Should Americans wish each other "Happy holidays" or "Merry Christmas"? Should an office "Christmas party" be called a "holiday party" so that it's more inclusive? Dennis Prager answers these questions and more in this short video.

The change from wishing fellow Americans "Merry Christmas" to wishing them "Happy Holidays" is a very significant development.
Proponents of "Happy Holidays" argue it's no big deal - proponents of "Merry Christmas" are making a mountain out of a molehill.
But the "Happy Holidays" advocates want it both ways. They dismiss opponents as hysterical; but at the same time, in addition to replacing “Merry Christmas” with "Happy Holidays,” they have relentlessly pushed to replace “Christmas vacation” with “winter vacation” and “Christmas party” with
"Holiday Party.”
So, then, which is it? Is all this elimination of the word “Christmas" important or not?
The answer is obvious. It's very important. That’s why so much effort is devoted to substituting other words for “Christmas.” And these efforts have been extraordinarily successful. In place of the universal “Merry Christmas” of my youth, in recent decades I have been wished "Happy Holidays" by every waiter and waitress in every restaurant I have dined; by everyone who welcomes me at any business; by my flight attendants and pilots; and by just about everyone else.
When I respond, "Thank you. Merry Christmas!" I often sense that I have actually created some tension. Many of those I wish "Merry Christmas" are probably relieved to hear someone who feels free to utter the “C” word, but all the sensitivity training they've had to undergo creates cognitive dissonance.
The opponents of "Merry Christmas" and other uses of the word "Christmas" know exactly what they’re doing. They’re disingenuous when they dismiss defenders of "Merry Christmas" as fabricating some “War on Christmas.”
Of course it's a war on Christmas, or, more precisely, a war on the religious nature of America. The left in America, like the left in Europe, wants to create a thoroughly secular society. Not a secular government - which is a desirable goal, and which, in any event, has always been the case in America - but a secular society.
Most people do not realize that the left believes in secularism as fervently as religious Jews and Christians believe in the Bible. That's why "Merry Christmas" bothers secular activists. It's a blatant reminder of just how religious America is - and always has been. So, here's a prediction: Activists on the left will eventually seek to remove Christmas as a national holiday.
Now, the left doesn't announce that its agenda is to thoroughly secularize American and European societies. Instead, they offer the inclusiveness argument: that "Merry Christmas" or "Christmas party" or "Christmas vacation" is not "inclusive."

If someone wishes me "anything" I say "thank you;" they could've said nothing. It shouldn't matter what you say if you're sincere. Taking the time to wish another person, anything at all, is indicative of good intentions.

because the word Holiday = Holy day, which just means a day set apart (for honorary or celebratory purposes). Holy however is linked to 'religion' (for no reason) and holiday season is 'religious' institution. So theoretically, an atheist can't really *'celebrate'* any of the 'holidays' because they all involved Judeo-Christian or pagan, not truly atheistic. PS (I don't believe in secular/religious divide)

Merry Christmas is said pretty much all the time, same as Happy Holidays 2:05 You want a secular government and for Christmas, a religious holiday, to be a national holiday. The contradiction is astounding 2:20 Ah yes, because Jews believe the Bible, not like, the Torah Also, on your point that Jews and Christians both celebrate Christmas, it is ignoring one very important point: other religions exist. I am slightly astonished that if it constitutes as whining to disagree about Trump's policies (and it's not remarkably hard to do that), then how is it not whining to complain and make a six minute video where the host has a problem with people saying "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas". This isn't a big issue, it's just a phrase. Christmas isn't the only holiday in the December, there's: Hannukah, Yule, Christmas, and New Years Eve. If someone's Jewish, I saw Happy Hannukah; if someone's Christian, I say Merry Christmas; my friend and I wish each other a Happy Yule every year. It's just a phrase, it's pleasantries. @novatopaz9880
@novatopaz9880 5 жыл бұрын
Shadowdroid776 No idea. But yeah, it is just pleasantries. And said pleasantries are usually chained together, like saying have merry Christmas *and* a happy new year. You usually get more odd looks for not using more than one holiday than you are for saying merry Christmas, in and of itself... I’ll use any combination of the above as I see fit, and never just one of them, unless I am talking with a personal friend or someone else who I know doesn’t really care for those small details. In the US, if nothing else, at least Wisconsin, Christmas is synonymous with basically the whole month of December and into January(excluding the new year), as that is the span of time during which preparations for the holidays happen, there is snow piling up, and is also when most everyone gets released from whatever they do for a living or for education, to spend time with family that may otherwise be unavailable. If you use anything else, that’s fine as well, they all refer to the same general time frame.

