"Hey, the last film ended with a whole bunch of dinosaurs being released into the world and possibly causing the downfall of civilization." "Yeah, we should really do some Planet of the Apes style film where humanity and dinosaurs clash in an epic fight." Enter Colin Trevero "I have a far better idea. We put all the dinosaurs into a closed off sanctuary. Meanwhile the evil company is working on a bio weapon." "Like some super dinosaur or something?" "Much better: Locusts."

Steven Spielberg, even in Jurassic Park, knew how to use Special Effects. I suspect that he learned early in his career during the issues with Jaws that atmosphere and the human element of the film will go much further than just throwing effects on the screen. The original Jurassic Park, even with its ground breaking CGI, was judicious in how it used the effects; several scenes pique the audience's interest by hinting at the dinosaurs (the barely seen Raptor in the shipping crate that begins the film, hinting at Raptors in their cage during feeding, traveling through the park w/o actually seeing dinosaurs, hinting at the arrival of the T-Rex and Raptors more than once before we see them, and then using practical effects BEFORE the CGI and very carefully lighting and shooting those practical effects to hide the wires and seems) so that when the CGI is finally seen in all its slightly cartoonish glory, the audience has built it up in their own minds that they're ready and willing to be overwhelmed by the visuals, the while the cast and atmosphere are still carrying the film. The Jurassic World films, under Colin Trevorrow, just throw the imagery on the screen without that buildup. And also without as much care for how it's presented; my curmudgeonly old-man heart was warmed to see a LOT of animatronic dinosaurs, but they were obviously animatronics. I would accept that in a fun park, but in a film where they're supposed to be "real" they stuck out like a sore thumb. I was happy to see the original Big Three actors back, and pleasantly surprised that they all (spoilers) didn't get eaten. And when the film tried to drop nostalgic hints and callbacks, it **mostly** succeeded in having them be noticeable but not obvious and grinding the film to a hault. So points there. The opening reminds me so much of that 1969 campy classic, The Valley of Gwangi, and I often wished I was watching that film instead. The Jurassic World films keep hinting at an online fan theory that the "dinosaur cloning" is really a lie; instead of being creations of fossilized DNA which was repaired with frog/lizard DNA (which is impossible btw, the only way to "repair" DNA fragments is to know what is missing in the first place) they are created whole cloth. For Raptors, they didn't "use monitor lizard DNA" they started with monitor lizard DNA. We expect Dinosaurs to look a certain way from a century and a half (at least) of them being presented as big lizards with scaly skin, so they create them to look that way, despite more recent evidence to the contrary (but I'm getting off track). The first Jurassic World created the Indominous Rex, a Frankenstein creation of various kinds of DNA. The Super Locusts of this film are in the same vein. If this is the end of the line, I'd have personally liked the films to just admit it before they left. Then again, I personally wouldn't be opposed to seeing the franchise (very heavily) course correct with a more Spielbergian entry that again puts more emphasis on atmosphere and the human element again. And for anyone who says "why can't you just sit back and enjoy the dinosaurs?" I can. I consider 1997's The Lost World to be a near perfect "check your brain at the door" movie for such things.

I feel the makers of the Jurassic World trilogy don't really care for Dinosaurs. In the first film they focus on a hybrid monster, in the second it's another hybrid monster and a cloned little girl and now it's a cloned little girl and locusts. Dinosaurs are just things that happen to be in the background for a bit of action when needed.

The 3 original characters were written to as smart and strong characters. This movie really dumbed them down. I was very irritated with Ellie satlers dialogues. The pilot really had really no business being this involved with own and Maisie. The plane crash did not even put a scratch on them. Owen was perfectly fine after falling into the icy water. The dino screaming above the water with Claire below felt odd. The dino just walked away? The locust plot was really unnecessary. Nobody on the planets seems to care that meat eating dinosaur are roaming freely around the planet. PEOPLE GET SCARED TO WALK OUT IF EVEN A LION WAS ROAMING FREELY IN THE CITY. It seems big humongous dinosaur are not as threatening like a lion. SMH The stevejobs villian was stupid. The entire movie was a really long copied shots from movies like mission impossible,James bond, fast and furious and the Croods .

