Idk if you’re still active on KZbin but as someone who now creates content about our beautiful Creole culture, I truly appreciate the work that you put into spreading our culture. I know you dealt with a ton of BS responses, mostly from one community in particular as I now deal with that same hostility but I’m sure it was even worse for you 10-15 years ago when many of these videos were published. Thanks again for all the work you’ve put into this channel. Hopefully you’ll see my comment & feel my utmost gratitude ⚜️⚜️✊🏼✊🏽

There was a concerted effort with the creation of codofil in the 60's to seperate white and black creoles in Louisiana. I war raised in Louisiana and grew up not understanding that creoles were basically people born in Louisiana pre-1803 (colonial times) and their descendents - or if I did know it, the few times I've attempted to refer to myself as such, I've gotten attacked for various reasons. The biggest shock I had was when I learned that pretty much all cajuns are creole but not all creoles are cajun (I'm both). This is a wonderful conversation that we still .... 15 years after it was posted ... is still very important to hear and still very relevant. Thank you.

Nothing wrong with being proud of our Creole heritage and I'm not about to let anyone make me feel as if I need to deny any parts of who I am just so they may feel relevant. My father's family was Creole and my mother's family was Black...I love being what I am and deny none of me. :)

French-creole sounds to me like you are saying that you are part Cajun? I am from Charleston SC and we have a big left over population of Creoles. A term the spanish used to refer to people born of mixed race in the new worlkd. Mainly the southern US, because of the large spanish population. Anyone with European, Native american, and african ancestry born in the new world were considered CREOLE. Ask my Grandma she would tell you. Her name was Elmira Mobley. Cant get more Creole than that?

I am Creole from Slidell, LA and I am learning how to speak Louisiana Creole as are my twins. It bothers me when AA ( African-Americans) seem as if I am insulting them by not saying I am AA. Yet when I refer to myself as black , the next question is what am I mixed with. I relate to AA because I am a person of color but i do not fully Identify w/ them. I'm mixed but not first generation so I am not "biracial" but through several generations mixed. It is who I am. What is wrong with me being me?

The word Creole is an adaptation of the Spanish word criollo. The term Creole and its cognates in other languages - such as crioulo, criollo, créole, kriolu, criol, kreyol, kriulo, kriol, krio, kreol, etc. - have been applied to people in different countries and epochs, with rather different meanings. Those terms are almost always used in the general area of present or former colonies in other continents, and originally referred to locally-born people with foreign ancestry.

I'm Creole! My family is a mixture of Frinch Spanish black and Native American ( Choctaw Indain) I speek Patois frinch, and it's a mix of Frinch and Spanish. Span own LA b-4 France. Spanish And Frinch traders formed the slang in order to do business. They traded furs goods and slaves. Frinch men liked black females and traded goods for them. They often took them as Concubins(wifes). This is where the black in the creole come together. Due to racism these people formed parishes and culture.

We are from Louisiana. We were from France. We refused to fight in for Nepolian, because we were French and Jewish. When we came over, I think that it was still French. We dropped speaking French and switched to English also due to racism, but then, we were having to do that for several centuries, anyway. At least it was only you won't get anywhere with us if you don't speak English, it wasn't like it was still change you language or die.

The French also brought over slaves from Haiti to south Louisiana before the Haitian revolution started. One of 4 great grandfather was once of them but a lot of these people from Louisiana refuse to except this part of there history. Because they loved their French and Spain masters so much, but it is written and thought in our history books in college. They just read pass that part really fast. The mother of Charles Deslondes, the leader of the 1811 uprising was a slave from Ayiti.

I've read in the DR, there's a practice of cultural discrimination against people who are dark-skinned and possess (so-called) nappy hair. I also understand, there's a lucrative business in "skin lightners" and "hair relaxing treatments " on the island. At times, even young children who are darker-skinned and coarse haired are taunted and ridiculed by their lighter-skinned peers. This is the same practice i've seen as a child (I'm a dark-skinned male) in New Orleans in the '50s and '60s.

