Essa música composto por Don McLean em homenagem "Ao dia em que a música morreu" 03/02/1959 em um acidente que matou Ritchie Valens (17 anos), Buddy Holly (22 anos), e Big Bopper (28 anos), jovens astros do rock que estavam em grande ascenção na época.

It was a monster hit; people ran to the dance floor when it came on. I was a poor American college student. I was studying Spanish, and I had just scraped together enough money for a summer trip to Spain. The song was American; the song was Spanish; it chronicled a loss of innocence. Perfect.
