Little mistake on the rules: 1) if you guess right you keep the card 2) if you guess wrong you discard the card AND the card at the top of the pile. 3) if you say you don't know you only discard the current card.

I heard about this back in October, but the game wasn't available so I went to the dollar store and picked up like twenty whiteboards and wrote a bunch of Halloween-themed words on 3x5 cards and played it at a Halloween party. We didn't even keep score, we just let anyone who guessed wrong have a second turn. A good time was had by all!

I took an old Taboo game and used those cards along with 20 white boards, if your words matched, or even matched the Taboo words, you couldn't use those words. All our party games we play Boys vs Girls.

Just One is just fun! Had a blast with it over the Thanksgiving holidays. My mom even said it was her favorite game that she played during her visit. My one quibble is that the cards are semi-transparent, so if you try, you can read the top words from the back while the card is in the stand (as pointed out by one of my daughters) - so don't try!
@opey2dope
@opey2dope 2 жыл бұрын
When I last played, we took a random card from the deck to act as a "blocker card". We slid that card behind the guesser's card, facing the other way, to block out the card, so you couldn't read the guess card through the back. That "blocker card" wasn't part of the score, and just got passed around. You could even use a card from another game for this purpose if you wanted to avoid the distraction of having a card facing the other way.

I think this game would benefit from a 'traitor' aspect, where one (or more in a large group) player tries to hinder the guessing player by writing down hints not helpful at all. Kinda like that Dixit-esque game about dreams and sleeping.

This seems to be a 5-player game. If two of the four clues are the same you still have two left. With 4 players you have only one left.

Agree that it's nice to see a straightforward game that didn't try to add a needless theme. But at the same - that's something that makes me not want to buy the game; it's so simple and I feel like I could play this game using many other game components I already own (word-games like Codenames), plus some pen and paper.

@@dandurkin9735 Hm, that completely kills any interest for me. It seems interesting, but games where you're only playing against the game, like check your score against a table to see how well you did like this has, seem sort of pointless to me. Definitely wish there was a competitive/team mode. I'm sure you could house rule it pretty easily, but I'm not going to buy a game I have to change a lot about just for it to be playable for me.

@@Jatt2613 I don't see any way to house rule it for competitive. The closest thing to that is probably dixit. Just get that if you dislike the scoring. My group tends to play things like Just One without scoring though. Its just a party game after all
@AccioPadfoot12

I haven't played yet but I would like it to be competitive too. I've thought of a solution and I'll try it out after playing through once as the rules go. So, in my mind, it can be modified if you have at least five players. Three to write the clues, two to guess for different teams (and peeps could rotate if it's manageable). THe players writing the clues do so as usual, compare their cards, and toss any that match. Then whichever of the guessing players shouts the answer first gets the point. OR they could alternate which of them is guessing, and if one can't get it, the other can steal the point by guessing correctly (like in Family Feud). This could be randomized by taking answer cards out of Codenames (the red and blue square solution cards), place them face down (as many as match the number of Just One word cards you are using), and once the clues are written, turn over one. Whichever color 'goes first' for Code Names on that card could be the guessing player for Just One. There would have to be an equal amount of red and blue, and the last Just One clue set would have to be 'shouted out' for the answer (first correct answer wins). HOpe all that made sense. Oh - I suppose if there are enough cards and enough people, competition could be set by just having two teams play independently and seeing who correctly guesses the most cards out of a stack of however many you decide.

I wonder how Zee would compare this to Trapwords. I haven’t played this but from the vid, I think I prefer Trapwords. It has a funny theme and the play is much more engaging and hilarious. Basically, imagine the struggle of avoiding obvious words played out loud in real time.

Still not sold on it. It does not look bad, but I feel Werewords and other party games out-do this one. Plus why such a huge price tag on this? Telestrations at least gives you triple the amount of words, and huge boards to draw on at, give or take, the same price(8 player version on amazon). Plus I think the team aspect may hurt this one. Wish there was a team variant- this coming from a guy who's not huge on team vs team games, but appreciate them well enough in party settings. Playing for best score, and "hey let's try again" seems merely okay. Still, will like to try it down the line, maybe I'm just a peasant after all, and don't know better ;)

This game puts me asleep just listening to the description. Oh my, I hope it doesn't win the "Spiel des Jahres"! "Werewords" (copycat accusations apart) is a MUCH better game, no contest here, and even the simplistic "Lama" runs rings around it.
