Did Ben Orr really come up with those sneaky good lines? Forgive me as I know nothing of his musical backround. To me I could imagine either Okasec, or a producer suggesting those little sneaky bits. Thanks for any enlightenment. Btw , your bass sound killer!
@francoisdubois802 жыл бұрын
@@secretjourney4815 I have to believe that he did. There is an (MTV - Mark Goodson) interview out there just before or as his solo album was released where Ben talks about being very comfortable with musical arrangements, etc. but always struggled with Lyric. IIRC - in the interview he states that all of his solo album music was completed long before he came up with lyrics.

Ben has been a musician from a very early age ... He started in drums (13 years of lessons by his own discussion), moved to rhythm guitar, and then to lead guitar as the head of the Cleveland band The Grasshoppers. He wrote songs for them. And then there were the years where he and Ric knocked around in different bands. Ben had plenty of musical background.

Benjamin Orr was the Rock-N-Roller with The Hollywood Looks who could effortlessly Cook his Bass on Stage and make it LQQK So Easy! The Maestro Of Fashionable Coolness and a Voice that made ALL our Dates to the Show Swoon! LOLOL My Favorite CARS Tune was "Since You're Gone"! Has a tremendous back story for me personally and I just always loved the music of that particular song! I finger pick myself as Geddy was always my "Teacher". But I also loved how Chris Squire used his pick and in many ways Benjamin does his pick justice too! I read years ago that Benjamin preferred Felt Picks. Just something I never forgot! So Much Fun hanging out with you Troy and The Posse of Fans in here! Cheers From Ohio To the TJHH3113 Crowd!
@TJH31132 жыл бұрын
Yes, Ben was definitely the matinee idol of the band, wasn't he? Interesting about the felt picks. Now that I think of it, there is a "dullness" to his sound that is usually not present when someone uses a pick and a felt pick would explain that. Thanks and take care!

All of the members of The Cars were talented, gifted musicians in their own right. That talent was reflected in how tight they were when playing live. They were so dedicated to quality they built their own studio, too.

@@stevestruthers6180 Great comment Steve! I live here in Columbus, Ohio and down on Hight Street ( appropriate name for Rock-N-Rollers of those times🤣) and Ric Ocasek was living around the Ohio State Campus next to High St. The Agora was the happening place for music too even though it was a really small venue. Ric was absolutely a maker and shaker of the music scene here in the late '70's and early 80's until The Cars got vaulted into the spotlight! Very cool about having their own studio as well. Ben was one of those guys who were just too cool for school, along with Sting, Phil Lynott and Paul Simonon. Check out The Cars on Rock Goes To College, a BBC series that featured a 40 minute set from English Universitys. At 15 years old and and trying master their riffs, Ben's lines always intrigued, plus he used an Ampeg stack and a Stingray, which were both unobtainable in 1978 post-war Britain...just cool as ......😊

It's great that you're enjoying the archeological exploration of The Cars bass lines. Love the commentary & observations at the end. I've mentioned that Ben Orr was a multi-instrumentalist - started out as a drummer, then moved to rhythm guitar (and vocalist, of course) & some keyboards before becoming The Cars' bassist. I wonder if you can hear this in his playing? The position of playing bass reportedly wasn't his favorite - but was out of necessity that he started playing. I have noted that you said in the past that you've never been a fan... how about now? ;) You seem to be really enjoy digging into the isolated bass/vocals recording. I do that quite a bit, and am always amazed at the nuances that can be buried beneath the rest of the instruments & effects. The thing about Ben, if you have time to watch some videos of live performances - he knows just what the song needs - not too much, not to little. Enjoyed this one very much - thanks, Troy!!

Most of the great melodic bass players were at some point a good guitarist and had solid backgrounds in music. McCartney and John Paul Jones are great examples.
@TJH31132 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carolyn. If not for the isolated tracks I wouldn't have come close to what he was playing on this song... or "Just What I Needed" too. I knew that he played guitar, but not that he also played drums and keys. Ben definitely does not play (or compose bass-lines) like a traditional bass player. His rhythm and note choices are not as intuitive as a lot of bass-lines that I learn. I don't know if I'd ever call myself a "fan" of the band, but I do have a much more robust respect for them than I once did. I think I've always been more of a "song" or "album" guy, as opposed to a "band" guy, with a couple of exceptions.
@carolyngutierrez98042 жыл бұрын
Also, noting your observation of hearing the bass line in a higher register... he often recorded with an Octavator pedal.

To be honest, Ben seemed to be more of a presence than a bass player. I don't mean that as an insult. I just think he did what he needed to do in order to get in front of both the microphone and the spotlight. Troy, thanks for yet another eye-opening bass tutorial. Like you, I first learned this by ear from the original track where the bass is not only mixed back, but in so many places "sounds" like it's played an octave higher. Maybe that's just a product of the mix back where we hear harmonics more than the fundamental? Maybe it's a guitar mixed over the bass? I don't know, but I agree that there's no trace of the higher octave sound in the isolated bass track. But your video has me going back and relearning the tune. Oh, and you showed me that I don't have to play this with a pick. Honestly I like this bassline v2.0 much better! Cheers! Dave L.

