In my opinion the LL Bean (which I believe is from the early 1980's) is the best of these. I prefer its size better. Many watches today are way to big and look clunky. My interest in watches began with old black and white movies from the 1930's on. Frequently in those movies as part of the plot someone looks at their watch, or you see a character just wearing a watch. The style and size never over powers the wrists, giving an understated look with proper proportion. In the 1970's huge tablecloth size ties were in style and looked horrible. Whenever something we wear becomes overs sized it ruins its look. Just my view. not worth a dime.
@nerychristian11 ай бұрын
The thing is, most modern watches are a lot more expensive and better finished than their vintage predecessors. When you pay a lot of money for a watch, you want it to be large enough so that it is more visible. I know that when I wear my watches, I like to be able to see the time at a glance. I also buy watches with beautiful dials. So I want to be able to notice all the nice details of the dial. That's harder to do with a smaller watch. When most people wore suits to work, or dressed more nicely on the weekends, it made sense to have smaller watches, so that the watch could fit under a dress shirt. But since we now live in a very casual society, and most people wear tshirts, it makes more sense to have watches with larger dimensions. Most men no longer wear jewelry, so the watch has become the new jewelry, and you want it to be noticed. For me, 38mm-39mm is the sweet spot.
@barryfleischer655311 ай бұрын
@@nerychristian Perfectly said! I still do believe in my case anyway that my watch shouldn't have more charisma than me.
@nerychristian11 ай бұрын
@@barryfleischer6553 I agree. Even though I prefer watches that are between 38mm and 39mm, I make sure to buy watches that have clean, simple dials, that are not too ostentatious. My favorite watches in my collection are the Seiko SJE089, and the SJE093. Their designs are based on vintage watches. My favorite watches are dress watches that have a classy and timeless look, without too much stuff going on the dial.

What is the accuracy of yours? Thanks

Rp Mcmurphy Thanks for the reply and advice. What worries me is that the accuracy seems to be getting worse with time but I know that having the watch mostly in the watch case does not help.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Hamilton’s Accuracy spec is -10 to +15 seconds per day, according to the faq on their website. You’re well within specifications at +11. You also have to keep in mind that sitting it in one position and timing it isn’t the best method. It will keep different time in the wrist, and that’s what matters. Wear it for 5 days and see what it averages per day. If it’s worse than the accuracy in the static position I would maybe have it looked at.

A note on the ‘fauxtina’ issue. The original 33mm Khaki fields did NOT have white lume originally which has turned yellow over time - it was an off-white shade of cream to begin with, not unlike the modern Khaki field. We know this because we have evidence of new old stock (NOS) Khaki fields from the 60s and 70s which have never been exposed to sunlight, but still have creamy yellow lume. Yes the passage of time makes it slightly darker, but that’s all. There are also photo advertisements showing creamy lume on the originals.

Do you think that watch designers will ever design watches with small diameters like the vintage Hamilton Khaki Field you showed us today? And what is the purpose of a small dial? Or is it just a matter of fashion? I would say that a small watch is more difficult to make than a bigger one. From that perspective it is yet more suprising that they made smaller watches in the old days than they do now. I think that 42 mm watches were hardly available in the fifties, sixties and seventies? Can you tell something about thus development?
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I don’t think designers will go back towards the trend of vintage sized smaller watches. At least not anytime soon. Style does change and often times things that went out of style come back in style, but I don’t expect that to happen with watches anytime soon.

Have a look at a thread on Watchuseek about WR. It's called "Sigh... Myth Busting Again". As long as your watch has been checked to be really water resistant, you shouldn't worry about anything, even with a 30m watch.
@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски5 жыл бұрын
@@MPD90 Exactly. You get my point. It has nothing to do with the ratings and all to do with whether the seals and gaskets function properly. Yes, your diver's watch will be factory tested, but don't you think it's ridiculous to worry so much about a bit of water ? It says 30m, then it has to be waterproof. I don't care what some overcautious people say, if it says 30m it's either resistant to 30m or the manufacturer is lying. Simple, no ?
@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски5 жыл бұрын
@@MPD90 Then why do they rate them to this depth ? Don't you think it would be somewhat dishonest ? And my point was that your seals and the structural integrity of your watch are the elements that guarantee its water resistance. There have been divers failing in the hot tub as well as Timex Ironmen being worn without breaking a sweat on divers' wrists. Have a look at the way your watch is built. Have a look a the caseback, at its crown. This is what allows your watch to be water resistant. Who cares that my Vostok was rated to 2 atm ? It had a threaded crown and a screw down caseback. It worked well and you could swim flawlessly with it.

