Awesome! Thats gonna be a ton of power! Mine has been holding up great. I've really only done regular maintenance stuff to it. It's even powering an A/C now, and doesn't seem to notice the extra load.

What is the price for this size? Has it been reliable? Does it push the wagon properly threw town and up hills?

This is a 1904cc engine, but I can't remember the exact price at the moment. You can email CB Performance and they will probably be able to tell you what price and time frame to expect for a built engine. It has been very reliable. All I've done is keep up with regular maintenance, and it's been running great. Lots of power to get anywhere I need to go.

Jaaa cool. I was actually thinking about installing the same exact engine. But I was looking at the builders kit. Didn't know you could buy it already assembled. Wow that must have cost a fortune, having them assemble it and then ship it out. I'm lucky I live in California so I could just drive to CB Performance and pick it up, but the engine must have been around $8k with shipping? Let us know. I am also curious about power. 1904 seems small compared to what others run. I think 1904 is their smaller engine option and wasn't sure it was enough, but sounds to me like it does good. I will probably go with this set up, but try to build it myself. I just want to start with a new case though, so we'll see how it goes.

Hector Bernaldo It’s still got a stock transmission with reduction boxes. I would like to upgrade to a Fwy Flyer in the future, but I’d like to keep the reduction boxes since I want to keep my bus stick height. I’m pretty comfortable with just going 65 mph. I have disk brakes in the front, but they are still not amazing.

How are you finding your 1904cc? It's been a year. Are the carbs behaving? Do you know what your oil temperature runs at after say 2-3 hours at 65mph? Is the PCV being maintained? I'm going to rebuild my stock 1600 soon. I might go to 1776 or just keep it stock 1600. Gotta love the blue split :-)
@gottasplit5707
@gottasplit5707 3 жыл бұрын
I've been super happy with it. Other than the regular oil and filter changes and valve gap checking, I've had to do no other maintenance. It's always ready to go for a drive. I'm not exactly sure about oil temps, but I will be installing an oil temp and RPM gauge within the next month or so. Then I'll see what it is while running. With the fryer thermometer I use in the dip stick I see maybe 190 degrees at the hottest. It stays pretty cool. I also have a fan on the external oil cooler that I've only once heard turn on. That is on a 185 degree Fahrenheit thermostat, so it must not get hotter than that. If you build a larger engine, make sure you upgrade the cooling accordingly. Right now I have a larger than normal fan, external oil cooler with a fan, a filter, larger oil sump, and 36hp fan shroud with a doghouse oil cooler. Good luck with it!

@@gottasplit5707 Thanks a bunch, 190 is good. I'm glad its all going well. 190 max on a 95 degree day I'd say would be great, (comparing with my 1600 DP and assuming you get those temps where you are)- and for your future comparison for when you get your gauges installed- but I'm no expert)...when I drive 50mph for hours on end my oil temp sits on 175 degrees. If I go up to 55mph the oil temp goes up to 185 degrees. This is for any outside temp of up to about 85 degrees. Any outside temp above that my oil temp reaches around 210 at 50 or 55mph and stays there. I don't really push my 1600 any harder than that but there's a good 20-30% left before my foot touches the floor.
@gottasplit5707
@gottasplit5707 3 жыл бұрын
I'll definitely get back to you with the temps when I get that gauge in. Maybe I'll make a video on it. Ive always wondered if doing stuff like leaving the engine hatch open would make a difference on the highway and in traffic. Also to see how much of a difference my AC makes.
@Chiefsongs
@Chiefsongs 3 жыл бұрын
@@gottasplit5707 Cool! I believe if the engine lid is left open either the fan or the intake or both suck hot air back into the engine and over the cylinder cooling thins just making it hotter. I've had experience of this BUT when I went to Giza Egypt to have a look at the pyramids it was 100 degrees all day every day and there are so many type 2 buses on the road there- they use them as taxi's. Anyways, they keep their engine lids open, assuming due to the heat. They all had 1600's in them too. That sort of heat though, there's probably no real escaping it.

