Hey Alex, I have a couple of tips for sleeping in the car that may help you. I always found that running the engine and having the heating on full blast for a few minutes before bed time made all the difference throughout the night. I used this trick in the middle of winter up the north of Scotland and stayed warm all night. It may also be worth getting some wind deflectors for the front windows so you can have them opened slightly without any rain getting in, this and some car dehumidifier bags will help with the condensation. I'm sure thousands of people will have already told you but I think it would be really worth it for you to buy a van, even a short wheel base model will provide you so much more room for storage and sleeping in, plus there are a ridiculous number of van conversion videos on youtube that are really helpful. Whatever you decide to do I wish you all the best and will continue watching your journey!

Hi Alex, I've just been on my first car camping trip and will be releasing a video on it soon (on my other channel) - I was in a Skoda Octavia mk2 which with the trim level I have doesn't allow for the rear bench seat to be removed to make a bed so I slept curled up on my side on the fully reclined front passenger seat. I was pretty comfortable actually with a quilt, a blanket and a throw over me. It was 3 degrees Celsius outside but I managed to stay warm mostly. A hot water bottle was a nice touch. I also bought a cheap humidifier box from B&M for about £1.25 which absolutely worked and prevented any condensation at all. I have a USB stick with USB A connector on one side and Micro USB connector on the other side which I loaded with several movies and a few episodes of The Twilight Zone (80s revival). I also had a digital thermometer which allowed me to monitor the cabin temperature. Ran the aircon on hight heat just before bedtime. It took about 25 minutes to raise the temperature from 12 degrees C to 21 degrees. I woke up after about 3 hours as the cabin temperature dropped to 10 but I ran the engine and heating again for 30 minutes and made it nice and warm again before going back to sleep. You might prefer a french press or caffetier (sic) for your coffee, but personally I prefer the coffee from a Moka pot with freshly ground beans, which I preground before setting out. Alcohol wipes (from B&M) and kitchen roll were an amazing addition and allowed me to wash and dry up without water. One thing I would like to say to all car and van campers - if we all resolved to go one better than leave no trace, and actually did some litter picking at the sites we camped at, we might find that we were generally more welcome. My trip was half successful half fail and I came home on the second night as the excellent lay-by I had found earlier in the day, turned out to be the site for a busy kebab van in the evening and I couldn't be doing with that. Enjoyed the vid mate.

A couple of bowls of uncovered rice should help with the condensation issues, the rice will absorb the moisture. It would probably help if you left the front windows open a mm or two as well, won't help with the cold though of course! Use your fishing sleeping bag that well be much better insulated than the duvet
@TheDiner502 жыл бұрын
The rice suggestion is just a waste of food. But cracking the windows and sleeping bag is just a must! No way it would be worse then sleeping in a tent in the mud!

Just before bed do I long walk or exercise , it will help to warm you up. Car camping means you can go anywhere and live in your car with out having to find a hotel. I love car camping in the rain and win, listening to rain on the car is so relaxing, when you are tucked up in bed.🏴🚙
@Adam-fj9px2 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree on forests being atmospheric, especially if they're foggy or dark. One reason your bedding may be going yellow and you being so cold at night is the condensation in your car due to the windows being closed. Just like how it seems weird that you stay warmer with your socks off, you may find you're warmer if you leave a window slightly open. You'll definitely feel it more in summer when it's warmer out but even in winter you might feel a difference, keep it up 👍
@gcarpmad2 жыл бұрын
Keep it up Alex fantastic job. Really like the rustic side of it all. If you leave a small gap in your windows your car won't get as damp as it does. The condensation only builds up because it cannot escape the atmosphere. It will make life more comfortable..

Hello.Just a couple of tips, when sleeping in the car leave a window or two slightly open,this should help with the condensation.Sleep in a sleeping bag in-between your duvet,you will be warmer,and take the legs off your bedside unit and stick a couple of velcrove strips on the bottom,this will stop it from falling over and give you more height on top.Great videos,All the best young man. 🎣😎👍

Really hard to get a good night's sleep when you're freezing. Will get better when weather warms up. :) Re: condensation - it's attracted to the coldest surface (eg windows). So when you drive off, heat the car on full blast to atomize the moisture, then wind down the windows so the moisture escapes to the colder outside air. Keep doing that through the morning.

Hat of for doing this but I now love my rooftop tent on top of my classic 1987 Landcruiser LJ70 even more than I did. Convenient, room for more than 1 (without having to sleep inside eachother) opens up possebileties for all kinds of things. I drag my boat behind this thing and can go fishing just about anywhere. And the offroady landcruiser can go just about anywhere you point it and will set you up with camping grounds that truly is lovely.

Vans are on the expensive side and sought after at the moment, I know, I have two, one for my business and a Combo which is my private vehicle. The insurance is expensive on vans too, they get targeted by thieves a lot and tools get nicked from them, insurance firms consider them quite high risk

When i was traveling, I ran into a handful of guides/outdoorsmen that gave me the same advice, If your in a sleeping bag in the cold/mountains its best to sleep naked. Due to your cloths causing an insulated air pocket so your body heats the air between you and the cloths, but if you slept nude that insulation airpocket is much greater, resulting in your body warming a 4in layer of air insulation. I studied architecture, so we use airpockets in housing to keep homes warmer and dry. So in my head it makes sense in a sleeping bag.

