If you're searching for an automatic watch under $500 that's versatile for everyday wear but tough enough for whatever life throws at you, then this video is for you!
After divers, the second best choice to cover these needs is classically styled field watches. Today we compare a trusted channel favorite with a new watch on the block from Seiko for 2021. We're talking about the Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic (H70455533) vs the Seiko SRPG27.
How do they compare? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What inspired their designs? Does Seiko remain king of the entry level or are those days coming to an end? And which of these watches would I ultimately choose? It's time to find out!

At the beginning of Covid I lost my job. I spent many hours researching the watch I would purchase for myself once I landed back on my feet and the Hamilton Khaki Field on a bracelet was my choice. It was affordable enough that It wasn't an irresponsible purchase for somebody in a tricky financial situation, but at the same time substantial enough that I knew I would be happy with it years down the road. Nearly 4 months later it hasn't left my wrist and I still enjoy it every time I put it on.

I recently got the seiko srpg29. It’s subjective but I find the finish, the domed crystal brushed numbers, the frosted deep blue dial and general refinement for the price outstanding. It doesn’t try to be a Rolex or any other watch but beats to the march of its own horological drum.

I've got the exact same one. I don't mind the weight nor size of it. It catches the light in nice ways, in general I like it a lot. But, my biggest nay on it is the scratch I now have to look at due to the hardlex. Maybe sapphire wouldn't have saved it, but it nags the mind that it could've.

Disagree, the Seiko is half the price, bracelet (variable quality I know), day complication, movement can be serviced, and regulated almost anywhere. Now if you’re talking of the previous Khaki auto with the 2824-2 movement the Hamilton wins on servicing and smooth sweep etc. 80hrs reserve isn’t really a thing is it? So you wear your watch mon to Friday and wear something nicer on the weekend and put it back on Monday without having to go to the strenuous and very difficult task of re setting again on Monday……….so the weekend watch has to have a 120hr reserve otherwise you have the monumental chore of setting that every weekend! Looks like you’ll be wearing an Oris on the weekend, and the Hamilton on the week. Hmmm……….

Had the Hamilton Khaki 38 Auto. Sold it. Now have an SRPG27. For my 7” wrist, the 38mm Hamilton Khaki wears way to small. However, thanks to its ridiculously long lugs, the 42mm is ghastly. The 40mm SRPG27 is far better proportioned for average wrist sizes. If you have small wrists, the 38mm Khaki will fit you better. If you have huge wrists, the 42mm Khaki will fit better. But for those of us with 7-7.5” wrists, the 40mm SRPG27 is the sweet spot.

I love these video's of yours. The combination of history, the editing, the pleasant voice-over and the enthusiasm are stellar. Appreciate you making these. Here, I also give the nod to the Hammie because of the sapphire. In all fairness, the previous Seiko 5 BigMil also started at an MRSP of 200 Euro's, and Seiko's sink in price. That said, they did indeed cock up the design of the Seiko by making it super thick. That even turned me off the modern 1959 Alpinist. As far as history goes, Hamilton / Buren / Heuer were also working together on the 1969 race towards the first automatic chronograph, which pitted them against Zenith and Seiko respectively. The photo finish that this resulted in still causes debate over who actually delivered the first automatic chronograph. Hamilton was also behind the Pulsar, the first LED quartz watch, worn by presidents, hobnobs and famous folks alike, and which sparked the 1970's LED watch craze. I'm an enormous Seiko fanboi, but they really need to shave 2mm off those Seiko's and pop a sapphire crystal on there. 11mm for a field watch, like the old SNZG11J1 I had, is fantastic, but 13mm for a simple three hander is poppycock.

I have the 42mm version of the Hamilton Khaki Field and it is absolutely one of my favorites. I currently have it on a NATO strap, which offsets the increased weight of the 42mm, and I agree with TGV that the large crown makes setting the watch extremely easy. I was fortunate enough to get it new for under $400, but even at full retail I would recommend it for anyone looking for a great field watch.

