@@charliesouthgate6125 Yeah, I admit here a year later what I wrote sounds a bit fan-boyish. But this song... it's a part of me. It describes the turmoil my country endured through my formative years. And actually, there's a much more personal reason why I love American Pie. When I was a child through the 60's my mother always sang me a song at bedtime. So when I had a daughter in the 90's & 00's I would bring my guitar into her bedroom every night and we'd sing a bedtime song of her choice together. I usually brought in a 3-ring binder of songs I had printed. And her favorite bedtime song was.... you guessed it. American Pie! I sang this song hundreds of times for my daughter at bedtime. When she was very young it was adorable when she'd make the sign of the cross when it got to The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost. Too cute for words. Now lest you think my daughter was a much deeper thinker than a regular 6 year old would be I should point out that the actual reason she chose American Pie more than any other song was because it was the LONGEST SONG in my 3 ring binder. And children have their priorities at bedtime. "Read me the long one Daddy" :) Nonetheless, to me American Pie is a masterpiece. And listening to and seeing interviews with Don McLean I can tell that he and I are, to a large degree, cultural birds of a feather. I respect him and I understand what loss he was lamenting in American Pie. I have two older brothers who were about Don's age, and I got to understand the sock hop era through them. The other day I got a text message out of the blue from my now 28 year old daughter who said "GUESS WHAT SONG IS ON THE RADIO?!?!?!" Shared memories.... they're the best!

I’m a boomer and this song is without a doubt one of the best songs ever written if not the best of our generation. It always brings back a memory from being 15 years old when this song was new and playing on the radio. My family and others were on a camping trip and only one of us boys were old enough to have a drivers license and so him and us other two were boys were asked to drive back into town for additional supplies (Times have changed) As we were cruising at what I remember to be about the legal speed limit American pie came on the radio and that’s when it happened. The three of us started singing along to the song at the top of our lungs when the driver realized he had been pushing down on the accelerator the whole time as we were singing and realized we were then cruising along at about 95 mph on a two lane country highway marked at 55 mph! Fortunately nothing bad happened as we slowed down and continued on but I still have that exhilarating memory of my youth, ah to be young again.
