Clever O-ring modification, Pete. In the absence of rotational stress, while being under lateral compression, I would guess that it will last a long time. My grandfather would have said of you: "now there's a guy who can walk and chew gum at the same time". He would be 120 years old, and that would have been a heck of a compliment. Well deserved, I might add.

I miss the time I was able to do serious wrenching. My hands have fallen victim to arthritis it’s so frustrating when I can’t hold a part or tool like I use to. As long as the repair is easy for me to get at I can still do it. I found my grandson likes to join in and with his small hands he can reach where I never could. It’s a joy answering his questions and he’s got grandpas approval to get dirty. I enjoy your mechanic videos as well as the interaction with the animals. Good day

The company I worked for bought O Ring material on a spool. We cut the new material to length, super glue together and install. I can’t remember one leaking after it was changed out. It was a 24/7 operation facility, so they were tested for thousands of hours.

The Classic ending; at the video end you grab the greased rag out of the back pocket at start cleaning the grease between your fingers while saying," Hope you enjoyed the tear down and re-build of the tractor axle." Like a surgeon proud of his work as his assistant closes up the incision. Really good video of the recovery of and old tractor.

50 years ago as a young farmer in SD my 2640 JD had a bad oil seal. It was winter and the JD was my heavy loader tractor. There was o my about 6" of snow on the ground but more coming. I had a Bobcat 310 and a broken leg, cast from heel to hip. By squeezing back on the seat to miss the bucket as it went up I could grab the wheel (filled with fluid, of course) and drag it back. The Bobcat was too light to lift it - two wheels only. Drop the wheel, hook on the axis housing and remove that, sliding off to lay under the tractor on the snowy ground while taking out the axell housing bolts. Replace the seals, reverse the process and feed the sheep. The things we do for love!

Great video, Pete. Reminds me of working on cars with my dad. Which is what led me to be a diesel mechanic for the past 14 years. A suggestion for cutting o-rings is to cut them on a 45° so there is more surface area when gluing it back.

When you buy an o ring kit you get a razor blade superglue and various sizes of bulk rings, I carried 3 set at all times in my service truck, mostly worked on Caterpillar!
@ralfie8801 Жыл бұрын
When I worked at a sand and gravel pit, some of the machines had o rings in the planetary hubs that sealed the covers. They were about 1/8” cross sectional diameter and fit about a 20” diameter groove in the hub. We bought the o ring material in 50’ long strings and cut them to length and glued them together. I’m not sure what kind of adhesive we used, but it was probably some sort of industrial super glue, this was in the mid 1980’s and before super glue was widely available if I remember correctly. The main thing was we cut the o ring material on about a 30 degree angle instead of on a 90 so that there was a lot more surface being glued together and made a stronger joint.

Working on old tractors or any old thing teaches you things often don't always go to plan, just like real life really! Ah! the test drive. be it an old tractor, an old car or truck, there is nothing like a test drive after some work! It's extremely satisfying after all the work. Yes, I have been forced to do the super glue trick on o'rings before. I was remembered some years ago that there was a "custom" o'ring kit that use to be available which was literally lengths of o'ring rubber, a blade & a tube of super glue. I do the same for door seal rubbers & any other rubber joint/seal that has to be custom made for our old gear!

That helix coil brought back some memories. In the late 60s I worked at Martin Marietta missile plant and my job was screwing helicoilsinto the second stage guidance system box. Don’t remember exactly how many, but there were several dozen and fishing that broken tang out of the hole was a trick. specs called for a grease like substance to be applied to the heli coil which then made it very difficult to remove. Didn’t work there very long, but it was a great experience. You are very enjoyable to watch work.

Hey Pete, glad to see Milwaukee came through with the repairs. We live just10 minutes from the Milwaukee Tool repair shop. Makes things nice for me. I had to laugh when you brought out your simplex screw jack. I've got three just like it and use them more often than you would think. I'm busy everyday with rebuilding old trucks, home and property maintenance and remodeling and like you, I mostly work alone. I can usually figure out a way to get the job done by myself. I have a brother who lives close and will come at the drop of a hat but he's as stubborn as I am and always thinks his way is better. Ha! A seal driving kit would have to have about 1,000 options for all the unique projects you do. Careful and steady gets the job done. Thanks

I had a similar issue with a float bowl gasket on a neighbors generator. After I cleaned the carb I could not get the swollen gasket to fit. So I read on line that if you boil the o-ring for about 10 to 20 seconds it will clean off the gas and carb cleaner to shrink it back to shape. It worked perfectly. Hope it helps somebody. Good feeling when somethings fixed! I’m sure you know, but my cousin had a dairy farm with quite a few old tractors, and he had an O-ring making kit.