I watched this movie in theatres and it was okay, towards the end though there were a lot of cheap thrills/setpieces (lots of jumpscares) that I hated and yes the characters should've been dead at least 10 times over. But it was fun and the final act was pretty good. Loved Wanda DeWise's character as well!

Locusts? Really? All the set up in the last movie about humans and dinosaurs being forced to live amongst each other, and they settled for fucking locusts? Really? What happened to this series? No seriously, this has got to be the most pointless series of sequels since the Star Wars sequel trilogy. They could have never happened and nothing would have changed. Also, what was the point of comparing the Giganotosaurus to the Joker?

Honestly, making a Jurassic Park movie that focuses on mutated locusts would be like making a Predator movie that focused on X-Men-style mutants. As much as I’d love to see something like X-Men Vs. Predator, that’s not why I’d watch a Predator movie! Though speaking of Predator (as well as legacy franchises getting sequels/prequels this year), the new Predator movie, Dan Trachtenberg’s PREY, actually looks really good, and I hope that at least turns out well.

stand by your rating of the film(s). over the years I've noticed a trend of certain loud audiences to decry critics to own them, even if the merits of the films in question are low. They'll cite blockbuster popcorn fun and such, and that may be good enough for them. You're looking deeper, in the how and why something is crafted, not just the tingles it may make. The they vs them thing pops up in a lot of things, but if you've given you're honest review and the people who know and trust you trust those reviews, don't go changing.

Bad movies have been around as long as the medium exists: there have always been films, that are incompetent, boring, derivative - but for all their flaws, you could still feel a human heart beating somewhere in there. But modern bad movies often just feel soulless. It's like they were made by a machine, an algorithm.

You know, if there was ever any attempt to make any kind of soft reboot for this franchise (not saying you should remake Jurassic Park, because, well, why would you), three things should probably happen for it to work: 1. Don’t make it about more than it needs to be. The original Jurassic Park is a movie that combines many things, but also knew exactly what it was. It was a movie full of action, thrills, awe, spectacle, as well as moral questions about what was happening with the park. But it knew that there were people who’d want to watch it mostly for the dinosaur stuff, so it knew when to make the movie about that (and to make those scenes work incredibly well) and when to present its more adult themes in a way everyone could understand. The World trilogy focuses too much on themes no one cares about with this franchise and only has dinosaur stuff as filler. As Todd in the Shadows once said, it’s like the franchise has shied away from the first movie’s strengths and leaned in on its weaknesses. So if another attempt is made in the future, they need to understand what made that first movie work so well and play on that rather than things like mutant locusts, human cloning, and all that other nonsense. 2. Create developed-enough characters we can relate to, and most importantly care about. Part of why everyone remembers the characters in the original, especially the three leads, is that they were played to stand out, be memorable, and even relatable to some extent. You can watch characters like Grant, Sattler, and Malcolm and relate to both their awe at the spectacle of the park as well as their stances on the morality and logistics of it. Even Hammond was relatable to an extent in that he was an older man living every kid’s dream of bringing dinosaurs to life and wanting the world to see them and be as amazed by them as he was (even if the movie plays out the consequences of him doing it). I don’t see anyone really relating to or caring at all about the characters in the World trilogy, and that’s something that should be fixed going forward. 3. Maybe any new liberties or new directions should make sense. For instance, I wouldn’t mind seeing something more akin to Michael Crichton’s original novel in terms of tone and genre. That book was a straight-up horror story at points, and I could easily see how going in that direction could work with the right filmmaker. For instance, there’s a video that narrates what happens to Nedry (Wayne Knight’s character) in the book, and it’s BRUTAL. Though, if a full-on JP horror is made, they should go all-in on it. Spielberg was able to combine the action and themes with genuine horror, but if they lean in on the horror in the future, I’d love to see them try to stick to it even more.

