get on KZbin and type in “Jurassic Park discussion” because I wanna analyze what I read, only to see that you just uploaded this review two days ago. That’s a coincidence worthy of study by Dr. Malcolm. Seriously, what are the odds lol

Jurassic Park is my favorite Micheal Crichton book so far, I've only read 5 so far but he is already my favorite author! Talking about Jurassic Park gives me goosebumps, its so good! Anyone who hasn't read it yet should definitely do so! I'm someone who loves both the film and the book, maybe the book a bit more because I feel like the anticipation keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat feeling didn't really translate as well in the movie, but that's not to say that the movie wasn't great!

And I generally couldn't give a shit about dinosaurs but I loved the film and hoped I would love the book. And I did! It might even be a Top 10 Book of the year for me. Awesome video. I thoroughly enjoyed. I love those editions that you have. I have been fascinated with Crichton since reading The Andromeda Strain a year ago. I bought a paperback a year ago and just got to this one, but am plowing through it so quickly, and agree with your comment about the thrill ride. (Though, I have to admit that the kids are pretty damn annoying in the novel.). I agree that the novel is very brutal compared to tamed down film adaptation. Anyhow, your thoughts and commentary are spot on and I'm enjoying reading Chichton and looking forward to more reads from him. I will probably be reading Sphere in the future. (And I love the Rush T shirt too).
