I am disabled and as it has advanced I have lost my ability to create by crochet. It really gave my life meaning and picking up sewing really saved me by giving me a creative outlet that is also useful. If not for women gifting me with fabric, I would be lost.

I've enjoyed this series immensely. I'm older and have lived in my house for 34 years. It's pretty scary how much can accumulate in that time. Purging is ongoing. Hearing how other people approach "stuff" gives me new ideas on how to part with some of mine. When someone gives me fabric or sewing notions I enjoy... I'm thrilled... so parting with things to give other people the thrill... that's great, too. I've seen it referenced as blessing someone else with it and that gives it extra context for me. So much of what you've said resonates. I don't want my hobby to be the accumulation... but rather the using.

I too don't like one use items. I think my wedding dress is pretty and I am glad I made it myself but none of my girls wanted it and I just have it in a box in the attic. There is a charity that remakes wedding dresses and other one use formal gowns into baby dresses and outfits for babies that died in hospitals. I am thinking about donating my dress to them. Anyway. good talk. I have given away lots of fabric and a lot of fabric was given to me. Some I kept and made things from and some is just for mock up. Also - Days for Girls is a great place to donate fabric. They cannot take everything but they have giving guides on their website. Great organization.

What a wonderful goal! Have you ever heard of Dress a Girl project? It it is a charity that I (and many other here on KZbin) participate in to sew dresses for little girls who live in extreme poverty.

For my part, I enjoyed your decluttering videos a lot more than those "pattern and fabric haul" videos 😊 I refuse to watch those, no more. Except I saw one where the lady shopped her own stash 😊 I agree with you that many online conversations are superficial and just encourage consumerism. While I agree that sewing can be a creative outlet, in my life it is more like the old fashioned craft that feels a need. Yes, I can be aa creative as I choose , but at the end of the day, I am not creating something beautiful just for the sake of being creative, I do it so I can have good clothes that fit my lifestyle. I don't need go buy 20 patterns each season, or yards and yards of fabric. I am still slowly working through my stash and very happy knowing the fabrics I have kept are ones that suit my day to day life.

Thank you for sharing ❤I want fabric to be cherished and used - sometimes my tastes change or I realize I bought materials & patterns because I got caught up in a trend and don't end up making the project. I pass materials along to family members that are retired and use the fabric for craft fair items - win/win! Every time I do a declutter/sort, I'm reconnected to the materials/projects and get inspired to create! I also become more mindful about acquiring materials/patterns in the future. Before internet shopping, when I wanted to make a garment/project, it was a trip to the local fabric/craft store to pick the pattern, fabric & notions - then home to wash it up and get cutting & sewing! Rarely did projects lay around before completing. I really appreciate the ability to purchase materials & notions and have them sent to my home - but I'm trying to keep a balance between acquiring and making.

I agree, giving away fabric that you don't want is great. I go to the thrift store every week. I buy fabric that someone didn't want, but I could find a use for it. I am a sewer, knitter, weaver, yarn spinner, and I have had a home job of doing alterations when my kids were small. I really enjoy your creative uses for scraps. I just bought two dresses from the thrift store today that are too small, but I like the fabric. I am going to try and make something else from them. Wish me luck.

I am an Alicia fan, I love your content, your voice and mannerism. You are a joy. Many years ago my very young son, Craig showed me the joy in making costumes. We worked together on many, including ET, which was very time consuming. It will always be special times for both of us. I loved this video and the organising series really helped me. Those of us with chronic health problems can't afford to let things build up, although we do, because it becomes detrimental to the joy sewing brings. The WIP session have me the motivation to go through mine. You raise a very important point about how our styles etc change so we find ourselves with stuff we're not going to use anyway. Wow, this was an interesting series because for someone like me that enjoys accumulating fabric and sewing supplies, the only reason that I had to declutter is when I had to move. We moved multiple times but for me sewing supplies and fabric means stability and setting roots if that makes sense so that replaces the guilt. But on the other hand and since I’m in a kinda stable period of my life I like your approach to do it once a year as a part of spring cleaning and refresh.

As someone who makes elaborate Halloween costumes for my daughter (and sometimes myself) every year l can tell you that the storage of said costumes takes up a lot of space! 😂😂

I bet! I want to say - I appreciate all of the Halloween costumes and cosplay and things like that! Perhaps I would make one in the future (and by the way, me and my husband used to be into Renaissance Fairs, we still are, but life is busy so we haven't attended one in years, and I made my own corset and a skirt and a puffy shirt, but I did wear it for many, many festivals and fairs until I gave it away), I am not a costume police lol :) I am just having a hard time with it in my own head/sewing. And as for the storage - my mom sent me some VERY elaborate costumes she made for me when I was about 7, and... boy, they do take a lot of space! On a bright side, my daughter can now play with them, and I do have great memories wearing them, but I wore them once, maybe twice before I grew out. What's your favorite costume you have made to date?

