I am a huge fan of Peter Jones but had never seen him. It's weird to see an unfamiliar face speaking with a very familiar voice. He seemed so lovely.

Wendy Richard comes across in a not very pleasing way. I wouldn't like to sit across from her at dinner... I'd have indigestion for the rest of the week.

Be as that may Tom, an appearance on this type of quiz show tends to be more successful when one is less competitive and more aware of the pastime's amicable parlor game roots.

@@ArtistAllanWesti disagree, as a large part of thr enjoyment tends to come from.people that at least pretended to take the game seriously, and people actually cared about wanting a chance to speak on a subject or argue about thr points they were making if they have a subject un fairly taken away under the guise of deviation. Sure people.shpuodnt be too competitive but they shouldnt be overly apologetic about it either.

Does anyone happen to have any copies of the 1991-93 series "The Brain Drain" 1st or 2nd series, main cast being Jo Brand and Tony Hawks? Although very funny, it only lasted 2 series unfortunately.

This is a bit fogeyish compared to more recent ones, I think they've made a decision to keep it mostly young since then (Nicholas excepted, obviously). Lots of dodgy decisions e.g. "sometimes/times" being taken as a repetition early on, and yes, "all over the auction" - nothing wrong with it. Someone suggested the older episodes from the 60s (or more particularly the 70s) - I agree, my dream line-up would include Kenneth Williams, probably Peter Jones and maybe Freud and Nimmo. Peter Cook was never that great at playing the game but was funny in the few episodes he was in. I think Williams/Merton/Fry/Perkins would be a great line-up for playing the game well.

They seem older because they talk slowly and deliberately. Their style of humor isn't the snappy wit of Paul Merton or Sue Perkins, who aren't spring chickens themselves, but seem younger because of their energy level. This show isn't a good fit for them. Pam Ayres' humorous poetry creeps up on you. Linda Smith's Brief History of Timewasting requires the listener to sit down and concentrate to get the full flavor. Peter Jones is also low-keyed, even low-energy. Wendy Richard in contrast comes across as too harsh. Nicholas Parsons struggles to get them to relax and enjoy themselves.

Quite a few new uploads from around 1979-80 on youtube. I'm not keen on the new recruits in recent years; too many narcissists! who seem to be there to have their narcissism nourished (repetition?! no, two different words!) My ideal line up: Derek, Peter, Clement (who were team players) and I'd have to add Giles Brendreth who was made for it!

Id disagree that Peter Cook was no good at the game, he seemed a perfect fit for JAM given he had great fluency, intellect, humor and wit. He picked up on the absurdity JAM generates right away honestly.

Nicholas really had it in for Linda Smith, penalising her for 'all over the auction', which is a lovely old English idiom. Whereas he's tiptoeing around Wendy Richards, who's being her usual acerbic self.

It wouldnt be the only time Nick was unfair to Linda. There was one episode during a round inforget the subject, i thinknit qas Achilles Heel, but she was talking about getting shoes with an extra wide fitting and was challenged for deviation by atony Hawks who argued that uf shies dont fit you dint get wider shoes ypu get longer shoes, and Linda argued her point well cuz the heel is three dimension.and you need somethingqider as well to fit properly, it why some sjoes come with a number and a W attached.cuz its a wide fitting, and Nicholas had the temerity to say that Linda didnt have a leg to stand on.

how for all these years when there is a challenge for repitition does Parsons manage to remember if they did say the word already - often some words are first said ages before they are repeated

'All over the auction' is not against the rules! People say 'all over the shop' but it doesn't mean they're in a shop! I also think it odd that Wendy says 'I like to be all tucked in as I don't like duvets...' but how can they be all tucked in? I assume she means she sleeps with them all tucked in but how would she tuck them in once in bed?!

Was it really ? For example, i find that Clement Freud's participation in JAM was, frankly, just a waste of everyone's time. Maybe the age got to him, but he was a regular on the show for years after he stopped being relevant or remotely amusing.