@@varanid9 Same..I think that it is in the minds of people. It is good to have a sapphire crystal of course, but not having one wouldn't stop me from buying a watch if I liked everything else. I feel the same way about people replacing perfectly good mineral crystals out the box - I mean, if it ain't broke...one could simply wait for it to scratch (if it ever did!) to replace it. Visually, just like you, I see no difference and I own both types. I think that would depend more on the type of anti reflective coating, not on the type of crystal. Well, about the watches compared on this video...they are simply not comparable quality and price wise, of course. They are similar in the fact that they are both field watches and have some similarities in terms of design - that's it. I like them both nonetheless. The Seiko is great at half the price of the Hamilton. If one could spend more, I'd avise to get the Hamilton (but I know that 200bucks is a lot of money for a lot of people), so there's a market for the two - no doubt.

@@tiagodvt I've never owned a Hamilton, but I've had a few other Swiss watches in the $2,000-ish range and, honestly, I find Seikos compare well against them. Sure, Seikos exhibit less attention to detail, but, a lot of the differences seem more a product of an almost alien mind set than true qualitative differences. My Marinemaster has better fit and finish than my Omega Seamaster Coax has or either of my Rolexes had. Yet, it doesn't even come regulated from the factory. Different priorities reflecting a different culture. I almost consider my Seiko collection as a separate thing from my watch collection.

@@varanid9 Seiko is great, I have several of them as well. I was just refering to the watches shown on the video - an entry level Seiko 5, which can't be compared to the Hamilton price or quality wise (finishing, crystal, bracelet, etc). But I'd consider it a great watch and one with a market for it - like I said not everyone can spend 500bucks on a watch. And the Seiko has other colorways, which also help. I have the Hamilton in my collection on the beautiful bracelet and it keeps excellent time. When worn daily on my wrist it is generally +1 sec/day or better. I bought the 38mm over the 42mm because like you said it is reminiscent of the Rolex Explorer which is a stretch goal for me. Great job again TGV.

My Seiko shines when working in a metal work shop I don’t mind the wear on the mineral glass and daily metal dust giving it a premature scratch wear. At $220 it’s repairable or replaceable. While I love that Hamilton I wouldn’t want to wear it at my work at that price. It’s 2024 , two years after you made this video and my Seiko is doing great while it looks like it was at war. Keep up the great work and cheers! 🙌👊🎯

How is this a fair comparison though? According to the prices when introducing the watches in the video the Hamilton is over twice the price of the Seiko ($300 more) and closer to $600 rather than below the $500 mark as is the premise of the video.

I have wore this exact Seiko SRPG for about a year and a half solid. My two biggest gripes are the hardlex crystal and the power reserve. If this is a field watch, and for what this watch costs, there is no reason it shouldn't have a sapphire crystal. I'm pretty careful with my watches for the most part and I still picked up some scuffs on this hardlex that bug me. I ordered the 42mm version of the Hamilton on bracelet, so cannot wait for that to arrive this week!

I have the silver faced version of this hammy. Daily worn it for 2yrs & it's held up wonderfully. Pros: perfect size & weight. Crown is easy to get a hold of. The neutral color of the all silver Khaki makes it a super strap monster! Negatives: The price has gone up $200 since I bought mine new off Amazon. ( It's a great watch, but I wouldn't pay what they're asking for it now.) The original leather strap that it comes with is way too thick, small & hard. And it didn't have spring pins, so I had to ruin it cutting it off.🤨 Alligator leather straps of any color look A LOT better on it,..feel much better too. In low light, the hands are tuff to read on the silver face, & the lume isn't the best. Yeah, all being considered, I love my little silver hammy. 👍

Update: I just got an srpg29 on valentine day sale for $192. It's the bracelet blue dial version. My first impressions are that while if you are expecting a small field watch, you will be disappointed, it's still not a "big watch" ...by today's standards at least . I have 6.75 inch wrist and it's a chunky definitely, and I would prefer smaller, but All in all, wears fine on me. I did take it off the bracelet, but it was much nicer than expected. I just don't like bracelet style in general. I only got bracelet version for applied numbers and nicer dial. I previously had a snk809, I found it too small all the way around. I have handled the Hamilton before and agree it's worth $100 more. If I found it for $300, I might have gotten it instead ($200-$300 was my target budget). I am saving up for a $1k plus watch, so didn't want to put more out than selling my current sport and dress watches this is replacing would net. I intend to keep this for a year or so til that purchase, but if I was looking more long term, I think the Hamilton would be a better choice. That said, I think this is a great deal at $200. Been wearing for 48 hours now, and it's only gained 3-4 seconds.

