“Brown girls would never behave and stand against their mom” another point against that statement is that she grew up in America so obviously she’s had western influence growing up for like her whole life so that’s how I understood why her attitude was like that

The show was alright. We stan representation but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it wasn’t the greatest. Devi was unbearable for half the season. I liked her character development but it was hard getting through those first few episodes. And it was very cringy at times so I legit had to skip through some parts. I was more interested in her cousin and her friend’s storylines tbh.

Well i think devi being stupid is what made a show good for me . It was more realistic cuz you can see your mistakes in her actions. I kinda liked how they didn't shit on arranged marriage tho. I'm not 100% for it, but it's nice to see something positive about it -- how it can sometimes actually work out. Kamala and her bf didn't really have the same goals; they didn't feel like a team. I did like her bf too, but I liked the vibe she had with the new dude and how she felt like she could be herself
@batiasegal3117
@batiasegal3117 4 жыл бұрын
I liked that she decided to give the new guy a shot. It's like the total opposite of what happens in every other show that involves this kind of plot (I watch too many kdramas) where the family disagrees but she goes with the first guy she fell in love with anyway. You see, she didn't do that to please her parents, she did it because she really didn't think she could marry Steve. The relationship just didn't click to her. She saw she had connected with the new guy so instead of lying to Steve and cheating on him, she did the right thing and broke up with Steve. She didn't just go with the other guy just because he was handsome, she did so because she connected with him. I really like the fact that this show didn't do what most shows do.

As someone who's not South Asian, but an immigrant daughter, I thought the show was okay. It still had all the same "teenage girl on television" aspects where getting to touch a guy's chest is the greatest moment of your life, like girl, get some self esteem. It's 2020, and I'm so over that narrative. I do agree that her character was definitely on the wild side, but she was in her sophomore year of high school (14/15), so I'd say it's actually quite accurate for American teenagers. I'm just surprised no one (moreso her therapist!) never talked about her obvious anger management issues and her complete inability to take responsibility for any of her actions. And it's weird how no other South Asian kids were shown at her highschool? Even as friends or acquaintances? I also hated how her cousin broke up with her boyfriend....but ok Netflix.

Honestly i loved a brown girl as a lead and how the show tried to break some typical “indian American” stereotypes but I genuinely thought to some extent they reinforced the stereotypes? Like for example in most shows the indian american or indian in general is smart and usually not very popular which is sort of what devi is. Also i understand that to and american, Indian culture might seem restricting but it really isnt always like that. Idk i think this season they focused of how devi really doesn’t want to move back to india etc and in way she isnt really accepting her culture. Another point about arranged marriage, its quite appropriate how they portrayed it but again it made india seem all about arranged marriage ik as an Indian its a huge part of the culture but so many Indians arent in an arranged marriage much like my family so i think what im to trying to say is its a good show but in this season it almost reinforces the typical indian stereotypes. Anyway just my opinion Sorry for the rant please dont attack me

There was this Canadian show called ‘how to be indie’ starring Melinda Shankar which shows the first generation immigrant experience. I don’t recall how accurate it was tbh but we did have that. And that was kind of the first thing I saw where I felt represented. Although I am Indo-Guyanese and Melinda Shankar is also Indo-Guyanese. But it was SUPER cringe.

Tbh I love it when the culture is incorporated into the storyline. Having a main character that you want to see representation is useless unless culture aspects can also be introduced. Just changing the race of a character just seems to be fake in a way. Like having ariel be black. For what purpose. Its like they are trying too hard to just focus on skin color, you know they thought about it a lot. A good example is Tiana, showcasing cultures most people would never have seen just shows so much more respect and love for it-since everything has to be just right.

Why does a non white person have to always have 'culture' attached. Are they not allowed to have stories as humans, like white people are able too. I don't get your point, you're alluding to the fact that non white stories are only palatable if heaps of culture is attached. Maybe the story is just about a girl and her life, and she so just happens to be brown?

But did you forget the fact that this show is also representing reality? Like there's no doubt that that's an inappropriate thing to talk about on the screen but at the end of the day, it's the truth that brown people talk about stuff like this as a bad thing, and that's all Mindy Kaling is showcasing.
