I've found that once I finish a single model, it motivates me to keep going. I've also found that even after years of not doing anything, it all comes right back to me, so I've stopped worrying about "getting rusty."

I am hyper critical with my painting skills and do battle with the self disappointment even when my friends complement me. It is a real struggle, I have long pauses and it does set my skill back. I don't know who coined the phrase "comparison is the death of joy" but it is real. I do help out new painters at my lgs and it is invigorating to see a newbie get so excited at the prospects and visions ahead. I have learned to be inspired and not envious of online painters now but it took a long time. I recommend cheaper minis to start with less detail to be more forgiving with skills. I have found that helps build confidence while still having room for constructive criticism. Ex ( reaper/3d prints/mantic)

I always appreciate these kind of talks. It gives perspective and sorta validates the odd feeling that you aren't alone in these kind of struggles. It just proves it's a common theme with this (or any other hobby. And, like said often enough in the video, it's ''simply'' just a 'just sit, and paint/play music/build/whatever'. Can't wait for the stars to be perfect, the moon to be full on that one day you have enough time.

I developed a big ole spreadsheet to keep me going, and I just hit 500 models painted this year. I think having some kind of accountability mechanism is a good motivator, for me at least. I think it also help to remember is any progress is progress. If you're too tired to paint precision blends, paint some boots and pouches. Anything that keeps you regularly connected to painting will reduce the friction of painting next time.

If you play as you go with a good gaming group it’s motivating. Don’t struggle in isolation.

One way to find more time is to paint while doing other things. I paint every sunday while I watch a NFL game.

You start with a "Days of Our Lives" reference? I remember watching that as a kid when I had a day off school sick, and I'm over 60! And (after a quick Google search) it finished on broadcast tv in 2022!! That show left our (New Zealand) screens decades ago.

Best advice for hobbying is just to make sure you have a small area and that the area isn't cluttered and relatively clean. I had 30 models out for 2 months painted nothing, cleaned up and painted 5 in 2 weeks l.

This touches on why GW dont sell wargaming models afterall. They do, in fact, sell 'Potential' to wargame. Everything you buy from GW is just potential waiting to happen. Gym memberships are just potential of fitness, and a guitar case with a resting guitar is just the potential of music.

Get an airbrush and put a nice zénithal on your minis. You can play them like that and it’s motivating to get the shades put on top.

When im sitting on discord chat, i usually paint. In that little time after dinner my wife and i spend some chill time apart before we go walk the dogs. - strictly old world, i have no time for other hobbies now 😂.

It’s not about not having time for me, it’s losing interest in a project and wanting to paint something different. That’s why skirmish level games are better for me. Painting 6 to 10 similar models... no problem... 100 models? Oh man.

Finish stuff regularly, limited time you might be better painting single minis that dragging through a batch. You can do a lot in 30 mins if you can get a setup where you can just start. If you feel tired and are putting it off, go sit at your hobby space (if you have one) ... more often that not you will pick up the paint brush. Be organised, so you know what you are doing when you sit down.

First thing I did was sell off my "pile of shame" I knew I was not going to REALLY want to paint. Live and learn. After thinning down the herd, I am much more focused on what I am going to do next, with an... "end" more in sight lol P.S. - Used 40K models are really easy to sell it seems

My tip to those getting into the hobby is to start with a small force of skeletons (or necrons). Basecoat, shade, drybrush. You can knock out a small army fast, and you'll get the satisfaction of having finished a project (that looks pretty good).

"You can get better REALLY fast if you apply yourself" - Dai's first nomad Gecko~ As an extension to this video topic, what about another video about how to improve yourself by establishing Hobby Nights with like-minded people ;). Primarily speaking to how people will come together for 40k/KillTeam/AoS/Spearhead "Nights" but not many people come together for weekly painting nights. Gotta perpetuate what made the group successful~ Miss you guys, see you soon~

The 'eavy metal box art style is also simple enough that you can hire someone to paint a miniature to that quality and they don't need to be an amazing and creative artist to do it.

So many truths here. At the end of the day, I think it boils down to discipline. You have to control your schedule, otherwise your schedule will control you. I've survived the path you describe. Before marriage/children, time and energy was abundant. I, survived, both? No longer married, and my daughter is grown and on her own. I've achieved "level 50" a couple of years ago and am enjoying the hobby time I have. One of my common refrains is "too many games, not enough time" and it's true. On one hand, there is a truth to not get rid of some game investments as things are circular and as a local gaming group or group of friends, we'll circle back that other game at some point. However there can be proper self-inspection that leads you to realize that even with unlimited time and energy you're not going to get back to that hobby, that game, that army, etc; and there comes a time to simplify and cut the baggage, get a return for your investment, ignore the 'sunk costs'. (I had a productive evening last night putting up at least 40 listings on eBay for games and game books) Admittedly I tend to be a marathoner, in other words, I'm much more likely to do like I did last weekend where I cleared off my dining room table and laid out 3000 points of primed/based Tyranids and started "batch painting" through various base colors. But not everyone has this freedom of time and space as you outline in your video. Something that I haven't been good at, but years ago had a friend who was, is doing things in smaller batches. I was thinking the same kind of thought as you guys discussed having a TV tray of a small hobby space. My thoughts were to have your models/paint supplies etc. organized and stored well so you can find what you need when you need it, but have a small and portable set up for being able to do "1-hour sprints" of any given hobby/painting project. Years ago my friend made/found 45-60 minutes a day, every day, to put some paint on some models. This showed, during our weekly game night at the FLGS he would have added a half squad here or a new Rhino there. Recognizable progress. Weekly. Speaking of controlling one's schedule. Despite at least a dozen partial or whole 40k armies in my collection after 20-some years, languishing at some level of built/primed/started painted...Spearhead came a long in July? and by the end of August I had found 4 AoS Start Collecting boxes in my hobby closet and after filling in some gaps I have 4 completely painted Spearheads ready to play: Blades of Khorne, Seraphon, Slaves to Darkness, and Sylvaneth. Now to harness that energy and put in the same time and effort into the over half dozen Combat Patrols that I've gotten as far as primed and based... I will always dream and wish that all my models were as beautiful as the box art. I will never be able to afford to have my armies painted by a pro commission painter. I also have no desire to 'teach' myself to get better. I need to settle for "get it painted while doing the best that I can" at the end of the day I realize that my 4 Spearheads aren't award winners, but there is no small amount of satisfaction and joy I feel every time I put them on the table for a game, knowing how much better they look vs being gray plastic or even just primed. I think the 'deadline' approach is also good. I think that is what helped my Spearhead project(s), the "get this done because of the Spearhead league at the FLGS" Even without a public deadline like that, it would be easy to assign myself projects. My girlfriend and I play Combat Patrol at least once a week, so getting my Tyranid combat patrol painted for her to use is my focus. Next I'll figure out another patrol to be my painting focus. One per month seems reasonable. Keep up the good work!

its more of a reference to the fact that most of the hobby instagram posts are all master pieces.. much like how all the people/models are all showing off their good looking bodies. It gives the impression that this is the common in reality.

I have 3 kids full time job I thought I had no time. I used to try to schedule hobby time in my garage at my desk and it rarely happened and took me 3 years to nearly finish an army but I wasn't happy with it. This past year I stopped waiting for full sessions and set up a mini setup in my laundry room and anytime id get literally a couple minutes to breathe Id go and get a micro hobby session in. Those minutes added up and Im nearly done my army and just won store champion for my local GW armies on parade. You have more time than you think! If you're motivated you can always find tiny moments here and there that accumulate
