To add to this: stop constantly listening to or watching things „in the background“ while doing other tasks. It doesn’t matter if it’s podcasts, audiobooks, KZbin, etc. You may feel like you‘re being „more productive“ or „multitasking“ but most of the time it is just noise that clouds your mind and numbs your thoughts. Embrace the silence. Edit: To clarify, I am not saying never, ever listen to things or that it is always bad to have something on in the background. I'm just suggesting to be more mindful of your consumption and to also allow for periods of silence from time to time during which you can experience your thoughts and emotions more clearly.

is youtube not social media
@humanwiggle6 ай бұрын
@@mari-qs7wu that’s a valid question. I do think it is social media. Since it is a platform run by ad based revenue and the purpose of it is to sustain our attention on the app for as long as possible. It allows people to share a curated version of what their lives look like and who they are, but it is not always authentic or the full picture of their experience. It also has the endless scrolling feature of shorts that most other social medias have too. And it collects data on us and shares that data to create personalized ads for us based on our likes, preferences, short-comings, etc. It also has the auto play feature that keeps our attention held in spending more time on the app. I try not to watch the KZbin shorts and remain conscious of the amount of screen time I spend on KZbin. But I do keep KZbin as a learning resource for topics that I am interested in.

@@mari-qs7wu it definitely is, at least a little, but I think a lot of people have their own “definitions” of what social media is to them, you know? on my own journey to cut back screen time i deleted tik tok, reddit, twitter, etc and all my accounts but i kept YT, instagram and pinterest just because those three are all used for something important by me; entertainment, speaking to friends, or otherwise. Knowing that tiktok has especially been designed to be addictive to the max by the very efficient use of algorithms (btw, the same is true for shein & temu), and seeing what kind of effect it has on my friends, made me decide to absolutely never have it myself. I was devastated when my friend suggested me a video on yt she found interesting and she apologized it's "a bit long" and I expected it to be something like 30-60min, but it was literally 1min 30sek, was the last warning sign I needed. I'm used to watch over hour long lectures on yt as my standard, for her anything longer than a minute is exhausting. And she's very addicted to tiktok.
@imjazzlyn7 ай бұрын
One thing that held me back was the fear of not understanding my friends' conversations, not having topics to talk about, not getting the latest jokes, and overall feeling out of touch. If you're going through the same thing, don't worry. As the days, weeks, and months go by without any social media, you realize how useless they are. There comes a point where, if you were tempted to download them again, create an account, and commit to using them, you simply have no interest. They bore you, just like the first time you ever tried them. Because that's what they are-boring. The idea that "oh, if I don't have social media, I'll be left out of everything that's happening" is a lie to keep you consuming. Trends and memes are so momentary that they don't even have an impact on real life. Unless you hang out with other people who are chronically online, who can't talk about anything other than the content they consume on the internet, quitting social media won't have any negative impact
@Peachgirl-cq8sg7 ай бұрын
This… I still use social media but I use them widely different than my friends. My friends use them and stay up to date with trends, our generation, the basic stuff you see on TikTok. And because I use them differently, example to stay up to date with my hobbies, I just don’t connect with what they talk about or find myself not interested. Even with my hobbies, I do want to eventually lessen my social media use as much so I can do more physical productivity with my hobbies and less being online indulging them.

I do 100% agree with you. Most of our friends cling onto the latest updates on animes, music genres and shows that they watch on. I deleted TikTok a few days ago and man, when I tell you it changed me, it really did. In just three days I feel like a more productive and happier person. Instead of doomscrolling and watching all the horrible things happening in the world that you can’t change, you focus on your own world and you just need to get away from all that bad news. For example, I’m pro-Palestine and so many videos in my feed were about the bad things happening there, and it just came to a point that it was hurting me more than helping, as I couldn’t do anything to change the situation and it was just making me feel depressed. Deleting TikTok and twitter, you’re right it did make me feel like a kid again. I go outside more, I read more, I feel like I’m building an actual life for myself instead of watching other people live their lives and wishing that I was them. I went cold turkey and i have honestly never felt better, it might be the best thing that’s happened to me. If I hadn’t deleted it then who knows, right? This is really true ! But I think we can eliminate something else of our lifes too: watching time too often. No, seriously. When I was a child, I didn't have this consciousness of time than now. At this age, I didn't have the need to know what time is it, I just didn't care. The more we grow, the more we have obligations and the more we watch what time is it, but I surprise me to do it the weekend or at moments where I have nothing urgent to do. Thinking constantly to time is stressful for me, and prevent me to be fully lost in the things I love to do. Because when I watch time, I think on what I have to do in few hours, or tomorrow. So I think that, when we don't really have urgent things to do, we can delete watches, clocks, in addition to screens.

