It's bigger than the SKX but because its case back sits flatter on the wrist the bracelet doesn't have to be cinched down as much to keep the watch from moving. That's an advantage to quartz watches that is seldom talked about. The SKX is top-heavy so it tends to rotate on the wrist.

I have this watch on a navy blue Alphashark NATO with brushed hardware from BluShark. My wrist is around 6.5" and it works for me. I like watches with wrist presence but I could see someone with a similar wrist size not necessary liking it. If I have any gripes about it, it would be that the bezel seems a bit loose, and the stock bracelet looks a bit gaudy to me. Looks fabulous on the blue NATO though! I like to wear this as a "grab and go" watch in summer or matched with a blue shirt.

Thks for comparing to the SKX007. Have been looking for a review like this.
@jacknjill30002 жыл бұрын
I have a small wrist and was considering a used SKX 013 and the smaller brother of the SKX 007. But the cost of them used in the $300. to $450. range was a bit mimics for a used watch. Plus when you buy one used from eBay, there’s no warranty for it being still being dive safe. Meaning, to dive with a used SKX, you have to spend more money having it serviced and bringing your used SKX cost way way high. So since I’m still new with Seiko watches, I’m learning all the different models. I was looking at the 4th. gen. Seiko Monster on KZbin and think it looked too big or chunky, so now considering this one.

I've noticed solar watches tend to be on the large side. To make room on the dial for the sensor, maybe?

I don’t think that is a factor. My wife has a 25mm diameter Seiko solar watch. I think the sizes are just driven by the designers perception of style trends.

I love the watch - mine is extremely accurate - +2 seconds after one week. My only dislike was the appearance of the stock Seiko bracelet - in my opinion the shiny (polished) center section looks cheap. I finally got brave and put a Scotch brite pad to work. After about 15 minutes of rubbing the entire bravely now appears to be brushed stainless - looks great.
@JustBlueFish7 жыл бұрын
I don't mind the polished center links myself, but I bet it looks good completely brushed as well. You can always polish them right back up if you change your mind so not a bad idea to try it out. Glad to hear you're enjoying it.

It would be helpful when side-by-side comparing watches, just have a digital caliper and measure on camera, while talking, rather than saying "I think the cases are about the same thickness." The apparent crystal face size may be near identical to the 007, with wider bezel creating the larger overall size, but don't guess. Subjective terms, like "more robust", don't follow from just being bigger. My 007 is 13.6mm thick, to make room for self-winding weight, but the far greater issue is my current fiasco involving service. Regrettably now, having dealt with a local jeweler, I had previously believed worked in house - when I dropped mine off was told it was sent out; I consented, without full thought of the possibilities, and after a couple telephone confirmations for parts, after a month had my like new 007, minus $330. Except, that it does not run. I believe the self-winding mainspring was overlubed, which can cause slipping before a full spring tension is reached. I can rotate it a hundred times, and randomly get a couple hours, or only five minutes, then it stops. Can't run it long enough to judge overall accuracy, versus the winding issue, and will be having a talk tomorrow with the dealer. FWIW, know that the official Seiko U.S. service site charges like $186, and the fact that reliable local repair shops capable of competent work on such watches are extinct, I would never again trust any mechanical watch to a non-factory facility. My second-hand old Wenger Swiss Army quartz, basic mineral crystal and weak lume, yet 200m rated, stays within 5 seconds a month. DIY battery every couple years. Just be honest, in asking yourself, "What am I really wanting to get out of this purchase?"

Scratches on the bracelet just add to the patina. There's nothing as cool as a very old watch that's still working but showing it's age a little. Scratches on the crystal aren't cool though.
@jefferyneu39154 жыл бұрын
I will never again have a quartz diver that is not solar. Battery changes are too expensive because of the pressure testing. Solar quartz divers that are well made are low maintenance. That’s a nice bonus in my eyes. I wear a wetsuit for nearly all diving. Even in fairly warm diving, after a week or so of diving several hours/day, I get cold. When we go on dive trips, we can be underwater several hours a day. Eat, dive, sleep is our dive trip behavior.

Generally a quartz watch will last much longer than a mechanical. I have a Seiko from 1985 that works perfectly, with just a battery change from time to time. The unknown for me is the solar charger and power cell. Are those made to last? I’m not sure.

Think about the cost of services every 5 or 7 years to keep automatics in order and you'll realize a solar powered is cheaper to maintain, the accumulator cell can last 20-25 years without replacement, even if you are unlucky and it only lasts 15 years you'll save money. I have several automatics but they need maintenance and are expensive on the long run. By the way, I have this solar PADI edition and I'm very satisfied with it.

Perico De Lospalotes I went for the seiko starfish (sne109). Loved it so much that I thought, if it wasn't orange - it would be fine for the "formal" occasion for someone like me - I'm not the rolex wearing type. Bought an SNE107 as well. Both work beautifully and even though I switch watches from time to time, the 109 (i.e. orange) is my "daily beater" and gets far more use. The thing is that being solar-quartz means that i don't have to set the 107 (i.e. grey/black sunburst) - i just put it on and go.

@JustBlueFish7 жыл бұрын
Tough call, both are cool. Do you want the convenience of not having to worry about keeping the watch wound up and running? The solar is nice in that regard, just make sure it gets some light from time to time and it will always be running when you pick it up. Automatics are less accurate at keeping time as well. But Auto's are fun and the PADI Pepsi automatic is nice looking.
