Scientists released a report just recently warning that Earth's freshwater and marine ecosystems are rapidly losing oxygen as a result of, well, fossil fuel-derived issues. If that deoxygenation process is not stopped before it goes beyond the threshold for sustainability of life, then our waters will become unable to sustain life at all. If you really care about things like "people's rights" (and lives) then it's about time you acted like Big Oil was "callously endangering them." These protesters are practically a non-issue compared to the issues they are protesting.

5 years is great considering most of the time they get arrested for only a few weeks this is game changing. A time like 10-13 years would be better but this is still pretty good.

The other is a protest movement opposed to the threat conservative capitalism poses to the human race's collective right to continue existing. They're doing _way_ less harm than the suffragettes ever did, but Big Oil is pouring lots of money into painting what they do as irredeemable evils... So yeah, I guess you're kind of right: The suffragettes didn't have to fight concentrated efforts by the mainstream industry, said industry's think tanks, media bought up by the corporate industry to peddle their narratives, people brainwashed by said corporate propaganda, and people paid off by Big Oil to badmouth their protesters in internet comment sections. The sentence of 4 and 5 years is not really that long of a sentence, they only actually serve 1/2 of that time in custody and the other half is like our probation. So they are really serving 2 years and 2.5 years, not the same as sentences in the US where you get good time to reduce your sentence but it doesn't amount to 1/2 the time sentenced.

The jail sentences should have been a lot more severe with large fines and post release conditions. Any violation upon release should be met with immediate imprisonment for a longer term sentence. These protesters are committing crimes and are therefore subject to the law.

No. They did protests that did lead to injury and the potential for (injury) it to be wider. Several people in the judgement and witness statements had their cancer treatment cancelled and had to reschedule, ambulances were signifcantly delayed, police officers were jnjured in their duty due to this. Not sure whether the length was right, but agree with guilty verdict and custodial sentance
