Ever since I was a kid, the idea of using a device to propel one's self higher and faster than normal was always exciting to me. And it got me thinking...
From TF2 Rocket Jumping to Raze Satchel Jumps, what exactly is it that makes explosive jumping so addictive- so satisfying? Well as a man of science I figured it’s my duty to answer this question. And after many hours of grueling research, scouring the web for answers, I’ve finally figured it out and broken it down into a 10 minute video essay for your viewing pleasure!

It's interesting that there are mechanics like Pharah and Junkrat jumps in Overwatch that are so limited when Lucio exists in the same game. He hits all 4 of the requirements really well in my opinion (taking them as requirements for general movement tech rather than just rocket jumping). He's one of the main reasons I play the game at all, the wall riding is just so fun and satisfying.

For overwatch I think the most addictive movement mechanic is Lucio without a doubt. Since he uses the walls around him it can be used in so many different ways and even after playing him for a while there’s a lot left to be desired in my movement compared to some other players. there are also studios maps in the game made by players that test your level for maneuvering around a map. In Junkrat's defense (as someone who has several thousand hours on him): his movement is clunky at first, and I won't deny that it's janky AF, but once you learn it properly you can do some crazy things and it becomes quite fun. My favorite example is a jump on Nepal Sanctum. You can utilize four mines to do a kind of neo jump around the entire map boundary, going from your spawn to the enemy spawn right as they enter the building, allowing for a devastating flank. Basic tutorial: Throw one mine at the top left corner of the spawn door, then wait for the cooldown while the match is starting. As the ramp reaches about 15 degrees, jump forwards and right, detonating the mine as you pass over the top line of the door. Face the corner of the sanctum and immediately throw a second mine directly behind you and detonate it ~0.5 seconds after it's out. Wait four seconds, then throw a mine directly back, detonating it as soon as it's out. You have to be almost frame perfect on this one to get enough distance. As soon as it comes off cooldown (should be ~3.5 seconds if you timed everything right), throw another mine in front of you and right, then detonate it as it completes its first revolution (about 0.3 seconds). That will shift your momentum dramatically, sending you at a 90 degree angle into the enemy courtyard. The rollout takes ~10 seconds from doors opening to landing, which happens to be the same time most teams will reach the little enclosure in front of the sanctum. This is perfect, because they'll be grouped up in a predictable position, facing away from you, and not expecting you to be there. Ideal situation for Junkrat to cause havoc. I've gotten several team kills with this, although more often than not you'll only end up making a 2-1 trade, heavily damaging the rest of the team, and identifying their comp early, which is still basically a guaranteed first fight win if you've got a competent team. Unless they have a fucking baptiste, in which case you might as well just jump in the pit and be done with it.

That's the thing for me. It's a good video and really interesting, but for overwatch specifically if you gave Junk & Phara control the way he's saying: distance, & speed. Would absolutely make the characters "too good". A good pharah or junk is already tough, almost untouchable sometimes. But thats the thing, sometimes. Their limitations in movement give them balance in a game that's already busy enough visually and mentally.

The deceleration rate in OW can be altered and it currently exists on Lucio. I feel like there shouldn't be a deceleration rate at all. Imagine Cassidy rolling off an edge and maintaining that momentum until he lands, or Soldier 76 jumping out of sprint and maintaining that momentum until he lands. Pharah and Junkrat would benefit so much from maintaining velocity at a cost of losing health from jumps and having some of their kit reworked. I hate how OW handles this, but I also love Lucio's movement. Terrific video by the way.

Man, imagine an Overwatch where Pharah's jump jets launch her in the direction she's looking, and Junkrat's mines blast him directly away rather than just up.

Pharah has a "real" rocket jump. There's a somewhat more skilled rocket jump you can do as pharah where you you shoot a missile downward, fall onto it, and then activate jump jet at the same time that the missile explodes. It is still limited to her jump jet's set vertical angle, but drastically increases her velocity. Pretty much every pharah player uses this constantly.

