Crichton is my favorite author. He has been since i was ten. He was uncompromising in his methodology, impeccable in his form. His writing, even the dry science, was always comprehensible. And the core of the books, the spirit behind them, was always important. Appreciation for the natural world, respect for the power that scientific discovery gives us, the flawed perspectives of man. Man, Michael Crichton was the first author to get a "favorite writer" moniker from me. I was in high school at the late 90s/early 00s and was devouring the sci-fi sections in my local libraries when I stumbled upon either "Andromeda Strain" or "Sphere" - whichever one was first it impressed me so much I promptly went through his whole available body of work, even though at the time the only books i was interested in were science fiction novels - I read The Great Train Robbery, Disclosure, everything, and loved every single one, with the possible exception of Eaters of the dead/13th warrior. Looking at the complete list of his books I noticed that Disclosure was the last one of his I read... well. I have some accrued credits in Audible, guess who's about to get herself some nostalgia, possibly followed by some never before read books... Thanks for reminding me about an author I used to love and sadly, forgot about.

Eventually, I came across this book with a t-rex skeleton on the cover by this guy I never heard of... flipped the book over, read the synopsis, and said sold. I devoured that book in a day. Obviously, the book was Jurassic Park. I have since read almost everything of his including the books he wrote under the name John Lange. I am so grateful to have experienced Jurassic Park before it became famous. When I found out about his passing away I got chocked up because I also didn't realize that he was fighting cancer. It felt like losing a friend even though I never knew him in person. Great author and a great video. Thanks!

I wanna go back to Crichton’ s thoughts/excerpts of his thoughts about extinction there 33:44 especially for THE guy who wrote the definitive sci-fi book on dinosaurs. Their extinction was most certainly an environmental event that was not of their making as a species. It’s humans that keep flouting the natural order of things and being the exception to the rule that breaks things as humankind thinking itself to be exceptional rather than seeking harmony with the natural world and itself. In fact, I would argue that as much as the earth will “survive” humans, what does that even mean? Survive as a planet orbiting the sun but no longer hospitable to life or able to support life like the atmosphere that was depleted on Mars? I’m sure Crichton expounds. His observation however on not having knowledge and on not thinking is all too prescient.

Hey Mike. Just found your channel and I'm really looking forward to diving into your videos. I read Jurassic Park and enjoyed it, but after finishing it I resumed my strictly fantasy tbr. I've added several of these recommendations to my tbr now. By the way, do you have a how to get into scifi video (or a why you should read [insert favorite scifi series here])? I'm looking to branch out from fantasy a bit.

Hey, welcome in. Not really just a couple of sci-fi reviews. The Expanse, Red Rising. But I should be doing Dune content this fall.

Murder bots seem to be quick, easy and highly and enjoyable books. On my TBR too. With the Cixin Liu trilogy.

Look at that, wasn’t expecting to hear about Horizon Zero Dawn in one of your videos. Love that game, have finished it like 7 times and Forbidden West I’ve finished like 5 times

my first novel was Jurassic Park, I started reading around they introduce DNA and cloning dinosaur.. and it happens I'm interested at science.. i was 13 back in 2001.. since then I read most of Crichton's novel except the non fiction ones.. he was truly talented and creative man. not to mention his directorial career in the 70's. EDIT: surprised you skipped "The Lost World"

Recently read TIMELINE. I was skeptical going in, and I didn’t understand a lot of the physics explanations. I’d be interested in a longer discussion about this one. I thought it was great.

I think Jurassic Park is nearly A perfect book. he first gives you small hints of what you kind of think is going on. Then he takes your thoughts and makes it reality then he takes your reality and his rules he set and puts them on its head, and you can't let go. I just love his writing style so much it's so different then a lot of the books I've read. Also, I Love ER sad he couldn't write more books before he died fantastic Author and one of my favorites of all time.

Mike, I came to this video late so I am not sure if you are still checking the comments. I paused the video when you mentioned Tom Clancy and asked for folks to post in the comments if you should read Clancy. So far your taste in books closely mirrors my own, though we both know that is not a guarantee that you will enjoy Clancy because I do. I do suggest that at some point you give Clancy a try. I would start with The Hunt for Red October. Avoid the audiobook, which I first picked up on cassette many years ago. It reminded me of David Lynch's version of Dune in that it is so chopped up up if you don't know the whole story going in you would still be lost at the end. I loved the movie, but again it is only a shadow of the whole story. If you like the book, try the rest of the Jack Ryan series. I'm was never a fan of his other series, but your mileage may vary. Enjoy

Great video. It definitely made me want to read Crichton. Have you read Matthew Reilly? There are some similarities I think. not as good as Crichton though, but had to give a shout out to an Aussie author.

First I have heard of him.

So I love sci-fi, whether it be Star Wars, Star Trek, Ender's Game, Timeline, and many more, I enjoy the stories and the technologies represented in them. Please give Micro a read because it is worth it. I will say there are parts that you can tell weren't plot ideas from Crichton but they only slightly diminish the over all story. What I mainly love about Crichton's techo-thrillers is the technologies and how they are explained and explored enough for the story. My Crichton list would have to be favorite to least favorite: Timeline, Prey, Jurassic Park, Micro, Andromeda Strain, Sphere, State of Fear, Lost World, Congo, Terminal Man, Next.

Well I guess I've got a few books to add to my TBR list. I've read a few of his books over the years, but never really thought too hard about who wrote them, so this has been an eye opener. I had no idea that he had such a string of hits. It's a shame we lost this guy, I wonder what he'd be writing today?

Not sure, but it would probably be about something that happens 10-15 years from now.

I liked Congo because of the 30 seconds of Bruce Campbell 😂 You're right on with Airframe, that book made me mad. The twist at the end wasn't a twist, she knew it all along. He could of removed the nonsense with the union and it wouldn't change the book.

Read Jurassic Park and was hooked. Im the biggest JP fan. I could go on about Mr.Crichton forever, but you pretty much addressed everything. Have you read Preston and Child? They had a movie out called The Relic. It is a first story on an Agent Pendergast series. Im on the 3rd book which are set on a gothic natural history museum backdrop. Also a series known as the Gideon Crew series they are 5 book techno adventure series. A defiant recommendation of book.
