My mother had a 1937 Modern Hygeine vacuum cleaner that kept cutting out; she'd had it since she was first married, but by the early 1960's it was starting to wear (imagine - only 25 years old, and tired already - compare to modern junk). I diagnosed it as worn brushes, so I took it apart, sanded the brush contact surfaces flat, took a broken hacksaw blade and cleaned out a little of the insulation between the motor's commutator contacts, and put it back together. It lasted until the '90's, when an idiot house cleaner plugged it into a 220V outlet. At 60 years old, it was still running like a top. The filter was a heavy felt bag with a rubber seal around the edge. You'd empty it, shake it out in the back yard so the wind took the dust, and wash it every now and then. I loved the way things used to be made, and I learned so much as a poor kid who had to fix everything that broke because we couldn't afford new ones after my dad died when I was 10. This video brought back memories. The self-reliance and inventiveness my early life taught me led to creation of products in the computer world, a business, an IPO in 1995, and early retirement in 1997. Sometimes adversity is a gift.

What's wrong with 220V ??? We use that in Denmark where I live, and the vast majority of countries in the world use 220V....

Not a thing; our stove was 220 volt, our air conditioner/space heater was 220 volt, my radial arm saw was 220 volt, the water heater, etc. But it's overkill for lighting, imposing higher insulation requirements, and so 110 is used where 110 will serve, as it imposes less fire risk and lower costs.

Every size of carbon brushes can be bought. They also depend on use for hardness etc. They cost a few cents so this is utterly retarded.

Carbon brushes are readily available and even if you are unable to get any replacements most folk have some other old unused electrical gadget with brushes in the motor that you can salvage. As long as the replacements are the same size or larger it is simple to use a file or abrasive paper to reduce to the correct size to fit. Far better than making them from carbon dust!

Wasn't the 'carbon dust' mixed with baking soda and superglue to repair the screw cap and the carbon rod from battery used for a replacement brush?

Хотел вставить в корпус её три аккумуляторных по 1,2v и заменить в газовой колонке две по 1,5v на одну такую на 3,6v. Чтоб не покупать через год, а заряжать. Спасибо ролику, посмотрел, как разобрать батарейку.

I notice a few comments that are somewhat negative in their approach , yet in reality they are sadly missing the point . Indeed you can maybe go out and find new parts ,although I doubt you would find a replacement plastic screw for an older model . The very essence of this video is an exercise in self reliance , as has been stated by others . As a retired electrical contractor I can guarantee that many electrical components that find their that to the tip are often a simple fix , the classic fault being a broken cable inside the flex . The fault is brought about by the winding and unwinding of the flex over time , this tends to break at a point close to where it enters the equipment . So an easy fix is is to remove a length of flex before it enters the device and re terminate it , usually I would advocate about 30 centimetres as a rough guide . By such knowledge I have rescued numerous peace of equipment , and ironically for other tradesmen who were considering scraping a high value tool . So well done you for producing this video Best wishes and kind regards to your good self . 😀👍👍👍

Tried this with a double A batt out of curiosity, I've used this and similar methods like it in the past with good success but not for a while now, hence the experiment but was disappointed in the results. I don't know if it's just the way they're making batteries now but when I stripped it down I was surprised to find some sort of goo saturated fibrous pulp instead of a carbon rod running down the centre. Need to try this again with a D size batteries in case it's just the double A that's like this. (Batt type used GP alcaline)

Don't use alkaline batteries to do this! They will create a mess! Only use the older kind carbon zinc ones as they are drier and less messy, but STILL do not get the carbon zinc on your furniture or floor as it is REAL hard to clean up! Ask me how I know.....🙄🙄😁

Each carbon brush has a hardness set by the factory. This carbon brush wears depending on the carbon hardness, the rotation speed and pressure of the spring. Using carbon rods from discarded batteries will shorten the life of the motor. Do not rely on these suggestions. Buy the original manufacturers brushes.

ciao nice idea but one side u need to isolate the contact fixed due where u screw it is made with carbon+ glue ... and u risk a shock by ur contact ... or not?
