Very helpful video thankyou. My current jail is currently just a bunch of cubbies full of cages.. but now I will probably give it a renovation and put a little more thought into dealing with crimes as I am having issues with unhappiness and tantrums.

And those who are the way I said, usually go haywire after reading such a comment and I love to troll them a bit ^.^

I read that "Fell mood" can be considered as a crime from the wiki. Well, after the whole mood is over. Basically, it's murdering another dwarf for thier skin and bone to craft whatever they need to quench thier intrusive thought. Better keep those lads happy.

I thought it's specifically no crime? I never had one yet and a running Justice, so I'll dig into that when I get an opportunity.

A lot of intelligent undead from a nearby necro tower keep coming to my fort and try to corrupt my dwarves. The issue is that since they move so quickly, it is difficult to catch up to them and drag them to prison...

Just a side note: When the jailer releases imprisioned dwarf, he will need iron cage even if the prisioner is chained. And oh boy I had headache with that. It turned out you NEED lever and link to said cage (lever + one or two mechanisms). And I had weird occurence - it was resident dwarf, twice he got brawl with the sheriff and then vanished. Then he was released and just run away, never to be seen again. Reportedly it should happen, but it DID happen. This game has really it´s own head xD

I treat my jail like a spa. Sexiest place in my whole fort, barons be damned. You got religious ecstasy, you got a damn fine bed, shiny platinum chains, booze, even a nice table and chair to while away your time looking at your shiny, shiny bars from. All a dwarf needs. Hate it when they get beatings instead of a trip to the spa. MUCH less productive than a vacation.

It's actually the smartest thing to do from a gameplay point of view. And a spa visit is much more fun than an accidental drive thru of your skull through the brain when a beating goes to far again.

In my last fortress I chose a frail dwarf as captain of the guards, didn't give him any weapons or even armor, no training either. Didn't create a squad for him, didn't make a hammerer, had 25 empty cells for 220 population. In the 25 years my fortress existed 3 of my dwarfs died and one was maimed so bad he lost the ability to stand and the use of hi right hand (broken spine and mangled hand). Of the 3 dead one was of old age, guess what happened to the 2 other dead and the maimed ? Yep you got it in one, beatings for brawling at the tavern. Oh and guess how many times beatings were given at all ? Yep 3 total. All that to say that beatings are in fact death sentences or close to even with the weakest of dwarfs giving them. I also noticed something strange, don't know if it's a bug or intended. The guard would beat the dwarf until he was unconscious and brought to the hospital, gravely wounded already usually. Then once the dwarf was in his hospital bed he would come back and beat him up again.

Uhhhh having the captain of the guard being a brawler can be damn dangerous, srsly. A Legendary Hammerdwarf with an Adamantine Hammer is less dangerous then a Competent Wrestler/Biter/Kicker ^^

I always thought wooden Training Weapons would be the best. Or does the Hammerer switch to fists if you don't give him a hammer? Meant to try that out, but didn't find the time yet :D

@@Oroberus as I said, he was frail had 0 training, no squad , no barracks, 0 skill in anything related to combat.

@@Ic0nGaming Try a wooden, light wooden, crossbow. That acts as a hammer in melee.

Is there a disadvantage of not bothering with the entire justice system? It seems kind counter productive to jail your workers when it could be someone important, e.g. your legendary cook, armorsmith, etc.

It makes your Mayors and Nobles unhappy if there are unpunished crimes against them. Generally every dwarf grows unhappy if there are unpunished crimes towards them. The Justice system relieves them from these bad thoughts. So generally it really depends on how much problems you got with crime in general. And without Justice System you won't be able to interrogate spies and the like and might be more prone to artifact thefts and alike.

If you are asking if it trains mining, no. It won't be effected by mining either, cause mining only interacts with picks of any kind. Hammers interact with the macedwarf skill.

When you have a 3x3 room for your prison cell you should erase 1 tile from the prison cell area and make the tile part of a temple area instead. That way your dwarfs can pray or meditate while imprisoned. I have yet to test if this "works" with a tavern or library, too. The tavern would be interesting since it might make the booze stockpile obsolete. It would also be interesting to see if your dwarfs can still operate a screw pump while chained.

What I wanna know is why even bother setting up a justice system when most of the crimes are "didn't cater to a noble's whims?"

Because your Mayors/Nobles will grow more and more pissed if the crimes against them see no Justice. Also victims from Tantrums get good feelings when the guilty person gets punished. All in all they are just more pissed about crime if you skip Justice. And basically yes, you can skip Justice. But then you might have happiness issues in the long run as far as I've understood things.

vampires will be able to sip moron dwarfs that try to sleep in the dungeon with those kind of cells, so make sure you have enough normal bedrooms.
