Thanks for taking us along for the trip. Seemed to be an awfully bright day which not only makes it a bit tougher, but also keeps us a bit more uncomfortable as we look for trees near the water to hide ourselves in and under for shade. I completely understand, agree with, and literally feel your Spider-Man reference lol. Thanks again Davie!

Davie, out of curiosity, from the top of your leader to your top dropper, what is the length roughly? Is it a full length leader with droppers tied to tippet to save the leader, or do you cut the leader and reattach using blood knots tying the flies on down the length of the leader during that process? Just noticed that your overall length seems shorter than my typical setup which would seem easier to manage, although I understand water depth and desired depth reached changes the equation.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, It was about 4ft to the top dropper from the fly line though I have fished it a lot closer if I feel the fish are a bit higher and from the top dropper to the middle was 4 ft and then about 5ft to the point as this I felt covered the depth and areas I wanted the flies to fish..I do cut the leader and then join them with a double blood knot..Thanks again for all your kind words and comments.. All the very best Davie

Hi John, I was just using a fulling mill 5lb fluorocarbon right through but I did put a nymph on the point which is tyed with fine copper wire and helps to turn the cast over..I do like using a tapered cast for both dries and wets and even when I'm salon fishing as they do help to turn the flies over...I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. Great video!!! How about some tips for the fishers who don't yet know how to read current seams, breaks and shade lines so they can understand why you cast in a specific spot. In a world where most people talk the talk but can't walk the walk you are the ultimate exception. You not only tie the fly but fish what you tie!!!!! And well!

Can you talk about the concept of using the reel or not using the reel? I use my reel and drag, but often see folks striping the line in like your doing. I find that loose line in the water is a line management hindrance, and a fighting fish can entangle your liter in with the trailing loose line. You also eliminate the function of reel drag. I've tinkered with it to see if there was a benefit to it. I am able to control drag tension adequately, but I found the loose line to be a nuisance to me personally. I like the idea of decreasing the step of spoiling out your line and the quick casting at the initial process of spoiling out the line and already having a set distance of line out to hit the zone you want. So its simply preference. So then you dont find the loose line a neusence or a tangling issue. You dont run into leader and line tangling issues?

Hi love your videos , I was just curious if you have some advice for me .I use an 8 weight rod with a floating line and fish muddlers and wooly buggers with cone heads . Do have a good leader formula that I could use for that setup ? All good if you don't, also was wonder if you have any videos of you fishing ponds ?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi TownieOutdoors, I use a 10ft 8 weight for fishing salmon flies which are tyed on copper, alloy and plastic tubes and as well doubles and singles which is much the same as you are fishing with. To get these flies to turn over well I use 9ft tapered leaders down to 10lb which I would add on a couple of foot of tippet of 10lb or 8lb depending on the fly I was fishing..On my double handed rod I would use a longer tapered leader around 12ft..I don't have any videos of me fishing the small lochs even though I managed a small fishery for many years though I will be doing one or two hopefully this summer.. All the very best Davie..

What's the advantage keeping the rod at a 90 degree angle to the fly line? Tippet protection? Easier recasting? Better hook setting?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fly Rider, Better hook setting and tippet protection would be the main reasons as when a fish takes the rod will cushion the pull and I find I hook up a lot more...Many years ago when I worked as a fishery manager we bought a strain of rainbows that hit so hard that you had to try and soften the take and this was by far the best way to stop getting broke off though it's a method I have used for many years..Great question.. All the very best Davie..

Almost as if we were fishing with you! A beautiful time on the river! Very enjoyable! Keep ‘em coming! I put my droppers on short looped tags that I tighten against the knots on my home made tapered leaders. The loops make it easy to change my droppers if there is no interest in the flys I have chosen. When I was still a teenager, over 50 years ago, most of our wets came from the UK that way …. Similar to snelled bait hooks you can still buy! Tight lines!

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Quick question…what’s the average water depth you were fishing? Seeing the spacing of your flies on your tippet got me to thinking I’ve been setting up my droppers too close to one another and likely on too short of a leader.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, I should have said that I had the flies well apart due to no sign of any fish moving or rising so this allows me to search for fish at different depths as I did catch on all three flies...Anything from 2f to 4ft apart between dropper and I always like it a little longer to the point..I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie
