Just lining my fuel tank becomes a Saga! - Project Bike Build -Part 68

Needing to line my fuel tank takes MUCH longer than expected and was far more complex than I planned.

More than once that un-emptiable tank saved me when I'd run out of fuel. Laying the bike on one side got me another 3 miles and on one occasion taking the tank off and fully flipping it took me through to a pay packet on Friday afternoon. The flip side of that is that the water will collect in the "unuseable" spaces and cause a corrosion problem in the long run

Cold weather Ryan ,you could try a hair dryer on the outside of tank 👍

Thanks Derek. I think the cool weather wasn't helping. But I have now worked out why it wasn't drying. Watch this space.

For fitting motorcycle gaskets I use Wellseal. Keeps the gasket in place and easily allows you to re-fit the engine cover

you need to have more heat in there.....been in your temperature condition many times , you have to stay warm and so does the work shop.......after many years ive bought a potable diesel heater....bit of fafing around to set up right.......but its well worth it . things wont dry correctly....until summer i think you will find .

I am sure that would help, if I had enough space for it. But i will certainly consider this as soon as i can.

When you took the petcock off and still couldn't get the fuel out i was screaming at the video " there's a filter in there " 😅. Anyway you eventually discovered it. I've not lined a tank, but did clean out with evaporust product which worked well, but had to make sure it was really dry after rinsing out and that took some time and effort. Did that kit solution get all the water out? Also agree with others that probably cold weather does not help the drying. Hope you get it sorted!

maybe its the time of the year if the shed was warmer it may dry quicker, just a thought, pity they don't design a bag type sealer that contours the tank but maybe in the future, well done to get so far. Mal

Hi Ryan. I've done a couple of tanks and the resin is usually touch dry/ hard to the touch after about 12 hours. Having said that the liners I've put in were done in the summer. I cant say if that makes a difference but maybe its the cold garage? I do know it's Seven days before you can put fuel in it.

It looks like that tank suffers from the same design flaw as my GS550L - the right hand side of the tank can never be fully emptied in normal use because the fuel tap only feeds from the left, leaving a couple of litres of capacity you can never use.

Hi, i think it relies on being ridden causing fuel to splash between sides. But does seem a strange design to me.

@@RyansGarageUK Mine has a gauge, instead of a reserve position, which would be ok if it was accurate. Unfortunately, shortly after I bought it, it ran out while it was showing 1/4 of a tank. Switching to reserve consisted of leaning the bike as far to the left as possible to transfer enough fuel to get to a garage. Won't make that mistake again.

Hi Ryan just a quick question Do you know how far jet screws are screwed out on the two carbs Can’t seem to find how many turns out they need to be? Many thanks!

Hi, I'm sorry did see this sooner. I understand that it's 2 turns for the 250cc and 1.5 turns for the 400cc models.
