Troy, thank you for this, on the anniversary of Benjamin (Orzechowski) Orr's passing away after a brief but valiant fight with pancreatic cancer. He was a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. I ❤ The Cars & Ben. 9/8/1947- 10/3/2000

I wasn't a bass player or musician in my youth. That said for context, I always loved this Cars tune among all others, and also Bye Bye Love. I wasn't a Ric fan, never cared for his vocal style and still do this day feel that Ben Orr's bass playing and vocals are among rock's greatest treasures.

Raised both of my girls on all of The Cars albums. They are certified country music free. Was able to see The Cars in concert to many times and was never disappointed with their performances. It's sad that the two key vocalist for the band have passed. Such an unique band with quirky lyrics written by Ric. One hellva combination plus their albums art work were well designed. Troy, it really was crazy popular in the late 70s. I was at a battle-of-the-bands where 3 out of 8 or so bands played it. You're right, it was a tough intro to nail consistently until you played it about a thousand times. Our keyboard player bought a second-hand Micro-Moog just to play the spacey keyboard parts. Most other bands were playing it on the guitar. Fun times. Thanks.
@TJH31134 жыл бұрын
Wow! At our variety shows, the bands had to submit their songs to the "panel" to make sure there were no duplicates or offensive lyrics. For example, one band was not allowed to play "Cocaine". Funny you mention the keyboard. We had a guy who bough a monophonic Univox synth, just for this song. Take care, Robert.

That is,not until I actually WATCHED you play it all on here!!! Loved it! Now I have much more respect for anyone who plays this song! Like You,I was never much of a Cars fan either! In fact,during the mid-80's ,when they went more towards their "pop" sound,is when I REALLY didn't care for any of their stuff! But yeah,back in their early days of late 70's,early 80's rock.............THAT is when they truly shined and although their music may not have meant very much to me back THEN.............the older I get,the MORE I truly appreciate it even more NOW!!! Anyway,just wanted to say GREAT COVER and I really enjoyed watching it! :-)

Whats so fascinating to me (as a meagre 22 year old) is the multitude of bands that were once so popular but have since faded into, by my generations standards, obscurity. And thats considering how much I enjoy finding all these old bands! (A particular favourite of mine is the band 'Free' and another would be 'Grand Funk Railroad') I mean I only found out about the Doobie Brothers because of this channel! (Although that might be owing to my parents general lack of interest in music🤣) but I did ask my parents about them they listed a barrage of songs for me to dig my teeth into, and from what I can tell they were massive in popularity! I guess my point is, its funny how some bands stand the test of time while others simply don't, and I can't help but wonder which artists today will be all but forgotten in the next couple of decades!
@TJH31134 жыл бұрын
Thanks for such a great comment, Mishak. In addition to being very positive, it highlights the absurdity of the "content owners" and KZbin blocking videos like mine (not that I really have much to complain about). The worst thing that is going to happen is that the artist's music will be exposed to a wider audience. Yeah, the music from before my time and during the 70's seems to have a, sort of, timeless quality to it that, as you said, may not be replicated by the artists of today. That's not to say the the 80's and 90's didn't have some incredible music that will always be "timeless" to me. Thanks again for the great comment.

Excellent, Troy. There is a book about Ben Orr that is worth a read. Originally, a respected drummer, vocalist, and lead guitarist in his native Cleveland. And, at a very young age. He was also featured on TV quite a bit locally during the mid 60's too. It's an interesting book. Quite the normal fellow, who unexpectedly, was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Thank you, I’ll have to try to check it out. If you would have asked me what his background was I would’ve assumed he grew up quite privileged in a Manhattan penthouse and got into music after his modeling career stalled. Awesome! I wouldn't say that I know the bass-lines better than the actual artist but, in some cases, I can organize and try to take the rough edges off of a bass-line that was ad-libbed or improvised. Stuff like that is a real challenge to emulate. This one was definitely tricky and, if I were playing it live, I'd just pick my favorite parts (the ones I felt the most confident playing and the ones I thought sounded the best) and just go with those. Details are nice, but no one in an audience is going to have a clue. Thanks so much and say "Hi!" to your fiancé.

Troy, I appreciate your bass vids, so keep em coming. Just a thought on what you noted about possibly "much more to the part" after the G to G# flourish at 2:58 (in your vid): I do not think the usual pattern of B - C# - E (then back to B) resumes immediately after that flourish, but instead in the isolated track I'm hearing E - E - C# played at the spot corresponding to 2:59 in your vid (or 2: 43 in the isolated track vid) then back to the usual ending on B and resumption of the usual pattern thereafter. Let me know your thoughts on that? Thanks!

That´s what started me to music! \o/ I´ve been heard Buzzcocks created the genre, but this sounds so much like 2000s Pop Punk songs in a 70s punk band... Glad to listen to them for the first time on your cover!! and nice fail at the of Carry on Wayward Son from Kansas hahahah ! something wrong that came out good at the final result tho! :p

The Cars are mad catchy. Loved this! I know you said you had a backlog of “classic” songs you wanted to cover and generally aren’t looking to post-2000 music, but I’d love to hear you do a Strokes song, maybe Is This It since it’s got a pretty nice bassline. Maybe it’s a bit simplistic considering what you normal cover though.
@TJH31134 жыл бұрын
Definitely! Thanks. Did I say that? I'll take your word for it and will check out your suggestion. I don't have anything against "simple", as long as it's good.

@@blupupher Great point! The camera steals the soul.
@TJH31134 жыл бұрын
@@vibrolax, blupupher is correct. A lot of my head movements are to avoid looking directly into the camera. I just think it looks weird. The problem with that is, if I stare at one thing for too long, I tend to lose my focus. When I'm trying to get through these songs in one take and without making any glaring errors I cannot be concentrating too much, or too little. If that makes any sense.
@vibrolax4 жыл бұрын
@@TJH3113 Of course it makes sense. I'm a musician too. Playing tunes and singing lyrics are like pulling linked sausages out of a box. If one tries to think too far ahead, or look back at what was just played, you're gonna be off the rails. It's all about staying in the now.

I love the Cars music and think apart from having great radio friendly songs, they were actually all very good musicians - Ben Orr is very underrated as a bass player, and although he only took it seriously when the Cars formed, some of his bass lines are very good - and you've just shown why with this cover