SNK803K2 was my first ever automatic watch, i've bought in 2020 in a heart of the quarantine. I felt so overwhelmed with my apple watch, not only because i was constantly connected, but because battery started to drain out quickly and it was annoying af. I've tried a different smart watches before it, even the "analog" Withings watch, but it didn't scratch that itch for a something that is as far from computers as possible. So the watch that worked with a set of gears and springs was like a breath of a fresh air really. I've been wearing watches since i was a 9 y.o. and having something on my wrist is essential to me. I was sleeping, eating, working, and all the other things wearing that Seiko, it only been leaving my wrist in a shower and only because i've put a leather strap on it. Even tho it wasn't the watch that sparkled a passion and a desire to build a collection (it actually was another Seiko - CS Sports Chronograph 140th Anniversary edition) and even tho i'm not wearing it anymore (got used to bigger watches, not oversized, just bigger) i'm still thinking that SNK803K2 is a great all-around watch for cheap with a classic elegant look. Hamilton is mine newfound admiration. I was a full-on hardcore Casio fanboy before going with the Apple and Seiko, thinking that Swiss watchmaking is something completely out of reach for an ordinary man, rather a status accessory for a douchebags and rappers than a tool, but man, i was completely wrong. Hamilton intramatic chronograph is a grail watch to me, with a such profound history of creating the first automatic chrono, and outstanding vintage inspired looks. It's not THAT expensive, i can afford this watch without any problems, but i'm used to buy watches for occasions, so waiting for a right moment. And Khaki Field is even more value-packed watch. Classic looks, featuring in a pop-culture - interstelllar and far cry, no brainer tbh. Great videos, mate, i glad i've found your channel. Love your movie collection. I used to collect the movies with my dad, when i was a kid, VHS and DVDs) It's something about the ability to touch the art, which is otherwise fully verbal. Amazing.

Great video TGV! I have the Hammy and love it so much I bought one for my dad (who sadly is pursuing a warranty repair, thankfully through the AD from whence it came =$500+ but money well spent). My only complaint , and I’m surprised you didn’t mention it, is the lack of anti-reflective coating on the crystal. Unless I’m in bright direct sunlight, I have to battle the angles to see the time clearly. Stunning face and finishing though so it’s worth the effort!

I'm a little late in watching this video, but it came a good time for me. I had been considering Khaki Field Auto for quite some time, and I recently discovered the SRPG27. After watching the video I was convinced to go with the KFA, primarily because of the thickness of the Seiko. I was hoping to try one on my wrist, but the local dealer in my area didn't have one in stock. I stumbled on the Seiko that I had dismissed, and I tried it on for the heck of it. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it fit me... so much so that I bought it. I agree with your comments that the Seiko misses some of the marks for a true field watch, but that's not what I was looking for (I have a Timex Expedition Mechanical that fits the bill). I was looking for a GADA watch with numerals on a bracelet that didn't cost too much. At

A good review and an education TGV. I've had Seiko watches for many years now, generally they have all been functional and have done the job. My old series 5's were also great for the price, as long as you shook the movement enough to wind it and I could just about forgive some of the minor hand alignment errors as 'near enough' but all of the bracelets were left wanting. Hamilton slithered onto my radar a few years ago, I have 2 with one being the 'Murph' retro, that actually looks like an old watch and not just old style with modern gubbins giving the game away. Since then I find myself looking at more examples from Hamilton and less from Seiko. This review sums up the reasons why that you outline. The Khaki Field H70455533 is great for the price and really suites life on a leather band, modern, functional, readable and from my experience should be reliable.