@Speaker Box "Changing America's Identity?" What does free speech and free religion actually mean? What does All Men are Created Equal actually mean? 'Believe in the late-December virgin birth of Christ or you're not really American'? Christmas is a holiday, thus "Happy Holidays" doesn't exclude Christmas. It's not being ignored... Most Americans including myself celebrate Christmas- due as much to American tradition as it is pure Christian faith... Christmas isn't getting replaced, it was just never alone. "Happy Holidays" is just an acknowledgement that not everyone celebrates Christmas, and that is all. It's genuinely intended to be courteous. Holiday greetings are generally intended to be pleasant... Being American means being free. You don't have to believe anything or say anything.
@GrassValleyGreg
@GrassValleyGreg 3 жыл бұрын
@Speaker Box "freedom of speech gives you the right to mock it?" Yes, it does. What does Freedom of Speech mean to you? That one has "freedom of speech" unless one speaks freely?? "Just cause a kind of speech is protected under the first amendment doesn’t make it correct.." That's exactly my point. No American can be nor should be forced to adhere to any particular doctrine. Regardless of tradition. We ALL have the ability to speak freely. The very idea that *certain* free speech presents discomfort to so many merely represents the value of free speech itself. Thus, I believe "Happy Holidays" is a perfectly innocuous holiday greeting.

There's a lot of issues with the arguments presented. First off, replacing terms like "Christmas Vacation" with "Winter Vacation" doesn't really require a lot of effort, like the video implies. It's the winter time, and multiple significant holidays take place during this time of year. It's just a pragmatic way of addressing those holidays. As far as advocating for a secular society, you never explain why that's necessarily a bad thing. More secular countries tend to have fewer teen pregnancy, lower crime and their citizens generally report being happier. Ironically, the bastardized version of Christmas portrayed in this video is more reminiscent to that of Yule; which is a Paegen holiday. Clearly, those who make the argument that a more secular tradition is a detriment aren't very consistent. Also, you're really one to talk when it comes to cognitive dissonance. You mention that if you wish someone a Merry Christmas, it would cause some kind of unrest to those around. Not long after this, you point out that you enjoy the Christmas tradition yourself and are deeply offended when someone doesn't wish you a Merry Christmas, as if this isn't blatent hypocrisy. Sorry, but you can't have it both ways unless there's a more valid reason behind your point. It doesn't matter if someone wishes you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or even Happy Ramadan. A more practical attitude is to say, "thanks, you too." Then, you can just go about your day. This is just fallacious propaganda.

This also goes the other way around. It doesn't take a lot of effort to understand Christmas is some holiday going on in America. You may not care much about this, but other people have more integrity and refuse to bend the knee to people whining about the slightest of details, like here where people seem to be oh so offended about Christmas having some religious roots. I don't believe in a god myself and I do not freaking care, but you're not going to force me about a holiday name that has been in use forever. It always has been called Christmas (Well, Noel here to be exact) and if you are offended by the holiday having some religious origin then you should look at yourself first before claiming we are the ones being offended. Can't wait for the current calendar/year system to be called out next, banned and secularized too because it is based on Jesus Christ's birth, imaging how offensive this is for the few

@LeffaFairy I agree that traditions change, but more than 300 ys is a long time, and Europeans celebrated it for much longer. You seem to regard traditions as something arbitrary that comes and goes. Some traditions require updates (eg to assure equality between men and women) but some traditions, like Christmas, are wonderful formative events for our children that connect us with fellow citizens (Christians and non) and with our ancestors. I am not a believer, but I do not believe we need to somehow erase our Christian heritage to be a better society. We differ on this, and that's ok...