My dream motor on a single carb 34pct
@mvd2321
@mvd2321 3 жыл бұрын
You will likely find that the 34PICT carbs are too small. They were designed too small for the 1600. I was going to do the exact same thing and had many guys on The Samba say don’t do it. Engine will run too lean and burn out your pistons. Duals are the way to go for this size engine.

Hi Guys. How R things in Texas? Building a new engine for my 71 Westy. Why do you believe this is the best motor ever? Im gunning for a very reliable, good power, good torgue engine for long distance road trips. My 1641 has 100,000 miles on it, and its just now tired. Family has grown, so a bit more power needed. Was thinking about an 1800 74x88 dual Weber 40. Thoughts from yo on what makes the 1904 a better option. We live in Toronto Canada.

@@mvd2321 I'll reply. Counter balanced crank (hello?), thickest cylinder wall (again), with "Highway flyer" gearing best fuel mileage and longevity. With increased torque of the stroker crank can run lower rpm.

My brother raced a Kharman Ghia in Lemons races. They made the front of the car look like the face on a .....It was amazing how quickly they could get that engine in and out of their car. That motor you have is a drop dead gorgeous package. As an old split window owner I am so jealous. As to breaking an engine, I’ve always subscribed to the theory that you give an engine 300 miles, change the Oil and then drive it like you always intend to. So, without changing the gearing you can now go interstate speeds?
@gottasplit5707
@gottasplit5707 5 жыл бұрын
Kim Horton yup, can now cruise at 60-65 with no problem at any incline with wind. Runs nice and cool with that big oil cooler also. For the break in, I changed the oil at 100 miles, then again at 500 miles, and now every 1500 miles. 1500 is super excessive I know, but it’s what Pat recommended to me. The tolerances on this one are super tight. Even the valve gap is at .002 instead of .006.

Good choices, for both the source of this motor and its size and specs. For breaking it in just drive it normally on the street. Don't abuse it and don't baby it. Take it to good VW mechanic to change the oil and adjust the valves after about 400 miles or so . If it was built right, driven with enough oil and cooling air then it should be fine and with regular maintenance give you years of trouble free fun. Good luck.

Thanks for the video. We are restoring our 71 Westy with our 7 year old. Already a fair welder, we are now tackling our engine. Our 1904 is almost the same build! Have not purchased it all yet, but plan on building it ourselves. Im a big block Ford guy from years back so am keen on teaching our son how to build. So.... Question please. Did you consider a single progressive carb over the duals? In Canada, cool mornings and evenings in spring and fall make me leery of non heated carb manifolds on the duals. With your duals, what kind of mileage are you getting? We run about 15,000 miles a year on our bus so good mileage ensures we can drive further. Thanks Mate. I appreciate your insight and experience in helping me design and build our perfect mill. Cheers.
@gottasplit5707
@gottasplit5707 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! I did think about a single carb, but decided to go with dual carbs for a better air fuel mixture. With a single carb, the adjustment for all the cylinders will be to the richest burning cylinder. I've heard this can also actually lower fuel milage, but I've never tested that myself. I usually get around 17 to 19 mpg, which isn't too bad, but with such a small tank in the split window I do end up filling up a lot on road trips. I wouldn't worry much about carb icing on dual carbs. If anything they do it less than the single carb. The intakes are so short to the heads and made of such thick aluminum, that I don't think the weather will affect it much. the shorter distance to the heads will also make it less likely the fuel vapor will turn back into liquid on the way to the cylinder. But, I'd say the biggest duel carb benefit is POWER! Haha. The biggest downsides are tuning them and how much changes in altitude effect their mixture compared with the single carb. Hope this helps with your decision. Good luck with it, and happy travels! ✌️

Can definitely feel the difference in power! I still have a stock transmission and I’m still running reduction boxes. Can’t floor it off the line without risking the transmission, or do much passed 65 because of the RPM. Merging on the highway and getting into traffic is much safer now though. Going uphill is no problem now also. The cam I have is part number 2280 on the CB Performance website. Here are the specs for it: Adv.