I'm also a weird odd voice out here because I also thought Dominion was much better than the last two Jurassic World movies. Yeah, it doesn't do what it promised - dinosaurs running amok and leading humans to extinction - but what it promised was brain-dead stupid. There is no way about 50 dinos in Northen California cause a worldwide ecological disaster. It would cause problems, sure, but nothing apocalyptic. As much as people rags on the locusts and the clone, that idea is a lot more Crichtonian than anything since the Grant lecture scene in III. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Crichton's last novel, Next. And it's also not that far-fetched an idea. Companies likes Monsanto have done some screwed up shit with GMOs to monopolize a certain kind of crop. We haven't got to GMO locust yet, but it's something people have thought about. Likewise, Dodgson makes much more sense if you read the books, because he's the main villain of the second book. Biosyn is also a lot more of a presence in the novels. So it didn't feel like a desperate callback to one scene in JP, it felt like going back to the original. The clone is again reminiscent of Next, and yeah it is a major retcon, but hey, Crichton's own sequel to JP was also based on manor retcons (Site B, Malcom being alive), so it's par for the course at this point. Finally, sidelining Claire and Owen for most of the movie is a good thing, because they are horrible and I can't stand them. So yeah, I liked it much more that was expecting, mostly for all the reasons people hated it. Don't get me wrong, it does a lot of stupid stuff, and it's not good, but it was promising to be some much stupider that I was pleasantly surprised.

Great review of Jurassic World Dominion and I highly agree with everything you on this video. This movie massively disappointing me and it could be one of the most disappointing dinosaur movies I’ve ever seen the year 2022 ever since The Adventures of Buck Wild. I’m a huge fan of the Jurassic World Series especially Jurassic World and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom and not to mention with Camp Cretaceous and Battle At Big Rock which most of the dinosaur characters get more screen time and appearances and even the Prologue of Jurassic World Dominion which is much better than the actual movie itself, I’m a huge Jurassic World fan and I’m a defender of the franchise except for Jurassic World Dominion. The biggest problem I had with Jurassic World Dominion is that none of the dinosaur characters even show up in the movie and they barely got any screen time and barely played any role which is so disappointing. I can’t believe this took away the charm and emotion of what made the two Jurassic World movies so good and exciting and this seriously had so much potential to make the movie exciting because dinosaurs are amazing and they need to get more screen time and because of the movie focusing on human characters all the time and careless about the dinosaurs is what made the movie very predictable and a total Dino letdown for me. I would definitely stay away from this movie and probably stick with the two Jurassic movies because those are way better than Jurassic World Dominion and not to mention that there’s a new dinosaur series in 2022 which is much better and that’s Prehistoric Planet because that’s what Jurassic World Dominion should’ve been like because the dinosaur characters get more screen time instead of people all the time and I hope Camp Cretaceous Season Five would do better than Jurassic World Dominion and probably fix the problems that Dominion had and be a lot better. Great video and I definitely agree with everything you said in this video but I respect your opinion on Fallen Kingdom.

I think if they had made one really good 90 minute film people would have come back for a good 90 minute finale. It occurs to me that these films after the first, especially the World films is that the films have gone from being interesting an interesting meditation of man's relationship to nature and playing god to essentially just being glorified Sci-Fi channel shlock with a huge budget and actors people actually would be interested in. And Dinosaurs being 3 stooges level of dumb for the cast to survive in one piece but the nameless mooks have to deal with keen hunting instinct ones that eat them quickly also shows the limits of how much Dinosaurs can be threats in these films.

If you want to see dinosaurs behave in ways that aren’t horrifically stereotypical, I’d recommend checking out prehistoric planet. No humans to get in the way, the prehistoric creatures like actual animals would, using the latest science (with a healthy dose of grounded speculation) rather than just going for nostalgia and it even has appearances of some of the animals featured in this film. The Dreadnoughtus fight scene in the second episode is a highlight, because it was made to challenge the notion that sauropods were nothing but gentle giants.