The creoles of French Guiana are probably the genetically closest creoles to Lousiana Creoles. The only difference between Louisiana Creoles and French Guianan Creoles would be the different Native American input, since Louisiana Creoles have Native North American admixture, like you said, and French Guianan Creoles have Native South American admixture. To be honest, though, most Louisiana Creoles I've noticed are overwhelmingly black and white, with a minority possessing visible NA influence.

And the moral of this thing called Creole is an ethnic identity of mixed ancestry that definitely includes French, Spanish, African etc. The question is can one be Creole without any African blood?😊
@laeticargo7375
@laeticargo7375 7 жыл бұрын
Of course you have creole without any african Blood: In french, the first meaning for "creole" was someone borned in the tropic islands from european descendants who settled there (by opposition to the non-whites ,recently arrived from Europe and european travellers). For example, the emperor napoleon Bonaparte' s wife Joséphine de Beauharnais was called Creole because borned in caribean islands but 100 % white. The same for the creoles of Louisiana, during the French and Spanish colonizations , the colonial governments were the only one who used the word "creole" and the meaning was: "every person, product or animal borned in the colony." After the sale of Louisiana in 1803, the French speakers start to become identified as Creoles to distinguish themselves from Anglo-saxon. And after the abolition of slavery, like the whites few decades earlier, the former " free man of color" claimed to be Creole. then the french-speaking slaves wanted the creole identity too but the english-speaking black community was much more influential for assimilation . I don't know if you still have white creoles today but at this time yes! and in the beginning the meaning of "creole"wasn't mixed people but more french speaking inhabitants of Louisiana.

Creole is a culture, and phenotype( physical appearance) has not nothing to do with whats in your background, Tyson beckford is very brown so is Naomi Campbell however both are have Asian heritage. I'm creole, and I will say this that its not uncommon for people who are part of a multicultural society to be ashamed of part of their ancestry. In DR the darkest Dominican might say I'm not black.

No one here is in denial of their African Heritage.You obviously are living in the Past.I'm Multi-Racial which means Black and White. I do not intend to deny My White Heritage because You don't feel comfortable with it. You've been programed by White society to label anyone with Black heritage Black .I decide what color I am.If Your grandmother chooses to be black that's her Right,so it's my right to choose who I should identify with.I do not accept the One Drop Rule created by White society

Here We go again, When will it ever stop? No one said Creoles were a Racial Group..We are a Culture and WE are not in denial. please stop reading between the lines.Simply because We want to maintain a separate identity doesn't mean We are in Denial.Let's stop this Anti-Creole hostility.We just want to be Respected for what We really are and nothing more..Why does everybody that hears the Word Creole jump to conclusions? It appears that there is quite a bit of hostility towards Creoles.Why...

First of all I'm creole, that's great and wonderful however not the case for most creoles. I have an uncle who looks Indian as well and cousins who look east Asian. the point is that most creoles are easily distinguishable as part black African. Also you say Hispanic but Hispanics can look like anything Fantasia barrino is Hispanic as is christian milian, lloyd banks, fabulous, Maxwell, Tatiyana ali, Cameron Diaz, christina Aguilera, are all Hispanic.

Do you have Acadian heritage? I recognize Comeaux as a name among the Acadians. I have seen it spelled Comeau. My father was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Both his parents were born in Louisiana. I never knew my father nor his side of the family. I just know that he was mainly of African ancestry with some French and Native American ancestry. Through genetic testing/matches, I found out that my father had some Acadian ancestry. I have some paternal European and Amerindian chromosome segments.

Criollos is Spanish were people of pure Spanish heritage born in the new world. Creole in Louisiana were native inhabitance settled before Lousiana became part of the US. My great-grandmother was Spanish/French/native creole from St. Landry and Acadia parish....Creoles are found throughout the new World (including the caribean)and the Philipines. It is mostly a NEw World phenomenon. I like being diverse too, but I think many people would be suprised of their own diversity.

