Great job on the repair. Are those metal lines original or aftermarket?
@giovannipenagos23514 жыл бұрын
They are the original from 1984. Rusted from the inside out.

In my opinion, if you don't address anything else on these vans, the coolant pipes/lines/ radiator and fuel system are very important to check out up front! Great improvised road fix!
@gottasplit57074 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Cooling parts should be the first things to be upgraded along with the fuel lines. They usually don't give any signs they are bad until they break at a very inopportune time.

I've not filmed in 2 months! Good job to you and your friend :) I'm changing out my fuel lines this weekend. I'm now wondering if I change out the canister. Did that help anything as you expected?
@gottasplit57074 жыл бұрын
I know the feeling. This was the first thing I've filmed in a month. If you don't have problems with your fuel tank making a clunking noise after it's been run for a while, don't change the canister out. I didn't show it in the video, but it was a real pain to find a way to hook it up. I actually stopped filming so I could focus on figuring it out for that portion. I ended up having to put a few adapters together to make it work. It did solve my clunking issue though.

Noticed Geo's van was flying straight as a bird. Yours seemed like it might have a slight vibration. Perhaps a bushing issue. Not sure which one, you may need to replace them all ...... :) Little bird told me GoWesty finally has them all back in stock.
@gottasplit57074 жыл бұрын
Haha, definitely not trying to get me to do a bushing replacement video at all. It's on the list. Still want to get a slightly lifted spring set and new shocks. Gonna try to do everything at once.

Why did the metal lines rub together? Where were they bought from? I’m installing stainless steel lines on my van this week from Gowesty...
@gottasplit57073 жыл бұрын
They were the factory steel lines. Really I think it was the rust that got them, not them rubbing together.

Any plans on putting on some 16" wheels on your Westy? Made worlds of a difference for me.
@gottasplit57074 жыл бұрын
I might put some 16" wheels on the van, but if I do it will be way down the road. larger wheels will make it more difficult for my van to climb hills, and with this engine, I need a much help as I can get. Will also need to raise the van before I get larger wheels.
@ryang77204 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I live in California and it has zero effect on my ability to climb hills. Helped a lot with my coasting speed as well. Btw my vanagon is aircooled on grabber at2 tires.
@gottasplit57074 жыл бұрын
@@ryang7720 16s and Grabbers? Do you have a lifted suspension? I was wondering if that combo would work since I like those tires a lot, but thought they might rub.
@ryang77204 жыл бұрын
@@gottasplit5707 I have the heavy duty bilstein shocks. Not sure how much of a lift it gave me. About 1-1.5" my at2 grabbers are 215/70R16s. They are terrific. Minimal road noise. I have absolutely zero rub. I'm not running spacers or anything either. Easily the best mod for my car. I have the south African kit like you too. Love it. My biggest mistake was putting on those heavy steel front and rear bumpers from go westy. I just couldn't help it though. They just look too good.

For the charcoal canister, any chance you could leave a link to the conversion parts? Thanks :) Kobe
@gottasplit57074 жыл бұрын
Here's the link to the canister: www.gowesty.com/product/fuel-delivery/25317/charcoal-emissions-canister?v= The parts I actually used to reduce the oval outlet to the small hose I honestly have no idea how to find on the internet. I ended up stuffing a vacuum line reducer into the oval outlet that happened to have the same size port on the small side for the hose that attached to the intake. I got that at ACE Hardware. Best I can tell you is to take the intake hose and the canister with you to a home goods store and find something that will be able to connect the two with the least amount of connectors.

@@gottasplit5707 Roger that! Asking RMW to make a shopping list for us so we can order everything required and get that cooling system stabilized. We are in Canada and the Van is covered in frost so I'm doing "in door" electrical mods until we have all the cooling system stuff on our doorstep :)

I’m beginning to believe the world has moved on from the vanagon. I have an ‘84 1.9L without a/c and no one here where I live in Arkansas will touch it. I talked to a gentleman in Boulder,CO who said he could put a Subie motor in it but he’s put me off three times in the past 18 month and now the van doesn’t run. Boulder is 12 hours from my house with the van on a dolly. Not an attractive trip. Are you guys giving up on the metal coolant tubes? GoWesty or VanLife can overnite new ones to you. Get some rubber blocks and separate the tubes. The guy with the ramps(Steve) was a real savior. The van community isn’t something I would know how to tap into.

Yeah, it has gotten hard to find good mechanics here as well. Best to do the work yourself and know it is done right, or at least how everything goes together. Steve for sure was the MVP of this trip. We were able to get in contact with him through the Van Alert app. It's super helpful for finding mechanics and other Vanagon and bus owners to help in an emergency. In my van, I replaced my lines with stainless ones. They have been great so far.