It's really baffling that no jurassic park movie since the first one has known what to do with dinosaurs, the lack of creativity around such a fun premice is truly sad. They all try to emulate what the first one was and that's exactly why they fail because they just won't do it better and that's not what a sequel is supposed to do to be exciting. Even with nostalgia googles it doesn't hold up. For f**** sake you have dinosaurs and the whole world to play around and all you can do is trying to be jurassic park 1 :/ even kids with toy t-rexes could spit fun ideas but that involves taking risks, trying to dabble in other genres or a different message and standing on your own feet... that's not what these blockbusters are about :/ just cashing in on the name and trying to be the same movie with a different skin again and again and again.

That and the first Jurassic World (which I didn't see, BTW) I feel are the only sequels that actually do something different with the idea, at least from a visual stand point. At this point, you really can't do anything new with dinosaurs unless you throw in cowboys, aliens, and race cars.

I don’t know. I would sooner take Fallen Kingdom over Dominion, because at least that movie was memorably bonkers. I was just bored by this one, and where I’ve actually appreciated that the World movies made the dinosaurs feel like actual *characters,* they don’t have much personality here.

2:58 good for you mate its an awful film and this new one looks awful too, how can a velociraptor be domesticated? Just seems like they are throwing too much into the pot here. I can imagine a room of executives desperately seeking "what can we do next?" and throwing all sort of ludicrous ideas onto the table, it all gets mixed up and mashed up into some kinda of disgusting Frankenstein's monster a compromise between all their bad ideas, then they just need a hack director willing to make the monstrosity. Basically because of the IP they know it will sell.

What i don´t understand is why people are defending this movie just because its entertaining, like, no, its really bad, is not even fun to watch, even with "the brain turned off". Its not even better than Fallen Kingdom, this movie makes Jurassic Park 3 like a freaking masterpiece. I really hated the movie for a lot of reasons that you talk about it. and yes, Dominion has its moments, but outside of that, just feels wrong. They literally repeated the Star Wars New Trilogy situation, what can you really expect from the writter of Pacific Rim 2? When they decide that the main focus of a Dinosaur Movie are not the dinosaurs?

Jurassic Park has always had a fundamental problem; basically there are only 2 interesting plots. You either have dinosaurs running rampage, eating humans in a theme park setting, or you have dinosaurs running rampage, eating humans in a 'human' setting like a city. So at best you can scrape 2 decent films, maybe a third out of it. After that its just going to be a rehash of the same stuff, oh and I guess you could cram some absurd genetically engineering dinosaurs into weapons, subplot in somewhere....

I didn't like the black smuggler woman- to me her character felt like she was shoehorned in along with the white woman with laser light- Actually I didn't like any character in the movie except for the Therizinosaurus. They massacred this movie- I felt like I watching the new star wars, james bond and a sitcom.

I think this movie is one of the best of all time. Its fun, it has a phenomenal story, outstanding actors especially the new ones. Dodgson was just brilliant. Hell and those dinsosaur scenes .... just wow. You really feel the danger. Things i would change: Too much talking. A bit more action would helped a lot. Story is brilliant but too complex. I would reduce complexity. like camp cretaceous. I want to be entertained not having to think like a scientist about the plot. Also the diversity message at the end is just brilliant and inspirational. On the other hand i think theres too much brutality. Do we really need to see the dinosaurs killing so many people? Thats something i would change. I watched the movie 9 times till now and i am still not bored by it. Thats what a movie should be. In my opinion its even better than Jurassic Park 1. JP1 was just too nerdy, too slow too much talking and i still don't understand the hype around the movie. I hope they make a real life actor series with the clone girl. Maybe she can control the dinosaurs telekinetically. Or maybe there is some scientifical breakthrough where the dinosaurs can stop climate change in an bipartisan effort with humans. Also they could engineer the dinsoaurs so that they are all female. As we know females are a peaceful gender in comparison to men. And so we could coexist. Would be really interesting to show that a peaceful coexistance between dinosaurs and humans could be possible.
