Just how BAD can installing a baffle in your slip on exhaust REALLY be?!

We've covered the performance affects of exhaust baffles for other engine designs and applications previously in older videos, but we've never shared just how BADLY they can impact a high performance inline-4 motorcycle engine.

Oh shit. I'm so glad I found this video before I did the exact same thing. It's a ZX4RR, but I noticed pretty quick that my baffle wrapped in ceramic wool was making it stuttery and I eventually stalled just casually doing tight turns in first gear. I guess I'm destined to have a loud bike

Great info got me worried about my cat melting on track days tho, bikes flashed by SuperBikeUnlimited (someone told me they are really bad please confirm) I don’t have a baffle but a shorty two brothers exhaust

I have zx4rr rn with a slip on and a baffle that looks like that. But it has a whole in the middle to let Gas flow. I don't take it to the track and will get the ecu flashed next riding season. So will the bike be good if I have ecu tune with better air filter and slip on with a baffle if I only use it on the streets?

What about changing from one slip on to another? 2016 R1 with ? wideband O2 sensor and ? active tune. Yes, you flashed it. Slip on was changed (post tuning) to a longer one to reduce sound levels on track. I was thinking the active tune would correct as needed and it would be fine... but no I am wondering. (stock head pipes with aftermarket tail section) track only bike. and btw great educational video, thanks.

Good questions! Most CP4 slip ons remove the catalytic converter, and the Active Tune will adjust fueling as necessary with our fuel mapping and targets flashed into the ECU.

With the increasing track sound level restrictions, we need to move away from the trend of shorty end cans. Put a proper length silencer on there and you won't need to run a baffle to pass sound checks. Long cans will typically help smooth power curves as well.

This would apply for any engine. If the exhaust can’t get out, then the engine can’t suck in more air and fuel.

okay question I bought a used R6 with a K O light ning slip on exhaust. I removed the baffle went to start the bike and now the bike won't idle she just dies out. Is this because it's tuned to run with the baffle? it has a two brothers fuel tuner box on it if that has anything to do with any of it anyhow not sure about it all hard to find any definitive answers.

I thought baffles were good for backpressure. This is good to know! Also was surprised that baffle only had holes on the sides and no directly facing where the exhaust emits from

it’s meant to push the sound waves to the side and muffle the sound. It does it for air and pressure as well, causing the whole exhaust to be restricted. You need to have a solid flow of gases when having an exhaust installed. Cheap welds and bends, aswell as a whole baffle is obviously going to affect the way the air moves.

Quick Question, So if I have you guys Flash on my 2016 ZX10R with a Stock Header, and Yoshi 3/4 Alpha no baffle. I go to a track day with noise testing, and they tell me I need a baffle or I can't ride, will using the Yoshi baffle be as big a deal on a bike with no Cat or? This noise testing for track days is becoming the norm up here in Canada.

Wtf 😳. My bike has a m4 slip on with a baffle that I put in 🤦🏻‍♂️. But I’m pretty sure that the cats were already toasted… I pulled material out of it. And your right my shit sound …. “Raw”. But my power feels great and with the baffle in I don’t mind how it sounds… I’m curious if I’m loosing power tho… I’ve got my first ever track day in two weeks… do I take the baffle out??? Or since my cats are already hollowed out am I ok? Would there be any situation where taking the baffle out would be bad? I’d absolutely love to do a full arka exaust and send you my ecu like I did on my mt07. I’m so stupid happy with your tune. Only thing is cost effectiveness…. Honestly I love my bike the way it is and it’s as fast as I can imagine a 636 ever being…

If the customer needed the bike to be quieter, they should've just left the std system in place and had a flash for that. Oddly race supersports bikes have longer silencers, not a stumpy little can that exits below your ears.....there must be a reason why they do that ! Like your straight, no nonsense approach 👍

Couldn't this guy have avoided this if he got one of those exhaust back pressure testers? The back pressure must have exceeded 2psi and he would have known to drill a hole in the baffle, is this not true? I don't think a lot of people know about a gauge that cost about $30 on Amazon that allows you to monitor your cat at certain intervals and make shure your exhauat back pressure psi is always between 1 and 2 psi.😮

You´re trying to tell me that after visits to the dealer and the track nobody noticed that the DB killer was in? Nobody knew that a high performance/revving, 4-cylinder engine needs a free-flowing exhaust? The owner is surrounded by morons unfortunately.

Right? Even any of my non-riding, old lady friends in church or family would've suggested me to pull out the dB killer if I mentioned my bike was running bad and they visually inspected it out of helpful curiosity and saw it inside the exhaust. Even if they didn't actually see it, they would've concluded it was the culprit out of assumption if they asked me questions about the bike. It's like a common sense thing anyone would suspect when brainstorming withour knowledge of the subject.
