This is the song that brings me back to the Vietnam War era more than any other recording. He was ridiculously talented and he stood out even in that time when we were blessed with an embarrassment of riches when it came to musical talent.

A couple of other side notes on this legend. His family were poor sharecroppers in Arkansas but they could all play music. His Uncle taught him the basics of guitar, by age 6 he was performing on a local radio show. He played on tens of thousands of hit songs in many genres country, surf, garage, jazz, soundtracks you name it he did it. Amazingly he could not read music at all but had an incredible ear and played with great artistry. He is sorely missed. More Glen please!

Glen Campbell was one of the greatest guitarists of all-time. Glen was a session guitarist for a decade until his solo career took off. Watch him live and play "Gentle on My Mind" from the 1983 Hee Haw tv show. What him duet with the great Roy Clark and play "Ghostriders in the Sky" from 1990 Hee Haw episode. You'll see what a great guitarist he was. Both videos are on KZbin. Died of Alzheimer's in 2017.

In 1968 Glen Campbell won the CMA ( Country Music Association) Male Vocalist of the Year and also ACM (Academy of Country Music) Male Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. His music was so good, everyone was listening, he was on the radio and also on TV shows. Even though I was a kid back then, we definitely knew his genre was Country music.

Songwriter Jimmy Webb sent this to him as a partial demo thinking he was going to write a third verse to “finish” the song. Weeks later found out Glenn had already recorded it and just gave it a long outro

This is country. The 70s had different styles and this was one of them, country crooning. It is a departure from traditional country instrumentals and closer the pop music of the time. Glen still plays his country licks.

He is a country crooner here, but there is more production polish than the typical country songs of its time. Glen was definitely a cross genre success. He even had a television variety show.

Country music has often had crossover appeal, ans this one did, and so can show up on multiple Billboard charts. If people want to argue about the categorization of individual GC songs they are certainly welcome to do so, but he is generally considered a country artist. It’s. broad genre.

Many of the younger generations don't really get it! In the 60's & 70's we had as many young men go to war as we had as many young women left behind from all over the country. When you played Glen, I started to cry. He tugged on my stugged on 💔 again!

He was blessed with a great singing voice too, let alone a great guitarist. You should check out a poignant song and official video he did for his last CD, written by Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, "Ghost on the Canvas". The video makes nods to his previous hit "Wichita Lineman" . Knowing he had the Alzheimer's diagnosis when he recorded it adds to the poignancy of the song.

You should react to the movie "The Wrecking Crew". I bet folks don't realize how many hit songs were actually recorded by folks other than the group that "claimed" them back in the 60's and 70's.

Glen Campbell is from Arkansas, so yeah southern accent, and country oriented. He’s an amazing guitarist. I don’t think he could read music so his achievements are even more remarkable. His TV show gave a platform to so many singers, groups, musicians. This was well before internet, mtv, etc. I remember watching his music show every week as a teenager.

Glen was close friends with rocker Alice Cooper. Alice Cooper says they were opposites musically but were very close with everything else. They played golf together weekly for many years. I watched Glen's weekly variety show, as a kid, from 1969 to 1972. He had some great musical acts on that show.

This look like the variety show he had, he was super guitar player but often stuck to singing on the show. He said he was not necessarily a country musician, he just came from that. He played on Beach Boys records, Frank Sinatra, everything before he broke through as a singer. A studio musician making $100,000 year. He was liked by multiple generations and genres. He did a movie with John Wayne...the original True Grit in 1969.

It’s crossover country for the masses of the time. Almost all country artists got the easy listening and orchestral production touches during that period and it was very successful. If you can listen to it driving down a dirt road it’s country haha.

'emo'...chuckle. Maybe. But as i mentioned in the Wichita Lineman (my fav Campbell song) vid, he was a huge crossover artist, country and pop. Its not explicitly mentioned in the song, but this was the Vietnam era and in that light the lyrics of keeping the gun and leaving the girl behind as the guy goes off to war makes sense. Fun fact, Campbell was a golfing buddy with Alice Cooper in Scottsdale, yes that Alice.

I was probably 12 or 13 when this song came out and it was in the lane of music my mother would've listened to then. At the time, we thought of this as country. If this were easy listening then there were a lot of other country artists that would've been easy-listening. There was also another class of music called western when I was young. Hence the term Country & Western. The western artists would've been people like Hank Snow or Patsy Cline etc. But then again, genres seemed to have evolved over time... Don't get me started on the use of the "pop" label nowadays :). Emo eh? That begs the question then, is it country-emo or emo-country?
@AnnieDC304
@AnnieDC304 Күн бұрын
When this song came out radio was the medium, and there were far fewer outlets, so the genres weren’t as segregated as they are now. The station my mother listened to was MOR/pop, and in a one hour car trip you could hear Simon & Garfunkel, Glen Campbell, The Beatles, Otis Redding, Dean Martin, Patsy Cline, Peter Paul & Mary, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Mamas & The Papas, The Hollies, Andy Williams, Elvis, Charlie Rich, Johnny Cash, Smokey Robinson, etc. Crossover of genres was much more common than it is now.

@@AnnieDC304 Yup, that's certainly true enough. I also recall light-rock, rock, hard-rock, & heavy-rock (later to be called heavy-metal and then just metal). Wow... time flies lol.
