They're meant to go together to create a good tone for the song. Bass and guitar should be thought of as one instrument in a metal mix. They fill out each other's weaknesses in the sonic spectrum and combine to create the "guitar tone" you hear in a mixed song.

To me a good heavy mix with a bass the guitars always have a good amount of mids and enough (not too much) high frequencies in the tone while the bass has more bass in the eq. Meshuggah without the bass in their mixes would for sure not sound as heavy so to me that is an example of why a bass guitar might be important, even with an 8 string guitar.

That bass tone could fit perfectly in a Doom Eternal song.

I love the bass being the bass and I love the guitar being the guitar making great music together in the band. And I’m a ten string guitar player.

If you're listening to a song and can't seem to tell the difference: guitars will sound sharp but crunchy, basses will sound more chunky and full in lower and mid ranges

what are your thoughts on baritone guitars? I think ultimately, like the bass or 7,8,9 strings... they are there own thing. But Rabbea Massad really developed his own thing with Bari but as you said ... strings, pickups, scale length ... so each instrumen is a starting point rather than an end in and off itself

As someone who isn't very musicly inclined they do sound somewhat similar but also have a distinct difference

It's better on bass because bass is what makes the original song sound so good because that riff is mainly bass.

I am a firm believer that you can write incredible music with just a bass, and I personally prefer the sound of the bass, but they absolutely hold their own unique flavor that is hard to mistake for one another

I’m all for extended range . But as the neck gets thicker, tone sounds more and more “hollow” is how I’d describe it. There’s a comparison video between 8’s, 7’s, and six string baritone. Same tuning, same tone, baritone 6 string sounded heavier.

Given that the bass tone is much better you've conquered your own argument. JUST USE A BASS.
