Given that Kevin Fiege has stated that Avengers Endgame is the conclusion to the story arcs of the original Avengers, (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye), the movie has to see them, and not a brand new character, defeat Thanos. You don't write a story about one character, asking the audience to invest in that one character, and then complete that character's story with a wholly different character. That would be writing so bad it would be far worse than anything we've seen in the MCU, worse even than Thor: The Dark World. What I think Captain Marvel's role is likely to be, is that because her powers derive from an Infinity Stone, she is going to give the Avengers the advantage they need to defeat Thanos. If you go back to Infinity War, while Thanos was easily beating everyone who took a shot at him, Scarlet Witch was able to hold him off. She was powerful enough to both hold him off and destroy an Infinity Stone at the same time, and like Captain Marvel, Wanda's powers derive from an Infinity Stone. So that's what I think Captain Marvel's role is likely to be. She is going to be that one character Thanos can't beat, but whom can't single-handedly beat Thanos, which will instead be achieved by any of the original Avengers. By the way, I think after the battle with Thanos, which I believe the Avengers will win, Captain Marvel won't be relevant to the rest of the story. I don't think she will be present in the rest of the story. She will help them defeat Thanos, but for whatever reason the original Avengers will have to travel back in time to undo what he did, which won't involve Captain Marvel.

Theoretically none of them could physically beat Thanos by themselves. Something the MCU never really focused much on was the fact that Thanos is half deity. Did you see when he grabbed StormBreaker & almost rammed into Thor’s chest? He can use Mjolnir too. I understand why Marvel didn’t want to tell that part of the story. That’s why Scarlett Witch couldn’t rip him apart when she had him in her grasp. Granted he’s a Titan but a his mother & father were very different. Hence why he never looks like the other Titans. One of his parents was a God Like Ego. Plus, a Spell was placed on him at birth preventing any mental spell or magic from taking over his body. He’s not indestructible but he’s damn close.