@fucian j Where are your sources for any of these claims? Regardless, I was saying that the *majority of people* don't care if you say "merry Christmas." The government is not the majority of people. The man's claim wasn't that the government is waging a War on Christmas. His claim is that *people* were waging a War on Christmas. He was very clearly framing it as a matter of social attitude, which is why I addressed the topic from the perspective of it being a social attitude problem. Besides, Christmas is a deeply ingrained part of our country's culture. It hasn't gone anywhere and it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Take a walk down the neighborhood, and you're going to see Christmas lights, candy-canes, and all sorts of Christmas decorations. Go to the store, and they're already going to be selling Christmas items before Halloween has even come around. Turn on the televsion, and a whole bunch of Christmas shows, movies, and commercials are going to be playing. I, myself, attend a public school with a large number of students from other countries, and I had three of my teachers screen Christmas movies for our last day before the break. For my English class, I had to analyze "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. A large number of the staff were wearing ugly Christmas sweaters and Christmas inspired costumes. *Everybody* was talking about Christmas. I sat next to a muslim classmate of mine as the entire class watched "It's a Wonderful Time." Where are the consequences for my school? Are the staff not government employees? Even if you take away the words (which isn't something that's happening), you can't take away the holiday spirit itself. I mean, hell, even atheists celebrate Christmas. Again, say what you want. nobody cares. The "War on Christmas" is nothing but a warped sensationalism.
@freezerounds
@freezerounds 4 жыл бұрын
@fucian j "American society" is not a proper source. You can't just make those kind of assertions without backing it up with proper evidence. As for The Christian Post link, that's 1 article with a very evident bias from 1 publication with a potential bias because of it's religious affiliation. Not very credible. Even so, as much as I find it stupid, a corporation has every right to prohibit you from saying "merry Christmas." They're a private entity. I'll start getting concerned when the government tries to prohibit you from saying it -- and you have not provided proper evidence proving that they are. Moving on from that, the people who run our government are a very small group of people who often have their own agendas. They are not an accurate representation of the population as a whole; particularly not with this issue. Again, the argument in the video presented the issue as a social attitude problem, not a legal problem -- that's the angle i'm coming at this issue from. So, if you have any credible sources on your claims about the government, I would love to see them, because what you described is unconstitutional and in violation of our first amendment rights to freedom of speech and religion. Personally, I find it very strange that this would be occurring considering that Christmas is considered a national holiday, but I digress. And again, *say what you want, because absolutely nobody cares.* There is no double standard. There is no "War on Christmas." *It's not real. It's nothing more than politically-charged sensationalism.* As an American citizen who's lived in American society for his entire life, I've never noticed a War on Christmas. We love this holiday. Go wish your friends a Merry Christmas.

This ad huuurts. I feel like it must be a joke. "Is Merry Christmas now mostly being Happy Holidays a big deal?" ...no not at all. "YES it is a huge deal." ........wait what? "It's a war on religion." I wish, but it might be too late. Before, it could of lead to world peace. "By not saying Merry Christmas you're excluding me." But- no- what-? Holiday includes, everything, and can be said for many things. If we started with happy holidays would you care? It doesn't exclude you or exclude anything, it doesn't eveb change anything but the wording! And no one cares if you use your preference or not. It can just be convenient to default any holiday to, what it is, a holiday. Also, what is this talk about "the left"? Where is the left? Dare I say, which left? But seriously, I don't know what you meant when you kept saying left.

Nobody is saying that you can't say Merry Christmas. It's America do whatever you want just don't make other people say it. It's funny how the hardcore Christians are the ones enforcing "Merry Christmas" on everybody. People simply recommend that you use Happy Holidays to respect the possibility of other religions. Your business can't be shut down because you say "Merry Christmas" because that would violate freedom of speech. If somebody gets offended because you told them "Merry Christmas" it's not infringing your freedom of speech, they are simply exercising theirs.

When I say Merry Christmas I don't make the one that I say it to say it. They usually say "Merry Christmas", Same to you" or nothing at all and I'm fine with that. However, some people are told to say. "Happy Holidays" or face reprisal. In my workplace a global email was sent telling people not to "offend" someone by saying Merry Christmas and not to put objects that say Merry Christmas around when your decorating your space. Really! That's what I find that offensive. They can put LGBT signs all over the office with rainbows everywhere and even have events celebrating the LGBT community but I can''t hang a Merry Christmas poster in the department. We have several holidays in the year. No one is telling us not to say have a happy Thanksgiving, a happy 4th, happy Saint Valentines, happy St. Patrick's Day and even wish people a Happy Hanukkah but we can't say Merry Christmas. You say Christians are the one enforcing Merry Christmas but what about Christians being forced upon just because they have a belief. Everything is not black and white whoever your are. There are grays, blues, reds, greens and all sorts of colors that make up a world....except maybe in your eyes!

