The last video "This Is Going To Hurt... BIG Hook Up! How To Remove A Massive Fishing Hook" has gone crazy this last week! Big thanks to all that have watched and subscribed.
Thought Id better do a little follow up on one question that keeps coming up about crushing the barb as I was curious to see just how easy it would have been... Also had a quick trip out last week in the kayak and hooked up to a nice Spanish Mackerel! But that didn't quite work out...

Everything is sooo simple when you are sitting at your keyboard telling someone else what to do Rob. It's not so easy when a seriously large and heavy duty hook is through your finger. The chap with the full size bolt cutters had to put some power into cutting the hook which tells a lot about the strength of that hook. You did it the right way, ignore the keyboard warriors.

You definately chose the smartest option mate. Anyone who says "just crush the barb" needs to try and do it with a hook that big and while it's through your finger and see how they find it. Easy on a small gauge hook but like you say on a large hook without serious pliers you'll struggle. Keep up the good work mate good to see your channel growing :)

It's not that easy even on say a 1/0 carbon hook. Any doctor will tell you to cut the hook. Worse case scenario is the hook is deeply imbedded next to bone. Been there done that. Not fun.

Great tutorial, if those barbs are on bass hooks. Do not back out the hook with a semi-crushed barb of that size. You will rip and fray your extensor tendons. With that monster hook and an embedded barb, it has to be pushed through anyway before the barb can be meddled with or the hook cut off with the cutters. So definitely the best option taken by an effectively single handed solo angler on the water. Surgeon here.

Dude honestly I think you did the right thing , the right way, in the right timing. That Barb being part way out like that after you would have attempted to crush it would still mess up your inside flesh of your finger as you drew it back out through you did a great thing , smart pushing that barb through while the adrenaline was pumping. And you caught a fish(in that vid).. real fisherman. Smart fisherman...too bad about the Spanish in this vid... that was a nice looking fish...

It's one thing to be able to crush a barb in controlled conditions with the right tools...anyone can do that. But doing it on the sea, in a small craft, while in pain, with one hand ... that is a different kettle of fish, especially with a hook of that size and strength! Glad to hear you are recovering mate.

You are 100% correct in your decision. Crushing the barb and backing out would have ruined your finger. You are nice enough to take a few, i hope they were only a few, of your viewers limited knowledge of your predicament. The only thing that would have improved your situation would have been catching a king mackerel on your way in. Otherwise, you dealt with all of it like anyone should. All be it, you stood stronger than most.

You're a good human Rod. If it makes you feel better (? or worse), I did the spearo equivalent on Sunday the 20th May (same day?) with an 18kg model. had him in my hands and the flopper fell out when I grabbed the gills. Fish gave a kick and off it went.. About 10m then got nailed by a shark.. Crushed, but my dive partner railed one a few minutes later and was stoked, so not all bad.

If I'm not mistaken, those "bolt cutters" used to cut the hook were actually tile-nippers made for cutting tile or glass along a straight line which has been previously scored. Granted, they worked better than the pliers did. But, to be safe, please invest in specially hinged metal cutters that can be easily worked with one hand. You have a ton of subscribers-myself included-who are always concerned for your safety!

When I watched this one on the weekend having seen your incident in the previous video I thought to myself that I was glad I’d never done it before. Wen fishing that day and proceeded to embed a treble in my right index finger while handling a nice flathead. Thankfully only a small one that I was able to remove without too much fuss with a pair of surgical pincer clamps. Very little to show for it thankfully. Keep doing what you do mate. 👍

Cutting the hook is the best option I agree but that is also a two man job which is not going to happen on the kayak , crushing the barb is a great option but not the way you were doing it and not with those pliers . I have a set of pliers that have serations between the handle and the pivot point designed to close the eyes of ganging hooks. They are not much bigger than your pliers but give you twice as much leverage than trying to crush the barb forward of the pivot point like you were demonstrating . If I could upload a picture I could show you because it really does work , game fishing for many years and have used the trick many times. Anyway whatever works for you at the moment is what's important with the less amount of damage to the injury , glad the hands come good .🤘

I recommended the pliers I keep on my boat, the angled Klein Journeyman series diagonals. Never tested in a a hook as yours, but I have tested them on 4/0's. I know they could have blown through that hook ring to at least liberate he lure. I cut 3/0's regularly to keep from damaging the bass i release. The are carbon steel, so consider keeping them oiled in your salt environment. They are only about 8"s long too.

Nice follow up Rod. I agree that your approach was vindicated- that was a seriously tough hook and barb. As much trouble as you had only starting to flatten the barb at the work bench using your dominant hand- imagine if the hook was through your dominant hand and you had to use your other hand on the water- virtually impossible for most people with basic fishing pliers like yours (which is all I carry on the kayak).

Usually the thread holds the fish on. I just didn’t stick it through enough. The good news it hopefully that will mean the fish is still alive 👍

Clearly the people saying you could get an 8/0 hardened hook out by crushing the barb have never tried it or have an extremely high pain threshold. I got a 1/0 carbon hook stabbed deeply into my thumb well past the barb so there was no way to crush the barb or turn the hook as it was to the bone. I got it out eventually after tugging slowly for 20 minutes in a cold sweat. Barbless hooks are definitely an option but it's not just the barb but even a seemingly smooth metal seen under magnification reveals it has a very micro textured surface, more so on a big stainless steel hook.