Thanks Alisa! Loved your talk on why we all sew and my main reason is I love to make things but also up cycle my clothing too as I am a size 8 down from a 10/12 size. I too sorted out my fabric stash and thought to myself gosh I need to do a keep and give away or sell as am moving soon. Had our house with the Real Estate agent open for 6 appointments today which meant we went to breakfast and then got lunch and to fill in time went to the beach for a short walk etc. to fill in the time. Hoping to start packing the sewing room fabrics and sort out what I am wanting to use while our house will be getting built as we will be living in our caravan and doing short trips and staying a week at a time in places. Got to get my sewing machine serviced before we go so I can have the time to sew small projects whilst we are in one place etc.

I’m recently returning to my sewing hobby, and Ive been looking at lots of amazing content out here on social media… but hardly any of it from the perspective of someone trying to minimize/right size the influx of stuff. It’s so easy to accumulate more than I will ever use! Over the years when I didn’t have time to sew, I gradually “decluttered” boxes & bins of fabrics, notions, patterns, tools I had acquired & never used over the years… and though I’m enjoying getting back to my hobby, I definitely don’t want to go back to managing a “stash”. (And I don’t miss a single item I got rid of, now that my sewjo is back, either, lol). I’m trying to stick with a strategy of only buying what I need, when I need it. I get that’s not everyone’s thing, but it’s how I’m enjoying my sewing… thanks for sharing your perspective!

I personally like when content creators, give us a little insight as to who they are in Q & A type videos. You're so right, otherwise it does feel very transactional. Why someone would feel De-cluttering and Organizing your sewing room, is moving away from your typical content, is odd. I think a true crafter/sewer would love content with tips and ideas on how to. I had my materials stacked vertically and just switched it this past weekend. I was able to get about 30% more into the space. I don’t have much at all, so it wasn’t a matter of not letting go. I just do too many things in one room. Funny, the only thing we stack vertically is our dish towels. I wonder why towels are so much more conducive to that method. You’re constantly resourceful. That person was just having a bad day and took it out on you. Shake it off. :)

Hi, thank you for the video ❤ I think being thoughtful when creating something is important and I'm now on this sewing level that most of my projects fit and are wearable. BUT it wasn't the case a few years ago. Every other project turned out to be disaster for one reason or another. And of course one can use the failed project as a fabric for another one but some of the fabric is going to be wasted nevertheless. So I guess wasting some resources is just a part of learning something new. You can do it in a more or less midfull way but still being afraid of wasting any fabric is not helpful while learning.

Oh for sure! I can relate and have another good example for this from another form of art - watercolors. I used to nag myself for wasting watercolor paper, which can be pricey, but then I realized that I NEED the paper to practice and to get better, so some waste is going to happen no matter what. :) thank you for sharing, Joanna! :)

The Marie Kondo vertical storage did not work for me either. Everything kept tumbling over. It was messier, in my experience. I prefer stacked, folded storage, too.

If people criticized you for making content they don’t prefer (declutterring video), that’s not your problem. They need to not watch that video 😅 You are not responsible for the fact that they are zombies on KZbin who watch anything that appears in front of their eyes…. Declutterring is a genre that makes sense for a sewing channel. Also, dying fabric is using tons of toxic chemicals that go straight down the drain and one use outfits are also wasteful, and dying polyester is not easy, so how is that being more resourceful than giving your fabric away. Keep being lovely!!!❤❤❤

I have watched several sewing and quilting channels with decluttering and organizing videos. I look forward to them. If these channels have content I'm not interested in, i just don't watch that video. Frankly, not only can others benefit from items I give away and donate, but I have been a recipient from others doing the same in the past. I used to belong to a quilt guild and worked in a quilt shop. I don't typically fall into trends due to pressure, but sewing and quilting is something I love so much, and to finally be around people who shared my passion was kind of new to me, so I started second guessing myself....maybe I'm not being open minded enough, maybe I need to learn and have every notion, book or supply to really be considered credible? Fortunately it wasn't financially feasible for me to buy everything, and some things I did I loved and others I found I either hated or just enjoyed seeing the fruits of somebody else's labor and it wasn't my cup of tea. I watch these cleaning and organizing/editing videos because sometimes someone shares something I didn't think of and it helps me out. After recently having one month to clear out a relative's apartment crammed with items never opened or used, it really opened my eyes even more to not just giving items away, but about what I purchase for my passion in the future. For my birthday last month I requested items for my sewing room to replace broken and badly worn items I constantly use, and I do listen to videos that talk about sewing and quilting notions and decide if any make sense for me. Two I'm so happy I requested as gifts are a cordless iron, because it makes ironing large items like quilts so much easier for me, and a wool pressing mat because it really does help my quilting block lay really flat. My daughter got me a new rotary ruler to replace my favorite nicked and worn one, new straight pins to replace so many bent pins, and new Frixion marking pens because my old ones dried out. The point of these videos is to help people really think about what they use and don't, not to guilt people into using item they don't really enjoy anymore and not feel guilty about letting them go, and to give ideas about how to deal with what's there.