Where did you go??!” But now it’s all like “oh you ghosted us, you left us hanging etc” I loved your video so much because 1. You went straight to the point 2. You didn’t add anything extra like other KZbinrs 3. Super short video and super informative in just 5 MINUTES?!? wow This was the push I needed, you’re so right about scrolling being a coping mechanism, I’ve deleted all social media but I still see myself trying to find any website or something to scroll on. I’ll try what you did and I’ll update my comment in maybe 6 months!!

I tried this. It’s amazing how much you change. It made me way happier. I did go out to lunch with my friends and asked them to put their phones down, they laughed at me. They couldn’t do it. Crazy how much it does to you.

this video is so accurate, in recent months I've deleted my accounts and social media, but I still end up falling back on them or on the coping mechanisms, it's important that we realize what things are directing our lives to be aware of where we want to go and who we want to be! thank you for sharing your experience ❤

I deleted socials about 5 months ago and there’s a great difference in my daily life. I’m no longer walking down the street scrolling I actually notice things. I am present, I can watch a movie or video without simultaneously checking notifications. I genuinely feel like being on social media all day contributes to so many mental health problems because there are so many toxic people spewing their toxic mindsets online and that can be draining to constantly consume. I realize nobody really cares what you post either because I realize I wasn’t caring about what others posted either, i would forget about it in minutes. We sit there for hours and judge people based off of pixels on a screen instead of actually talking to them !! Our time here is a gift I promise you’ll never get it back so get off the damn phone and go outside. We were designed for so much more than these rectangles of glass and metal!

Fr i haven't gotten a new phone ever since it was broken and that was since last year. It's been pretty peaceful and kinda life changing without all the scrolling. I feel more relaxed and I'm not too worried about other people's lives. No more comparing. Just me being present in life. The best part about this is that i didn't expect for it to happen and take away all the access of my socials, friends, etc. Because of it i started going back doing all the things i used to love like my hobbies. Its really refreshing. I recommend

You would be amazed how much tasks, especially creative tasks, may be done without phone, computer or digital platforms at all. That's what I've been exploring and posting about lately, and there are certainly things to develop. Thanks for your video. Also, being alone with own thoughts is often sooo useful!

@@sivyh I feel like I have a pretty healthy balance, I didn’t start KZbin til about middle school and I only used my iPod to make voice memos, play games and write little stories in notes. Even that got addicting I’ll admit. But as a kid I wasn’t allowed on the internet, and now I’m thankful for that because now I know how to manage my time on the platform more. (Better than most people I know, who feel like they can’t put it down for even a second. It’s sad.

I’ve noticed a change in my personality, I go through highs and lows. Recently I’ve felt increasingly anxious and depressed, my marriage hasn’t been going well and their a influencer that recently got engaged and I’m finding my self comparing my relationship to hers and feeling really deflated, not realising every relationship isn’t person. I’m also find I’m becoming very judgmental, passive aggressive with other social media users. I can feel a decline in my mental health and I have made a decision to delete TikTok, instagram sign out of my normal KZbin account. I believe this will help my mental health and allow me to be more productive and productive. Instead of running to social media why not read a book or go for a job/walk. It will be challenging but I think ill be ok.

I took this advice last year. Found out pretty quickly that you lose a ton of friends when you do this. Sure, some folks will still catch up periodically, and you can reach out to people if you make time, but you’re severely limiting your social interactions with people who you do not see reguarally. Just be aware of that risk before you do it, especially if you have a lot of friends who don’t live/work in the same place you do.

I feel so silly admitting a small device had such an impact on me- but it left a cave in my heart I'm trying to mend right now. When I was younger, I felt inadequate and insecure about myself. I found solace in scrolling through social media, seeking validation and connection. However, looking back, I realize that this habit only fueled my insecurities and prevented me from truly improving. I used social media as a coping mechanism to fill a void and as a form of self-harm. This behavior became a long-standing habit, lasting for nine years, where I spent most of my time scrolling and playing games. Eventually, this led to a period of depression lasting eight months during my freshman year of high school when I realized I needed to start living my life. The impact of this habit on my mental health was significant. I'm a junior in high school. I'm struggling still. Whenever I put my phone down I feel overwhelmed by the amount of doors that open for me.

