I remember how hateful Hammond was in the novel and how surprised by that I was after being used to the much kinder film version. Richard Attenborough (R.I.P.) had such a kind and lovable personality you just can't see him as the hateful dirtbag Hammond was in the novel. I think a wise decision was made to make the film version a much kinder character and thus have him live, learning from his mistakes.

Given the fact that John Hammond was a colossal asshole throughout the entirety of the novel, I was surprised that Steven Spielberg decided to let him live at the end of the movie

Hammond’s World was very depressing.

Good thing Hammond in the film _wasn’t_ a colossal *A-Hole* like he was in the novel; when I first read it, _that_ surprised me for sure.
