What impresses me so much is how much scrap fabric is left after making a quilt - enough to at least make a good start on another one! As expensive as quilting material is, it’s wonderful to be able to make the most of every bit.

I saw this video over a year ago, nearly 2?? Promptly went to work on a quilt for my daughter. I finished it, "quilted" it with batting and backing. It's smaller than a twin size.. but I covered her up tonight with it, and smiled at knowing this is something she still treasures... She just turned 6 on the 11th. I hope that it will grow with her, to a nice lap blanket as she gets older. Thank you for the wonderful video!

So good to see this demonstration. It feels like home. My mom taught us to sew on a power machine. She worked as a factory seamstress, sewing piece work. Things were often hooked together with little threads and at some point she'd hand it to us to clip them apart and start the next phaze of the piece, while she went to start dinner. She always warned against perfection. She always said, just give it a try. She could alter a pattern and make up her own design and finish it all in one afternoon. She also didn't stop to press things much. It was all done before it was ironed, usually. What I know now is to keep it simple and fun and that I can know the 'rules' but I can do it my way too. She could make a tailored suit too. I was in awe of her knowledge. She never got frustrated over 'mistakes.' She just made lemonade out of lemons and it worked. I find a lot of quilting tedious so I need to be reminded that it can be simple and that there are efficient ways to put things together like you showed. I like that you weren't even sure how it might come out. Thanks for the video.

small footprint That's awesome you have those memories with your Mom....it made me smile...cuz you see, I'm a beginner, I mean trying to start my very first quilt kinda beginner!! LOL!! I used the word "trying" cuz I believe I've fallen into the "trying to be perfect" category, and it has quickly become no-fun and nerve racking!! So I'm thrilled I looked and looked for beginner videos that lead me to this one....and then to hear your story, I almost cried and took a big breath and giggled about how precious that memory is for you. My grandmother was a seamstress and sewed all of mine, and the rest of the dance school's costumes!! Yep! All of em!! I absolutely loved being measured for our recitals! I always watched with such admiration and I'd organize her whole sewing room too! It was OUR time together. She's gone now, and I know she'd be proud of me "just trying" and to enjoy it. SO! Long way around to finally get here, which is to HAVE SOME FUN!! Loved the video! And thanks for your story. 💕🙋😂

OH I have similar memories with my mom, she also could sew and did a lot of dresses for me and my sisters :) I AM thankful for your ever so important loving lesson from your mom about it not having to be perfect - that urge for perfection, have stalled so many of my projects, to a total halt! - recently I have been reminded of what you also mentions above - JUST HAVE FUN! with what you are creating - The feeling of JOY inside when you are creating is so much more important than perfection :) Thank you for your heartwarming story - Good memories :)

How long is the first strip?
@l.browning128
@l.browning128 4 жыл бұрын
If the poster above you is correct and the first very long strip is 30 pieces long ( I think Jellyroll strips are 40"), it looks like she ended up with about a twin size quilt top. If you wanted a queen size, you would need probably 45 strips. But I'm totally guessing.
@jayamilapersson4030
@jayamilapersson4030 3 жыл бұрын
@@l.browning128 she said that her strips was leftover strips there is no proof that all strips are the same length as jellystrips but she told us it was about 30 strips so that is what I based it on. and if you make your own strips from scraps, there is no guarantee on the size you get in the end.

soooooooo I made one and am on my 2nd. My only input is, while the actual sewing of the top took an hour (i have 9 kids and am 7 months pregnant with 10th) the preparing took hours. I don't have the funds to buy jelly rolls, so i made my own strips. That took a lot of time. BUT WORTH IT. i plan on making more! Thanks so much

Shane Winters Busy mom of seven and grandmother of two here. I feel your time crunch. This is an awesome way to finish a fast quilt. If you want to make it faster, consider making your own jelly roll out of the strips and making a quilt as you go quilt one row at a time from the top. It's SO much faster!

Once you get used to cutting strips you'll be stacking yardage and cutting them 2, 4, 6 at a time. The trick is in prepping the yardage by pressing out big wrinkles and folding it with the selvages together with a straight grain. Once you get that sorted out you'll be cutting really quickly. Jordan Fabrics channel has a good tutorial on cutting (lots of other channels too) and they have a great trick for long rulers. Use a 5# hand weight on the far end of the ruler to hold it down for you. No slippage.

Absolutely loved this! I got a bag of color coordinated scraps I had cut to 4 X4 out of some old sewing stuff I had stored because my kids,mostly my daughter kept moving in and my sewing & craft room in my small 2bdrm. Apt. Never came to fruition! Shelves were put up and stuff got put on them and it quickly became a storage shed in addition to having to rent one for over a hundred bucks a month!I quickly lost my bedroom & king size pillowtop mattress bed and she and her boyfriend have been out for two years and I am still on the couch and boxes are sleeping on my bed!LOL! I even have a fold out loveseat I inherited but no longer have room to open it and when she moved out she took my rollaway bed with her AND The new pack & play I bought for my new &only grandchild!So..where can I sew?I set up a card table which I quickly covered with part of my button collection and have been putting together various projects I would like to do in the future then bagged and boxed them ,but have had them sorted and out for over a month. Now. ( not so sorted anymore because my 20 mo.old gr.son has 3 fav. places he runs to when he first gets here, my button collection to run his fingers through them and try to eat his favorites, then to my couch bed to rub his face on my very soft and fuzzy snowflake blanket, then to his one nic nac free shelf to play with a small vintage truck I bought him, and my 2 vintage VW Bugs that match my first car!) I use to own an alterations business for about 7 years until my seperation, then divorce 3 years later and have tons of supplies and collections. I would love to open a school for poor people trying to get off welfare.Anyway, I think finding your video was some sort of sign, because a few days ago I got those bagged scraps out, shoved the buttons aside to one half,a chair and half of another loveseat and started playing with the scraps from before my divorce in about 1995 when my son was only 4 years old, and he will be 26 in December 3 days after Christmas!
