Hey, I'm a cosmetic chemist and it sounds to me like you've developed a sensitivity to Carnauba Wax which is very common in eyeshadows, eyeliner, and mascara. It makes up 75% of a lot of mascara formulations. Carnauba Wax (also called Copernicia Cerifera) helps thicken products, adds volume, flexibility, and keeps shadows from sheering out. It could be another component but the fact that you can't tolerate other mascaras but can tolerate Besame, which as a cake mascara doesn't need Carnauba Wax, makes me think it is the culprit. It can also clog the oil ducts around your eyelids and give you dry eyes. Sadly, all the lovely shimmer shades are probably also causing irritation either because they contain something you are reacting to or their crystalline structure is agitating your already sensitive skin. Sadly, sensitisations can just happen out of nowhere even with safe and low allergin ingredients. I would check the ingredients lists on products you know cause a reaction and see if there are any common denominators to avoid. But whatever you do, don't keep applying products that cause irritation. It can get worse over time or cause larger histamine responses because your body thinks it's under attack and freaks out. Make sure your eye area is hydrated and apply a non-reactive priming product to help make a barrier. Be really careful about removing your eye makeup gently and avoiding getting it in your eye. If you use something and get a response take a Benadryl and see if it improves. At least that way you will know if you are just dealing with irrigation or a histamine response. If it continues visit your dermatologist, they can do testing to help narrow down the problem.

Very helpful information. Thank you. I find that I have problems with foundations. I will try comparing ingredients and see what the common denominator is. I have noticed that I seem to have less problems with Aveda products. Thanks again for contributing!🦋

Bianca, I feel your pain, literally. A few years ago, out of the blue, I had a terrible skin reaction on my face. I traced back my reaction to an expired eyeshadow. Who knew?!? Apparently the reaction triggered other allergies. Even after eradicating the offending eyeshadow, I still continued to randomly have reactions. I ended up having to have a patch test at my dermatologist to determine the ingredients that were giving me issues. That’s something I would recommend so you can stay away from products that are irritating to you. It’s super annoying to have to read the ingredient lists all the time, but much less painful! I hope you are not allergic to as many things as I ended up being!

"It's just another canvas to play with," I like that. I sort of treat my very greying hair like that, I'm not dyeing to hide the greys (I earned those bastards!), but I rather like the look of having a few streaks of either unlikely (black or white blonde) or not found in nature (usually blue and purple) just to make things more interesting! And I always like leaving one section that I never dye just so I know what colour my hair actually IS, and since I usually wear my hair braided, I try to position the streaks so that some of the colour shows in the braid tail. I totally love all the shimmer and irridescent and colourchangey stuff, if I could only get that in my hair.... I suppose if I could be arsed to wear makeup, I'd totally go for some of these, but I generally get by with one or two colours of eyeshadow, a few lip colours, some stage makeup for answering the door at Halloween, and a black eyeliner for Alice Cooper concerts. I think I wore mascara once since my wedding 12 years ago... daily scrub with a wet facecloth and liberal application of SPF 50+ sunblock is my thing... removing makeup was always such a disaster for me... although I did discover that the Body Shop's chamomile eye makeup remover is great for removing blood stains from fabric...

Yes the expiry dates are beyond ridiculous...perfume for instance, your nose tells you if it has turned bad but floral essences in alcohol are not going to go off despite the manufacturer wanting us to believe they do! I keep my eyeshadow for a long time and, if you are really woried about microbes you can sterilize it by repottinng it with some isopropyl alcohol. Which again, doesnt go off readily. I think you make great videos, your dry sense of humour really lends to the topics you speak about and I enjoy every one. Thats not something I can say for many other channels, I appreciate hearing an American using English properly (no Ts on the end of 'across' here!) and you always have interesting little side topics too...Love it Bianca, youre my absolute favourite Vintage channel...well along with Rachael Maksy and Bernadette Banner both of whom have similar, content but very different, but equally likeable personalities (Although I would love to do what Bernadette Banner does I think my oafishness precludes me from her kind of project! not that I am saying yours and Rachels are more geared to the oaf) Its good that most vintage looks dont go heavy on the eyeshadow if it hurts you. You really need to research a good hypoallergenic mascara (and in this case stick stringently to the Use By dates in order to be able to keep using mascara.) and see how you get along with that, I would go for a pretty simple one because the less chemicals, the better.