I specifically came to see what Verbal Goodies you left Troy with Miss Marine! I immediately thought of my Grandma Jan...she LOVED the Everly Brothers and I can't begin to tell you how many times she would sing this to me and my siblings as we packed the Family's Fire Engine Red Volkswagen Microbus to head back home from her Corona Del Mar home! I smile with a few tears in my eyes anytime I hear their version! Thank You for A Grand Memory Miss Marvine! You be safe and well this up coming week and a shout out to your Son for taking you Out On The Town for your Birthday last week! Cheers From Ohio and Keep Strutting!

I had my guitar on when I clicked on this video so I started playing along. After a few measures, I put the guitar down and started paying attention. That bass! Wow. So much character in the tone. You could play that bass on a thousand songs. I love the graphic on the headstock. You must wear a wizard outfit and play an appropriate song (“The Wizard,” by Sabbath?). Are you using the Bass Driver DI (v2) for that bass?
@TJH31132 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob, I'm very please with how the bass turned out. As much as I love every bass that I've collected, I plan on whittling the collection down to a more reasonable number and this bass will definitely be amongst the keepers. Yes, Bass Driver Ver. 2.

Ben Orr > Ric Ocasek... His voice is pure silk woven out of gold. Great cover Troy. It's all about the details, you have a great ear! Love the summary at the end! What kind of bass is that?? I typically don't go for unorthodox body shapes, but I dig that bass! Is it a Zon??

Ben seems to be the fan favorite. Thanks John! The bass was made for my by Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars. Joe has worked on my basses for years. He also works for Carl Thompson and does his own builds as well.

Great job, Troy. I've had that isolated track for a few years and, like you, I've put off learning it. Funny, a friend of mine toured with him playing bass in the 90's. One little tidbit was that Corey Feldman followed them around the West Coast and would be invited onstage to sing 'Just What I Needed'. 'He was a real good kid' my friend said. The other little tidbit was you couldn't mention Ocasek around him. If you did, he'd launch into expletives, 'That Mother....' I gathered from the conversation, although not explicitly said, that it had something to do with him getting screwed out of royalties. Anyway, I'm curious about that solo in the beginning and why you chose to finish off that E-B-A part at the end of it at the 14-12th fret rather than go back and finish it off at the 9th fret E. When I do it your way, it sounds better because you slide from the A back to the root E. But you're out of position for that E. If you go to the 9th, you're in position but it doesn't sound as cool. I might end up doing it your way, depending on what you end up saying because it does sound better. Either way, you inspired me to sit down with a couple of beers and finally get off my ass to learn this. Thanks!
@TJH31132 жыл бұрын
Thanks Timothy. I've seen a few clips of him in the 90's in decent sized clubs. It's cool that they were kind to Corey. Seeing how Ocasek dealt with his marriage, I don't doubt that he was a ruthless businessman. I played the E on the 12th fret because it sounded a bit less "jumpy" than it did when I'd jump down to the E on the 7th fret. Ben played a bit "slurry" at times and his sound was a tad "blurry", so, because of those factors, I didn't have a n issue playing the E that high up the neck.
@timothyd95432 жыл бұрын
@@TJH3113 I experimented with playing the 'solo' in the beginning ending at the 7th fret as well as playing that Bm opening and closing lick by playing that whole lick on the G string except for the root. The Bm is somehow awkward to play like that because you have to play it really quickly and smoothly and the time it takes to go to that next string throws it off. You're playing both the same way that Ben played it so that's what I'm going with. Sadly, the royalties thing happens all the time. If you look at the credits for any Jane's Addiction song, for example, it's 'Music by Jane's Addiction, lyrics by Perry Farrell', seemingly meaning that he gets 2/5 share of any royalties. Pretty scummy - no wonder they broke up. Yeah, who knows with his marriage. he cut her out of his will. But she was traipsing around on red carpets with some younger guy while they were still married. So there's that.

Damn Troy! Did they have to cut half the forest down to find that beautiful pice of wood for that bass! DAMN! That’s Awesome! As you can tell I’m not only a fellow bass player. But I love woods. I use to work for A lumber company in So. California in the early 80’s for 4 years. I handled almost every kind of wood you’ll probably ever see or hear of. Anyways, What’s the wood and who makes that bass man?

The body is Mahogany with a thin Maple slice and Bastogne Walnut on top. I gave some more details on it in my previous video. It was built by the fellow who has been working on my basses for the last 5 or 6 years, Joe Kruse, of MBJ Guitars. He also works for Carl Thompson.