I thanks for your super cool video! I would like to find the same pre 2018 version but without the date, is it possible ? Because I like on this version the kind of grey color of the brushed case. And I like the facto that the hands are not fake yellow patina ! But I don’t like the date that much. This is why i am looking for an Hamilton without these yellow hands color, without the date and with that kind of brushed color ! Thanks for your help

One thing that throws me off the automatic is the 21600 beat rate of the H10 movement. The mechanical watches are 28800.
@JustBlueFish5 жыл бұрын
I don’t mind it. I can barely tell a difference. And the lower best rate has some upside.
@axelthorpe5 жыл бұрын
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews I have an ETA and a Selitta now, and they are much smoother than the Seiko I had before, or at least I really like the ETA/Selitta sweep. Still the 80h power reserve of the H10 is really useful.

I am looking new field watch to replace mine 17 years old QQ sweet sixteen gift watch. I am 33 and i am not collector, but i found Hamilton Khaki field watch of 38mm would look solid for my age and i could wear it everyday :) Price and futures and look i think is well balanced.

I bought my Auto the other way around, bought it with the black leather strap and then a few months later ordered the stainless bracelet for it. Swap them depending on my mood, or of it's warm put a Nato on it.

It's good to have both options!

Great video Guy, not sure how I missed this one but glad to see it even late! The automatic looks so much bigger than the 38MM mechanical, must be the polished bezel, less crowded dial and big endlinks on the bracelet!
@JustBlueFish5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I would say in person the auto looks a little bigger, probably because of the bracelet, but it doesn’t feel “big”... if that makes sense.

I'm wavering between the Khaki Field Mechanical and the Khaki Field Automatic, and I'm wondering which one is more resistant to scratches as an everyday watch.
@bi50484 жыл бұрын
I bought the pre 2018 mechanical one back in 2002-2003 ish and love it. It also came with the bracelet. My everyday watch until 2017 when the winding mechanism stop. Most probably the spring broken (?) but not sure.

Curved sapphire on a dark dial is a no-no for me - I can't be doing with the reflections - I'd take hardlex or acrylic over sapphire in this case. Better yet flat sapphire or boxed sapphire. I really like the LL Bean. I've got a Russian watch from the 70-s that looks similar and is 31mm and love it.

The "fauxtina" doesn't bother me much. It isn't as strong as on some other watches (e.g. a Steinhart one, the Ocean Vintage Military if I'm not mistaken). And I also have the brown, "tropical" dial. It has more or less the same versatility as the black dial, it's a rarer colour and I like it a lot.

Do you know whether the current LL Bean field watch is made by Hamilton? Or did LL Bean go with another manufacturer? Great vid. Keep at it!

I have a new Hamilton khaki field automatic . It is a sharp looking watch. I love it. My cheap Timex expedition watch looks just as good as those other watches . It is my travel and beater watch . It only cost me $50 lol

I like them all but would go for the auto version. I also usually like getting watches on their bracelets but the gap after the end links really bothers me. I also don’t like that the center links are split down the middle.

Nice video! I appreciate the close up comparisons of the different models. I’m glad the pre-2018 version is still available in 2023 (even though Hammy nerfed the movement beat rate to extend the power reserve). That’s the one I went with. Cleaner dial that’s easier to read and the date is handy. Plus, the green is a killer color, even if it’s a less accurate to the original Army issue watches. I love how wafer thin it is! You’re right that all these watches rock.

This was a great video, very helpful and thorough. Something I think would have made it even better would be if you had included the 38mm auto version, with silver dial and stainless bracelet.

So it's a year later and the pre-2018 mechanical is still available. They call it the "Officer's" field watch to distinguish it from the new one, which I think is cool. This is the one I just picked up, with the green face. Thanks.