If you want to incorporate falsies back into your eye look - I might know something that can work! I found these false eyelashes at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago and they are great. They don't take any glue or liner. It is a false eyelash top and also a false eyelash bottom - and both have magnets on them. So you sit the top lashes above your lash line where you want them to go and then you take the bottom lashes and put them underneath your top lashes - positioning them so that the magnets stick together. I have sensitive eyes too and these don't seem to bother me (bc it really is the glue that I have a hard time with). I haven't tried wearing them out in public for long periods of time, but they might work well for your videos or photos. I tried to find the exact name of the ones I have but I don't remember. Instead, I found a different brand with a similar concept online so you can at least check it out to see what I mean. One is called Three Second Lash and another is called Magnetic Lash by Kiss model number 76667 KEML04. It's been awhile since posted this video, but I am hoping that your sensitivity has started to improve!

I thoroughly enjoy your whole vibe. Allergy to false lashes, try the magnetic lashes. Some work with an eyeliner and you want to avoid those but there are brands that do a magnetic sandwich with falsies. You can still enjoy big, fluffy eyelash looks without having to deal with the allergy!

However, I have found that I can wear matte shadows without problems. It's just the fund metallic colors that cause issues. I still wear metallics but not usually two days in a row and I'm careful with not leaving it on too long and in how I remove it. It does stink to love doing makeup and having to deal with changes. Hi, I feel your pain. I have it too, so I'm going to share the one that works for me, maybe it's interesting to you maybe it's not, but I'll find it remiss of me if I don't. I'm supersensitive with allergies and one thing I shouldn't do with allergies is to go natural makeup. The mast cell histamine reaction is caused by proteins so no proteins in my eye makeup, or to be avoided in any makeup, really. The one mascara that works for me is Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof. The waterproof part is essential. I'm like you have thrown out a bunch of expensive ones, and you know that sometimes brands give you a small mascara as a gift. I just can't wear them. Luckily I have a sister... For other eye makeup, I found that I tolerate gel eyeshadows better than dry so if I need something that will stay on for a while I have Laura Mercier Caviar and Lancôme fat pencil shaped gels. I even have some Linda Hallberg Flash Crayon that works okay. For eyeliner the waterproof Sephora one works, believe it or not. The thing they have in common is that they are all waterproof. For Foundation I can use bareMineral's powder foundation and have used it since it was introduced. I know that you will get a lot of suggestions on things that might work so take this as it's given. Try it or not, now at least I know that told you my good ones. Yours, Ann P.S. I also carry antihistamine eye drops and even Clarityn (?) (antihistamine tablets) if I wear the colors out. D.S. P.P.S Lip brush could be good? D.S.

I wear nothing but cake mascara for the same reason! Out of nowhere I started to have a reaction where my eyelash follicles would swell and hurt. It would take days for the swelling to go down. Fortunately for me, I love cake mascara even better, so there’s my silver lining. I sometimes think it is a combo of fewer ingredients, water solubility, and having to clean your brush after every use. I even use mine as eyeliner now so that I don’t have issues anymore. There are people on Etsy that make different color cake mascara than just brown and black. As a redhead, plum is my favorite. 🥰.

Oh, so sorry to hear that! Im bit older and very allergic to fish and other seafood and in 80's and even in 90's most blue/green/sparkly eyeshadows had such "fishy" things in them to make that glitter that I could not wear them, only brand I could ever wear was japanese Kanebo that had silk in their colors. So all this made that I was 20 when I first tried to wear daily some mascara but could not, and today I am 51 years and look more like real "re-enactor" cause no other make up, just my red lipstick like in that profilepic there 🙂 You look so beautiful and I like these tutorials soooo much. I love make up on others even though I never can use it myself ❤

This is super fun, thank you! You got me tuned in to JD Glow a while back, and I love their colors so much. Looking forward to trying some of these others as well.

Having the doe foot come off an applicator is maddening, but that lipstick is gorgeous! I ended up buying a pack of disposable doe foot applicator several years ago for a different application, but they do exist! (You can of course clean them too, and just keep with your other brushes.) I think I got mine on Amazon. Right now my favorite eyeshadow palette is actually Urban Decay’s Ultraviolet, from their Naked line. I’d been lusting after it, and then a dear friend got it for me for Christmas in 2020. Ever since it’s been practically the only palette I use on the very few occasions I actually go out or have a reason to dress up these days.

