This takes us back to the introduction of Bluray, when a 2nd format war was going on between two rival High Definition disc formats: Blu-ray and HD DVD. The mention of PS3 in the video gives you a real flash back. This was taken from the start of the Bluray movie Tombstone.
Get Tombstone for $6 on Amazon and demo this trailer on your Blu-ray player:

Blu Ray was the first format I started collecting hardcore. It was a format where you had the best audio and video that’s something that’s worth collecting and Blu Ray still holds up today even with 4K Blu Ray. To me it was awesome I could finally watch my favourite shows or movies in great quality and not have to worry about compromises in quality or audio like it was with VHS and DVD.

OH wow I either didn't realized or more than likely totally forgot that this version of the promo existed, since I'm more used to the Dark Knight's the Joker/matrix version.

I love how “of their time” these things are. I legit used to “collect” my favourite DVD and Blu-ray promos just like this on my tapes and DVDs as a kid 😆 I especially liked how similar the USPs were in the first years of a format, when they have to do their best to convince you to grab a $500-800 box. After that they get a bit more casual and infomercial-y.

Random thought ran through my head, and I thought I’d run it by you since you dissect a lot of unusual VCRs. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “pressurized VCR”, and what do you think of the idea? Even though there’s basically no point to it in today’s age, I kinda want to experiment with unusual VCR concepts.

A VCR which uses columns of differential air pressure to spool itself, just like those IBM and HP computer tape drives of the 60s and 70s did. They were notoriously finicky AND loud, which will be why home VCRs just used little metal arms :p

@@kaitlyn__L I was thinking more like an environmentally sealed VCR with hoses attached, so that it can maintain an internal atmosphere with regulated temperature and humidity.

Yes, especially before streaming services took over and their ability to yank content away that people enjoy.

I've never went to blu ray. Too much DRM. DVD you put it in the machine and it plays. When I first heard of blu ray I've read that a player needs to be connected to the internet and the movie "calls home". This is what turned me off because I just want to watch a movie. Unless I'm missing something here.

pretty sure the internet added extras but was never needed

The truth is somewhere in between. For most discs the experience is just like a DVD - the player uses its own decryption keys to play the media from the disc. After a few years post-DVD release home computers could brute force the encryption without even having a leaked key. So the industry demanded they be able to update the encryption keys and difficulty. That’s the part you read about. Basically if the player tries to play a disc and it doesn’t work, that’s when it connects to the internet to learn about the new scheme. In practice this occurs every few years or so. I believe there’s technically some way to distribute the updates on a disc or maybe a USB stick, but I don’t know how common that is/was. They do sell some modern players which lack connectivity though. But for playing any DVD, or any Blu-ray you’ve played before or which is older than ones you’ve played before, the player shouldn’t “phone home” about anything. (Barring various “help us improve our services” settings but I’m assuming you turn them all off!)

@@kaitlyn__L I have a usb blu ray drive that works with my pc. I would assume though if blu rays required that update feature it just wouldn't play blu rays though? in fairness I found only cyberlink had the codecs to read the disks though when I tried it....

@@OMGg4m3r on a PC, the Blu-ray playback software provides the decryption. That’s exactly why you used to need WinDVD etc back in the day too.

Funny how this video hypes the quality of Blu-Ray up and yet its encoding is so lossy and old now the quality of it is just complete garbage compared to any modern BD release
