‘Just chaos’: Aquarium in Berlin bursts, releasing huge volume of water

A giant aquarium in the German capital Berlin suddenly burst on December 16, 2022, flooding a street in the city centre. The 14-metre (46ft) fish tank, located inside a building complex, was the world's largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium. Two people were slightly injured in the incident and authorities have yet to determine what caused the tank to burst.

As an aquarist, this breaks my heart. I'm glad no humans were injured but it's extremely sad that almost all of the 1500 fish died. Ide be desperately trying to find them and put them in whatever water is left over.

I am so saddened by the loss of fish life. While fish may not seem as cuddly as a cat or dog, they have such amazing personalities and live interesting lives none the less. Many fish even are like cats and dogs with their personalities once you take moment to get to know them. Its is sad it seems none were spared. What a tragic accident.

I’m so glad no people were severely hurt, but I am so sad for all the fish! Hearing that this tank was in a hotel makes me think it was probably not maintained correctly. I hope they find the reason for the break and can hold the people responsible accountable

I'm pretty certain that no one will get charged for it as such since (likely) no individual has done anything that's illegal under German law. This water tank definitely had one (or rather several) Baugenehmigungen including previous inspections and safety evaluations, but it's notoriously hard to do a proper evaluation of something that's new and/or the biggest of its kind. The owner of the water tank will be liable for the damage caused, but that will be fully covered by insurance. What will happen definitely is that Germany will implement stricter regulations and testing procedures around these kinds of objects since German laws around buildings and similar structures are usually aimed at preventing any and all calamities - I'm not aware of any case in the last, say, 50 years where a house or bridge just suddenly collapsed throughout Germany, and they will want to make sure that this or anything like it ever happens again.

The cause is still being investigated, but it is suspected to be material fatigue. Something that is somewhat inevitable, but ideally you know how long your materials are going to safely hold and either exchange parts as needed or put the entire thing (in this case aquarium) out of commission before it fails. As @james64ibm pointed out this aquarium was kind of a "new" and "biggest" "one of a kind" thing, so there were no previous experiences and guidelines to follow. (Or there were but only for smaller scale aquariums, and nobody could know beforehand how the life expectancy when size and shape are that different, idk). Maybe someone did do calculations along the lines of "the acrylic needs to be this thick for it to have a 99% chance of safe life for soandsomany years", but they couldn't factor in what they don't know (and this aquarium was certainly unique). Or it just fell into that error margin (and we still don't know if it was the acrylic glass). It did hold up nearly 20 years. Though it makes me think 🤔 of how long this aquarium was supposed to last. "Forever" certainly wouldn't have gone through with any german safety regulations.

This was a very well maintained aqarium and I am sure they will rebuild it. It is most likely a material fatigue, as the panels were glued together, and with the weight of the water, slight shifts in soil that supports it etc, this can happen.

I recently watched a video about that tank and thought about what a disaster it would be if it failed. I'm surprised no one was killed and that the structural damage doesn't appear to be worse.

Reading through the comments, I found that it happened in the early morning and only a couple people got hurt. But look at all those debris, and those became like that only after all the water and fish carcasses was gone. It didn't look that bad only because the damage was done by water and glass panes bursting, not fire.

it was pretty cold here in Germany and many fish were said to have frozen solid but still officers etc managed to save about 30 fish. There is footage of officers carrying plastic containers with water in them and a spokesman for the berlin firefighters said the fish were being transported to both SeaLife and the Berlin Zoo. 30 out of 1500 isn't great but i'm glad that at least a few made it.

Maybe it had to do with the cold temperature/temperature difference? Berlin gets -8 degree celsius these few days, and the temperature is usually the coldest in the early morning (the glass broke around 6am in the morning).

The glass exposed to the air outside may have cooled faster than the glass inside in comtact with the warmer water, hence the glass outside contracts more which causes cracks on the surface. This weakens the structure which is now unable to support the weight of the water, causing the glass walls to yield.

It was the pressure of the water expanding due to the cold. Like how pipes burst in winter. I do believe the temperature difference was a factor in the acrylic polymer weakening, but the main cause was the pressure rising inside the tank

The height and the volume of water pressure exerted are just too great for glass or acrylic glass. Glass and acrylic glass will run down itself. Fact: Glass is considered to be a supercooled liquid because of the fact that it is an amorphous solid and similar to liquids, amorphous solids also have a tendency to flow, though the rate is very slow. This phenomenon can be observed in glass window panes of old houses where glass flows down and gets accumulated at the bottom as it flows. The volume and pressure of the water do not change but the glass did after 20 years. Poor fish 1500 of them.

Glass Is not considered a super -cooled liquid, It is a solid like rock. This myth has been debunked for a long time now. The phenomenon Of glass being thicker on the bottom and not the top was simply due to inconsistencies in the glass manufacturing process at the time. Artisans assembling windows and stained glass depictions would always put the thicker part at the bottom. Dont spread misinformation.

I was wondring how a tank could have burst considering all the up-keep and just the fact that I've never heard of a tank this scale breaking (unless privately owned) but the design makes me realize how structurally unsound this tank was. The cylindrical shape would have been fine but the elevator through the middle? Add to that a possible malfunction from the elevator (maybe causing it to overheat) and I could totally see the glass weakening enough to shatter. Shame so many fish died

No, it’s not necessarily the designers’ fault. It’s been a lot colder in Germany as of lately and the glass couldn’t handle the change in temperature. No one was prepared for this.

I don't think the designer deserves to suffer because some fish died. It's tragic, but running someone's life over an accident that could not be predicted is simply vindictive and cruel. It's only a miracle no human lives were lost. Imagine how much worse it could have been! Yet still, the designers of the tank should not suffer for it. They likely took every precaution they could, but nothing could prepair them for such a freak accident. Accidents happen, forgiveness is better than malice.
