BYD passed Tesla for a while as the biggest EV producer, but the management was unhappy because the hybrids were selling too well. What I didn't realise was that they had already a plan B to beat Toyota in hybrids. So it was not a surprise that BYD became the king of the hybrids. My old neighbor who works for Toyota S4 store in Guangzhou told me several years ago that the batteries are the weak part, they fail before 100000km or right after the warranty runs out due to overheating. People don't know they are getting bad unless the capacity is tested. Maybe that's why Toyota is losing so much sales in China that they have cut production by 20-40% depending on the model.
