Even before looking at this hand, I knew it would be the famous Culbertson hand that card sharps used in order to swindle poor unsuspecting victims. You can find a description of the bidding and play of this hand in an unusual place: the Ian Fleming James Bond book, “Moonraker”. Bond is South, his boss M is North, and the book/movie’s villain, Sir Hugo Drax, is East. The bidding and play is as described in the above video. Drax had been cheating at cards at Blades, the local gentleman’s club, and M asked Bond to help him do a favor for the club’s manager - to “cheat the cheater”. According to the book, Drax suffered “thirteen separate lashes that no card player would ever lose”. Remember, this scene is only in the book, not in the movie!

Should East have bid differently with that hand?

South was the opening bidder, E doubled [probably thinking he could slaughter the hand], so actually it was W who should have seen it as a forcing bid, and so a sac bid of S or H........ Perhaps.