Best thing I ever did was get rid of ALL social media and the smartphone back in 2016. Wasn't easy at first but now I do not miss it at all and I enjoy doing other things so much more like being outside when the weather is good and spending time with my dogs. I am also limiting myself to a maximum of 1 hour per day of internet use at my desktop..

I’m 28 and I haven’t been on social media for 9 years. The feeling of just opting out of something so negative is just great. Being on the outside looking in at my brothers and friends makes me kind of sad for them. However I DO have to have them explain a joke sometimes because I’m out of the loop

I´v been doing this for months. And I can recognized how much it chaged my life, I've gone out more, I have read much more, draw again, tried to talk more with people around me, helping people and helping myself out. It's been a hard step, but I've realize how harmful and unhealthy it was for me, and how I hurt the people I loved that way, by being away in such trivial thing. Now, I am trying to do things that I've always wanted to do, and learn better habits to live a healthier life, trying to do things I didn't put much effort into. Such like writing a book.

I’ve been in and out of social media for a year, with some periods of relapsing and in general, my happiness increases when I’m away of them. But you have expressed it very well: it’s a mental battle. In periods of boredom and loneliness social media is the easiest path to overcome bad feelings for a while. But those keep feeding your unsatisfaction, pushing lavish and unrealistic lifestyles in the algorithms. It’s definitely a weird cycle. You have summarized this feeling very well and I really enjoyed the video. Cheers :)

I've quit and relapsed several times in the past. A few months ago I got off Facebook, Instagram and Twitter completely, and so far I've stayed off them. I think the trick was it was a logical decision rather than an emotional one. In the past I've quit because I was angry or depressed, and always ended up back on within a few days... This time I just felt like it had outlived its utility in my life, so I quietly dropped off it and did something else instead. This is now the longest I've been away from social media since about 2012, and I honestly don't miss it at all. In fact it completely slipped my mind for several weeks. It was just like when you quit a boring job. There's no ill feeling, no pangs of regret, you just move on and forget about it.

For some time, I felt like I was living in a world that was completely separate from reality, almost like a metaverse. Even though I wanted to leave that world and knew it was wrong, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I only made things worse. Similar to how we often see effortless accomplishments on social media and think we can do the same, the real world is much more challenging.

I recently turned 20 and while I still have a lot of adulthood left to experience, it already feels like so much has changed since I was a teenager. I don’t get joy out of being on my phone anymore, I miss having hobbies and feeling like I’m enjoying the present. Social media is just this toxic, energy draining presence in my life and videos like this are what keep me going with my goal to essentially quit my phone. Even when I don’t have energy for anything else but mindless scrolling, I’m trying to remind myself that the less I’m on it the closer I’ll get to that childlike wonder that I thought I lost

I’ve resorted to mostly an analog way of life nowadays. Been getting in touched with nature for the past 4 years more than ever, switched over to film photography entirely, abandoned pretty much all of my socials, I started reading books a lot more too. If I wanted to contact someone I’d rather write an email or a letter to them to show that there is a transcript and intent that I actually want to communicate with them. I’ve been in a much slower and tactile environment than it makes you really think about the things that we do. Social media is all trends and most of the trends are stale. And those who chase trends after trends are harming their personalities in the long run.

Sorry you’re going through this. I wish someone told me when I was your age that going through the ups and downs is literally a part of life and it happens for the rest of your life. Learning to be resilient and managing and coping is the best way to manage it. It’s hard, but understanding that through every trial, you are learning and growing and trying to appreciate all parts of life make it easier. Lots of love to you, you’re amazing! ❤️

This is so relatable, when you try to avoid phone or quiet phone or social media. First thing happened to me was I became restless, what to do now? What to do immediately what will feel good? Man, lots of thoughts pop ups in the head. What to do with my life? What do I really want from my life? When the dopamine goes below baseline, your thoughts process also goes down, there comes a point when there is a downfall. Believe me, going outta, chit chatting with friends and family is much more rewarding than this mindless phone usage. It won't be easy, one will feel restless n confusing. I am wondering what will happened to people who are full time into phone. Danngg