I love eyeshadows. I'm getting more and more into indie shadows now. I have some JD glow, looxi, pretties for your face, devinah. I havent tried many other small indie brands yet but i plan to. I also have a couple of beauty bay palettes including nikki tutorials collab. I would love to hear more about eyeshadows from you.

Hmmm. Turns out I have makeup anger! Who knew? I used to love doing makeup but with all the masking it is hardly worth it! However, it does look great and is very interesting but I will need to wait for spring. Beautiful palettes though! Especially those jungle ones and the other " age of ....? Have a great week! I could however bead a bug ...best wishes from above zero, melting the f. snow Canada, Joanne

For eyeliner, I just wet a liner brush with water and use black eyeshadow to draw on my wings. I have a problem with eye sensitivity with my eyes and makeup too and that seems to be fine for me.

I haven't worn any eye makeup since 1993. I went from having normal eyes and a matter of one year to severe dry eyes. And when you have dry eyes you can't handle any chemicals around the eyes. Like you I like to wear it but no longer can. The only thing that goes in or around my eyes these days is ointments and artificial tears. Thanks for another great video. Your makeup looks fabulous!

Thank you for sharing your makeup favorites and recommendations with us! I have three new tabs open now just for eyeshadow... Multichrome is pretty much my favorite thing, and I feel about purple the way you feel about green, so I foresee some splurging in my future ^_^ I'm also sorry to hear about your eye sensitivity issues, but I'm relieved to know that you've been able to find a few products that don't cause you problems.

Ah, this was so beautiful and fun! Thank you! 😍 I have layered highlighters over darker eye shadow in an effort to achieve a similar effect, but sadly it's just not as stunning.

Thank you! Depends on the highlighter in question I suppose!

I don't know if you've had an allergy panel done, but I had a similar thing happen to me, and it turned out to be an acrylate allergy. Acrylates are basically liquid plastics and are in most mascaras, liquid eyeliner, etc. Now I just look for acrylatefree eye makeup, and it all good.

Not sure if you would like it since they are loose pigments and all of yours seem pressed, but my favourite brand is MyPrettyZombie cosmetics! Seriously beautiful duochrome/multichrome powders and pretty great prices for how much you get. If you have never checked them out and don't mind that they're loose I highly recommend! I'll definitely be checking out some of these brands.

I am the same as you with eye makeup, over time and experimentation i have found that I can only wear tubing mascara and cream shadows,(they dont seem to migrate into my eyes the same way) that are very clean. My favorite brand is Ritual de Fille, they are amazing.

As in Art, there are no rules. Creative is just that. I don’t wear makeup anymore but I do like all your shimmer shadows. I thought of you the other day as we passed The Brass Armadillo. Have you been in? The Hubs and I had a 20th anniversary road trip that mirrored you B-day trip. We started in Central CA...well I started in S OR. We went to the Stanley, where the pipes froze and construction woke us 😂. We went up one way and back the other, staying a night in Vegas at The El Cortez. It was much needed time together. 🌈🌈🦋🦋

I used to wear liquid mascara when I modeled for a friends black & white photography. I also had the same searing pain when I wore it. Oddly enough it turned out that I was allergic to a chemical they use in almost all of them that keeps it from clumping. That might be the problem and definitely something to look into.

I recommend reading the ingrediant lists of the products that irritate you and see if you can find the common denominator. And know that hypoallergenic makeup does exist! For example, if the lash glue you used to use contained formaldehyde, maybe that was the problem? I've heard of it happening before.

Oh my actual God!? Yessssss this is exactly what I need tonight. Never clicked so fast!! I bought some Terra Moons in the Black Friday sale. They were expensive as I had to pay postage to the UK but I just said to myself, ' Ah fuck it!?' I haven't properly played with them yet but you have inspired me!

(you probably already know this, but if not) if you ever want to sanitise your pressed powders, getting some 99% alcohol (ethanol, ideally, one "good" thing that came out of the plague is no one blinks an eye when you look at the alcohol content) and soaking it in there and letting it evaporate out does the trick the above is also how you fix the ones that get broken from being dropped

I adore you and your channel. Thank you for teaching me so much about the chrome shadows. Not that I think you need them, but I wonder if you've tried magnetic false eyelashes. They work without glue and might help your eyes if you want that really big lash look.
