Yeah this is one of those action games that doesn't really explain it's deeper mechanics all that much. Enemies telegraphs their attacks pretty well so that hints at the game wanting you to do stuff, but when I first played this I instantly understood how that IGN review managed to happen. I actually had something similar happen to me with DMC3. What the game expected from me wasn't clear to me at all and ended up hating it after the first couple of bosses, especially with how punishing it was. God Hand's great though. Like you said, every basic action feels good. So you can imagine how much better shit feels once you get adequate. There's a lot of videos out there talking about the game like it's a fucking science, but really it's just a game about crafting your own combo chains to fit with the enemies attack patterns. If you see a dude starting his combo by kicking up high for instance, a good thing to do would be to start your chain with a floor sweep so you can get them off the ground easily. And every stage will have different enemies, demanding that you mess around and die a few times to learn what need do. Really digging these one off let's play style videos by the way!