Been car camping in a kia rio for a few years now, some hints, make some vents that fit into the window channel or get the nets that go over the window and keep the windows down a bit, that will reduce the condensation in the car massively. After a few trip you learn really quick what you need and don't need. Make sure you have a good dc/dc charger on your extra battery and make sure it doesn't drain your car battery. Don't be afraid to change your in car storage a lot, sometimes crazy ideas work when you have limited space. Also, get a roof rack and a luggage carrier or roof box and put your camp chairs and stuff up there. Good luck from Aus

Everyone is saying get a van, but there are tons of youtubers doing this in a van, i like this version, it is different and you are learning everyday what is right and what is wrong and improve the things which are not suitable and you will very soon figure things out to get yourself comfortable in that small car and that would be something special and a motivation for other people as well which are planing to do a journey like this as well, not everyone can afford a van and the costs to put everything in it, but this thing like you are doing it right now is a possibility for everyone wishing to do a journey like that and i am sure very soon as you learn on the way, it will get more interesting and also comfortable

Good stuff Alex. Your filming is ace, love the cinematic shots you capture of the scenery. I remember seeing a video online of a lady who lived in her car. She had made some foam inserts/covers for all of the windows on her car. I think she used sticky backed velcro strips to attach them at night. Would probably massively help with heat retention/condensation and offer some privacy.

Awesome as always mate. I think the word you were looking for when describing the feeling in a forest is "Tranquil". Where I live I am lucky to have forest all around. It is a blessing when you are stressed to just take a walk and soak up all that natural, calm atmosphere. As for the car condensation Please Don't wipe your heated rear window up and down. The elements are very fragile (basically just paint) and will damage very easily. If you are going to wipe it just use a soft cloth (microfibre) and wipe horizontally with the lines of the elements or better still don't wipe it at all. Great video and brilliant content. Keep up the good work mate.👍

I've used them my whole life and can genuinely say no matter how cold the floor is, I sleep as well if not better than in my own bed. You can pick them up on eBay for around £40 pounds. Also get in the bag and then get naked, sounds dumb but your actually allowing your body heat to warm the bag this way. Sleeping fully clothed saps the warmth from your body over time. Hey Alex. First off I think you parked up in a passing area of the road. Good job it looked like a quiet road. But I have the following suggestions for you. Get yourself two large hot water bottles. For the following reasons. You can heat the water in your kettle (not to boiling point) and they will help keep you a warm, especially if you put one in the bed shortly before climbing in. Secondly having two means if you damage one, you have a back up. Thirdly if you have an injury you can use one as a heat pack & the other as a cool pack. Finally you can store the water for your hot water bottles in them if you are afraid of using up your drinking/cooking water. I would also recommend a sleeping bag. As a fisherman (women) I was given by my partner a camp bed that has a removable all season sleeping bag. A sleeping bag will help with keeping you warm better because your body heat will be captured inside it better than a duvet. The less layers you wear the better apparently. And if you plan to sleep in your car, keeping the windows open a small amount, will help keep the air fresher & reduce the amount of condensation which can happen because of the heat escaping from your body as well as the heat & moisture that escapes from your breathing. The last thing I would like to suggest is if you start feeling like continuing in your car is too much of a problem, then look for a cheap combo van. You could chuck a mattress in there & there would be plenty of room for you bedside table. Lastly you have me so jealous & really hungry after watching you with your Wagyu steak. I really hope you are having a great time though.

Hey Alex I lifed for 6 month in my car full time in the UK there's definitely some easy improvement that you have a better night sleep Get yourself to b&q and get some thin underlay the silver one and cut out the shape of your Windows and put them in from the inside to keep warmth in and light out also get two front window coverings for windscreen and back window that should definitely help with sleep and insolation

I had a lot of fun watching, thank you and I will wait for a similar adventure in Poland in May when it is warm, I do not want to sleep on a cold night, maybe I would advise an electric blanket on a usb and please keep playing, I will be doing something similar, so I watch freedom for a while . I wonder if the google translator works well

A good quality sleeping bag would be superior to your duvet. Both for warmth and repelling damp issues. Also much more compact. Good bags are water repellent (especially synthetic filled ones) and keeping the damp out of your sleeping set up will keep you warmer. Love the videos. Keep them coming 👍

Hey Alex, just a tip on using knives, if you're scraping product off of a board, use the spine, not the edge. Scraping with the edge can and will cause edge rolling and your knife will dull quicker. Especially knives with a thinner apex, they'll roll fairly easily. As always, love the content! Keep em coming.

Add a roof box to pack more stuff in. We did this when we went "car camping" for 2 weeks and put in a bed instead of seats in the back of the car. (We did have a Crystler Voyager at the time though so loads more space...)