Another example of explosive jumps is windbombing in Zelda Breath of the Wild. It's a glitch and not an intended mechanic, but still super fun to do.

you can do a horizontal explosive jump as junkrat if you jump and wait until you are falling downwards, to blow the mine up. I think you downwards velocity cancels out some of the upwards velocity. You can jumpscare people with this very easily, but when that is said even though you are not as easy of a target as you would be if you just blew up your mine as you were going up in your jump or god forbid while you are at the apex of your jump, due to the amazing and wonderful overwatch game engine (or whatever it is), you are still left hanging in the air for a little while as free pickings for and character like hanzo, widow, or ashe. This is why you have to make sure that your target is unaware of your whereabouts at all times upping the jumpscare facter significantly. You can achieve this by simply dedicating alotted periods of time to just jumping around randomly and maybe spam choke, from wherever you might have ended up, a little, and you enemies will subconsciously being considering you to not be a threat to them, at which point you can position yourself to do a horizontal jump directly into their support and double donking at least one, before you make your escape and do it all over. Note if you decide to avoid being detected by your enemies by crouch walking around the map, you will almost without fail bring dishonor and disgrace upon yourself, as a result of this cowardly act.

I don't see anyone talking about how FUCKING SMOOTH the transition from practice to real gameplay at 1:52 is, as well how visually relevant it is to the topic at hand of practicing something and then putting it into a real game. That must have been a lot of work just to get that to work, let alone basically frame perfect. Huge props dude. Edit: holy fucking shit the entire video is that good too subbed. amazing informational video that is consistently visually and audibly interesting.

As a Pharah main in Overwatch since 2016, you have no idea how satisfying it was when Wrecking Ball launched years later, with actual movement techs, velocity that carries over, and one of the highest skill caps in the game. Movement is so fun in video games, and Ball's whole kit is dependent entirely on how well he can move and retain speed. He just feels like such a step up from every other character except maybe Lucio.

I think Overwatch explosives physics are like this because blizzard wanted the game to feel *VERY* easy to pick up and play for begginers and different from the predecessors of the mechanic. They wanted it to be unique and favour those who don't know how to use the mechanic properly. It might be a bold thing you say, but if YOU had just discovered explosive jumping, it would be the only game you enjoyed it in, for you couldn't use it to your advantage in other games. tough, I agree that the "mines thrown upwards are making you fly upwards upon detonation" is crazy and the whole thing feels dull because you need 0 IQ and positional skill to use and you can't really improve in it. You barely even have to learn anything when it comes to junkrat mines, even less when it comes to phara jetpack.

IMO, having skill-based movement isn't a very high priority. That is: us lower-skill players who still like to go fast don't do well with things like rocket jumps. Now, I don't mind having a high skill ceiling, but a low enough skill floor so it's not frustrating, but I never feel confident with rocket jumps.

I know this video is super old but doomfist movement (and wrecking ball) is pretty neat its got its own pretty unintuitive ruleset, but once you figure out bouncing and stuff its hard to look at any map again and not wonder how you can bounce off of any corner in the game its no rocket jumping but its pretty cool

As an overwatch player I really can’t deny most characters have BORING movement, the only exceptions I make would be lucio and wrecking ball, with lucio you can choose to look down and do a fast wall jump or look up and gain height with it, WHERE is that nuance with junkrats mines, or pharahs propulsion blast? And why do I lose all momentum the second moiras fade, or doomfists rocket punch ends?

Yeah uhh... if you do Ultrakill you'll want to make a dedicated video or section since it blurs the line between movement tech and exploits to the point the exploits become movement tech and movement tech becomes exploits. I'm nowhere near the top of that skill ceiling but it's fun to slowly learn more of it.

As an overwatch player, i agree with the junkrat take, but with phara you have 2 ways of rocket jump (the e, and the primary fire) and you chose to talk about the jetpack as a rocket jump, why? thats dumb, just talk about the rocket jump not the thing that is not a rocket jump as if it was the rocket jump Also soldier, zarya and bastion all have small rocket jumps that you can make if you want to want to talk about them but they are smaller than the other two so is understandable if you dont.

paladins has recently removed in air inaccuracy and given more control of air movement (like 2 months ago) and already features some interesting movement techs with some of their characters. I believe their player count almost doubled when they put in this change among others. could be really interesting to dissect especially how similar it is to ow.
