What a race this turned out to be!
Thanks Morgan for bringing out the best in me.
I re-live the whole experience and speak through the thoughts that ran through my mind.
This is how I mentally break down a 5k;
1st km: Active warm-up. Control that adrenaline.
2nd and 3rd km: Requires focus. Sets the tone for the rest of the race.
4th KM: The hardest and normally the slowest of them all! GRIND!
Last km: ALL YOU GOT!
I hope this video helps if you if you have shorter race and need to block out those demons when the going gets tough.
BOOM SHAKALAKA!

To a veteran (age 65) masters competitor like me, this is a thrilling and highly educational video. My 5K PR as a mid-20-something was 17:27, so I never got to experience the vibe up front, as it were. For that reason alone, you've gifted an Old Guy with a front-row seat, and I thank you for that. But I love your stream-of-consciousness narration, which resonates strongly, I'm sure, with many of us who love competition, at whatever speed, and are canny enough to keep our powder dry for the moment when we make our move. I was amazed, frankly, when you left your young competitor in the dust at the beginning of mile 3. His stride was fantastic, as you noted. Yours is serviceable. But here, too, you taught us something, which is that the "right" body, the "right" stride, isn't the only thing that counts. Training counts; heart counts; racing strategy counts. Please continue! This is inspiring.
@simplelyrics7657

Morgan’s stride is wild, the way his feet fly back and tuck so close to his butt on the way forward compared to Nick’s which doesn’t go quite as high on the follow through. Still both great strides, my personal stride is more like Nick’s with the tighter stride.
@TheLoneCamper
@TheLoneCamper 10 ай бұрын
Not sure which is which, but #4 seems to be overstriding and is far above 180 steps per minute, the idea cadence. I bet he'd shave off even more time if he got closer to this ideal cadence. Also, extremely impressive!

Fellow runner here. In my mind the most beautiful part of running is when someone with supreme conditioning and ability makes it look absolutely effortless.. But when I'm in the race, I'm disgusted by them - in my mind I can accept people being better runners than me, being able to go farther / quicker... what I struggle with is how easy they make it look! They should have at least some of my breathlessness and pain 😂😂

Great video. I really appreciated you recounting all of your interior conversations with yourself. When things get tough in a race it sometimes feels like there are two voices speaking to you, one saying "this is too hard", the other saying "dont give up".