Being mad about "happy holidays" because you feel like the season of Christmas belongs to you is easily one of the most unchristian things imaginable. The whole lesson from the story of the birth of Jesus is to be welcoming. Mary and Joseph were refused from any decent place to give birth, so she had to do it in a barn. To be so exclusive as to rule out any other religion that practices in this season is to go against the essence of the very lesson you were supposed to learn in the first place, and a decent Christian would be ashamed to do such a thing.

I am a Catholic. I believe in Christmas, that we should keep Christ in Christmas, and I do agree that a number of your videos make very good points! But this is just crazy conspiracy. “Happy Holidays” isn’t meant to secular-ise Christmas, nor is it meant to erase the religious societal heritage of America. In fact, it’s meant to CELEBRATE our religious heritage! You incorrectly argue that Christianity is THE American religion. While many Americans are Christian, true, isn’t the wonderful thing about American society that it brings people from all different heritages together? America is Judaism, is Islam, is Buddhism, Sikhism, is the ancient but still living faiths of our first TRUE American tribes. And that’s only the beginning! While I agree that wishing someone a Merry Christmas is a right and harms no one, asserting the superiority of Christmas does more to enforce a secular society than infinite “Happy Holidays” ever could. When we only allow the existence of Christmas, then where is there room left for Kwanza, for Hanukkah, and all the other religious celebrations that happen to fall in winter? Historically, the sole recognition of Christmas has erased public knowledge of America’s rich and varied religious traditions. So, Prager U, let people say Happy Holidays. Let people say Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Yule, Merry Omisoka, Feliz Festividad de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. I promise you that this isn’t the oh so evil liberals seeking to personally destroy all that is good in the world. Oh, and next time you make a claim like this, please try to put together a better argument. This kind of conspiratorial nonsense is what further polarized the right from the left and makes agreement and fair discussion all the more difficult.
@niklashansen5432

This conspiracy nonsense is the foundation of Prager. The point is to claim that "the leftists wants to take away your freeeeeeedom". Then cut to another video where people like Prager [edit] arguing for how being able to buy politicians to give tax cuts, subsidies and let them write economic laws is the foundation of freedom that "the leftists" are trying to take away. Death by a thousand needles. If you focus on social issues and demonize the opposition "muh SJW´s" (doesn´t matter if you do the same thing), you can indoctrinate people to think it also applies to economic issues. Win-Win. Hell, even by clicking this video I have made money for Prager, and he knows that.

I have never known a person who says "Happy Holidays" who would get uneased, as you put it in your video, by someone saying "Merry Christmas." I also have known a lot of people, from the left and right political spectrum, who say "Happy Holidays" without wanting to end Christmas as a holiday altogether. Where are these people who you claim exist?

@@nonyabidness8676 really were do you live cause i've went though christmas in both georgia and NY in the past few year and in both states people said both happy holidays and merry christmas and no one cared either way....so I find it hard to believe that either phrase will start a long rant.

You know what's funny? One of my favorite Christmas songs is Andy Williams's "Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season" (Originally an Irving Berlin/Bing Crosby song, but Williams popularized it), and Andy Williams was a die-hard Republican back in his days, even going as far as to almost call Obama a Marxist in his later years. Of course, politics were way different around that time, but it goes to show that at least one person on the right side of the spectrum clearly did not mind the phrase "Happy Holidays!". Why can't more people be like that?

I don't remember if it's this video or one of PragerU's other Christmas videos, but there's a great bit where Prager points out that Irving Berlin was the one who originally wrote and composed "White Christmas", as if that somehow proves Jewish people (both in the past and now) don't feel excluded by Christmas. Like... you know Irving Berlin didn't make just that ONE song and then disappear into oblivion, right, Dennis? He made other shit too. Including "Happy Holiday", weirdly enough xD