You are100% correct...Yes indeed Louisiana Creoles basically have the same mixture as those from all the Countries You mentioned and more.... I believe what We are trying to say is that the Native North American admixture makes Us different..The very word Creole defines Our Racial Mix regardless of Country of Origin...If You take out the word Louisiana then We are all of the same Racial Mix. Although many Creoles Are Black and White with very little ad mixture..

I am Black, without a doubt and I have never denied that , but I honor Our Heritage and Identify as a Creole because that's what I am .. You cannot be African American and Creole ...You are either one or another...They are two different lifestyles..You can call Yourself what You want that's not for Me to say but I have that same right .so respect it

The biggest misconception about the term creole is that it means mixed-race. No. "Creole" was never a term to refer to mixed race people, and originally had no racial connotation whatsoever. Creoles were just the people (of any race) native to Louisiana before the lousiana purchase, as opposed to the Americans. Most creoles were white, or black. The mulattos were actually a minority; a fraction of creole society that is being over-stated - they were not more or less "creole" than the whites or the blacks.

You got it all wrong...The Term Creole used in the early 1600's originally referred to Those People that were neither White , Black nor Native American but a Mixture of all of the above thus " Creole "...The very word Creole in Spanish means to Create. This meaning is well documented and is available in The Spanish Archives ... Just where did You get Your information ??

Tritone is right. I'm french and one of the oldest meaning of "créole" in our dictionnary (before the meaning of mixed person), it is someone born in the tropic islands from european descendants who settled there by opposition to the non-whites on one hand but also recently arrived from Europe and european from passage. Concerning the creoles of Louisiana, during the French and Spanish colonizations , the use of the "creole" expression, as adjective was only reserved for the colonial governments to call every person, product or animal been born in the colony. Then,the sale of the french colony of Louisiana in 1803 provoked a cultural division between the French speakers of the colony and the Anglo-saxons. It is from this moment that the former inhabitants of the Louisiana begin to become identified as Creoles to distinguish itself from Anglo-saxon. Also, the expression "créole" in french has evolved and differs according to the territories. So augustinecomeaux , i'm not surprised that you don't know this fact because even the dictionaries of English language do not propose this definition of the Creoles.

@flubno Wake Up...You are living in the Racist past...The Word "Creole" means to "Create".. In Spanish it's pronounced Creer and in Portugese it is Criollo..Historic Verified documents say it was a Word created by the African Slave to distinguish the first Born in the New World from those arriving later..The Europeans later adopted the word to indicate the First Europeans born in the New World..It's a Fact... Now go back and start reading Your History all over again...We know Ours Do You...

@djiet83 Louisiana & Haitian Creoles are separate People.Creoles Brought to Louisiana & Haiti maintained separate Cultures.During the Haitian Revolution thousands of Mixed Race Haitian Creoles fled to New Orleans, Cuba & Porto Rico to escape the Revolution but when they arrived there was a thriving Creole Culture .Some of Our Ancestors are Haitian Creoles.Creoles are throughout the New World. They are not just in Haiti..However the Haitian Creole Language is very similar to Louisiana Creole

A creole has color. a creole is a frenchmen french people are people of color with curly wavy hair, like a caryatid. "creoles that look white are a mixture of english. spain people are people of color and until the 1500s, France and spain had the same name. the one drop of non white made them jump into the "creole group. I am NOT african . I AM French and Native. I am creole. My family had land and farmed. i ate that.

Nonsense. What you're speaking of is specifically Louisiana Creole, so check your lyrics before you get slick out of the mouth. Not all Creoles are from Louisiana. There are Creoles across the Americas, Caribbean, Cape Verde, and Indian Ocean. Educate yourself. Furthermore, Louisiana Creoles are not special, since many people from Martinique, Haiti, and Guadeloupe possess the same exact admixture as most Louisiana Creoles.

I think You got it all turned around...The Original Creoles were the first slaves brought to the New World from West Africa and not the White Creoles ...The name was bestowed on these first slaves by The Portuguese.. The Louisiana Creole Language is an African based Language.. The European Colonist borrowed the Name from these people...I believe You are getting Your info from the Days of Slavery when Creoles of Color were not recognized as a legitimate People.. It's a new day Boss...
